OXFORD - A University of Mississippi student was hospitalized Wednesday in
critical condition after being shot in the back of the head while he was
fishing with friends.
Devan Lowery of Laurel remained in the intensive care unit, said a
spokeswoman at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Lowery was fishing with his friend, Tom Brown, who had transferred to Ole
Miss from Colorado State two years ago, and an unidentified female at
Puskus Lake in Holly Springs National Forest.
A man drove up and asked ''Are the fish biting?'' before shooting Lowery
in the back of the head with a rifle and driving away, said Thomas Brown,
the father of Tom Brown.
The two friends were not injured.
Lafayette County Sheriff Buddy East said deputies were searching for the
suspect.
Thomas Brown said he had talked to Lowery's father.
''His dad told me that the bullet went through the main part of the brain
and he's on life support now,'' Thomas Brown said.
''The university community is shocked and greatly saddened over this
apparent random act of violence directed at Devan Lowery, one of our
students,'' said Thomas Wallace, associate vice chancellor for student
life.
Lowery was enrolled in summer classes and expected to graduate in August.
