The I-70 Killer - Herb Baumeister

Many crime devotees have heard of the "I-70 Killer." Never caught or
identified, he slew at least seven gay men along Interstate 70 in Indiana
and Ohio during the 1980s.

Some may also be familiar with Herbert Baumeister, the successful
businessman and family man who murdered at least eight gay men from
Indianapolis and dumped their bodies in the woods of his own estate. A&E's
Investigative Reports (Monday, Oct. 12, 1998) reports that police think
Baumeister was also the I-70 Killer, and indeed, it now seems likely that he
was. Also likely true was his insinuation to a potential victim that he had
killed 50-60 people. An FBI profiler said that Baumeister's cavalier
pattern of openly dumping his victims' corpses in his backyard was a sign he
had killed many times before.

This supports my theory that many of the famous unsolved serial killer cases
are in fact the work of one person, particularly those that involve
prostitutes. For anyone who is interested, I recommend the A&E show, which
among other highlights contains home-video footage of Herb Baumeister
speaking about his desire for world peace, and if he can't have that, green
M&Ms.

Tonight's A&E "Investigative Reports" was a rerun I had seen many times before
but you are right it was interesting.. There also was a special on "The History
Channel", on the advances in the technology of Forensic Science which is a big
interest of mine. It was also very interesting as was the one that featured
"The History of the Electric Chair" last night, also on the History
Channel.....
PS also I usually am not too fond of "The Leeza Show" but todays was good
featuring a segment on the black guy who killed 8+ women in Poughkeepsie.. I
believe Joe had posted on this subject a few times....

In fact, Hoosier authorities "credit" Herb with 16 murders, including
at least 10 gay men whose bodies were scattered around Indiana and
western Ohio from 1980 through 1990, all apparently lured away from
Indianapolis gay bars.

This sounds VERY unlikely to me. Reasons: Baumeister's confirmed kills
were all gay men, killed and dumped in similar circumstances, in
Indiana and Ohio, all strangled or otherwise murdered by hands-on
methods. The "I-70" series consisted of shootings in strip malls
spread across 3 or 4 states, with all but one of the victims female.
(The sole male victim had shoulder-length hair, and police believe he
was mistaken for a woman, shot from behind.) It is EXTREMELY rare for
a serial killer to adopt two such divergent MOs, and equally rare for
a sexually-motivated slayer of gay men to also kill females. It should
be simple to trace Baumeister's movements and find out if he was in
Missouri, Kansas, and/or Texas on the dates the "I-70" killer struck
in those states. A more likely explanation for this report (barring
discovering of the I-70 killer's pistols among Herb's effects): some
overworked investigator trying to close two cases for the price of
one.

In article <36234E...@worldnet.att.net>,

I suspect it actually was an overworked poster getting the "I-70" moniker
wrong. I thought I heard the "I-70" killer moniker used by A&E. It sounded
wrong to me, too. Either I or they were mistaken, or there was more than one
"I-70" killer.

Actually, the A&E program was discussing a series of killings where the
bodies of several men were left along I-70 in Ohio in the Columbus area.
They said that Baumeister often traveled this route on business at the time
the murders occured.

In other words, yes, there is more than one I-70 killer.
