Does anybody remember the case of Margaret (Kelly) Michaels? It was a
pre-school molestation case in NJ. Whatever happened to her? Does
anyone know of a good source on the net for information about her and
similar crimes?
Thanks,
Biggrrl :-)

I saw this woman on 60 Minutes a while back. She was released from
jail on a technicality of some sort. As a matter of fact, the story
on 60 Minutes was partly an effort to understand why she was possibly
going to be retried on this case. It seemed that she was innocent but
the Prosecutor was determined to keep her behind bars. What a man,
can't admit he made a mistake.

Hi Big,
As a Pittsburgh connection, I am quite familiar with Michaels, since she
is from here. (Up until the Steeler game last night, I was rather proud to
be from here....)
ANYWAY. She was released after the original trial was declared (I
THINK...) a mistrial. I believe the prosecution decided not to retry (the
kids memories years later, the pain and anguish of going thru it again,
etc), though they said they still thought she was guilty.
She returned to the area, though I don't know what she is up to at this
time. Now that you reminded me of her, think I will check around and see
if I can find out where she is today, what she is up to.
A thought of mine on her. While all I have read seems to be of the
opinion that she was totally railroaded and spent time (years) in prison
for nothing.... I have to admit. though I feel certain some of the stuff
was exaggerated... I always thought she was guilty of child abuse...
Acknowledging that this thought/feeling was a "gut" thing.. but....there
were a ton of things said that just made me think.. she did something wrong
with those kids...
Sorry I am not able to provide facts. But that is me. I seem to relate
on a "feeling" level!" Sort of why I can't quite let go of the "Burke did
it" possibility.
PattyC (who thought the minute I saw that info about the grandma kiliing
the 4 year old.... thought.... the mother (daughter of grandma, of course)
did it....Can't tell you how many times I have been right about these
feelings .. .should I open a Riley G type web site?)

Hello,
I found this very interesting article at the Penthouse web site:
http://www.penthousemag.com/magazine/p05may/05reno.html
It covers several child abuse cases that Janet Reno, Atty General, was
involved in.
On April 30, 1993, the New Jersey Appellate Division reversed the
conviction of Margaret Kelly Michaels, a 26-year-old aspiring actress
and teacher who had been convicted five years earlier of molesting
21 preschool children by inserting silverware, toys, and swords into
their bodily orifices, and forcing them to eat feces and to have
intercourse with her--all during the school day at the busy
Maplewood preschool at which she taught. Michaels had served five
years of a 47-year sentence before the appeals court condemned
the prosecutor's use of threats and bribes to make the alleged
young "victims" testify against her.
Such tactics, the court said, were so coercive that they had
probably contaminated the children's minds with false memories of
abuse that never happened. Because of this, the children's stories
were now suspect and could not be trusted. Eventually, the
prosecutor's office dropped the charges against Michaels.

I'm glad that all the respondents understood the outrage that was committed
against this poor woman. I saw her in Bryant Park shortly after her release
and have regreted ever since that I didn't act on my desire to tell her how
much I admired her and how disgusted I was by those who put her and so many
others in prison without cause.
.
Similar crimes? I hope you mean similar cases of false accusations of child
sex abuse in a hysterical environment fed by quack "therapists" and resulting
from a combination of repressed American sexuality and a refusal to
acknowledge the TRUE location of 90% of pedophilia- THE FAMILY???
In answer to your second question, she served a number of years in prison
before being freed.
