Police have arrested a former University of Calgary Dinos employee after a video posted online showed him spitting on a woman and yelling a racial slur.
The incident was caught on camera by Braeden Riehl who was filming his partner Jessica Lau longboarding through a park in Inglewood.
A cyclist, who has since been identified as Justin Williams by the University of Calgary, is seen riding his bicycle from the opposite direction and spitting on Lau before yelling a racial slur.
Postmedia has been unable to contact the man identified by the University of Calgary.
Sgt. Jim Dalidowicz said the allegedly racist act took place around 8 p.m. on the pathway near the Zoo Bridge on Saturday. On Sunday afternoon, Williams was arrested and charges are pending.
Dalidowicz said it’s too soon to say whether it will be labelled a hate crime.
It could possibly be a case of aggravated assault due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lau took to Instagram on Sunday afternoon to share an update on how she’s feeling.
“The biggest thing for me right now is just to make sure he doesn’t have a chance to do this to anyone else. I didn’t take it personally. I know he’s ill inside and that he needs help,” she said. “The fact that I do know that he’s going to pay for his actions really puts my mind at rest and I hope it helps everyone else as well.”
She said she received numerous messages from people who had experienced, or know someone who has experienced, similar incidents — some allegedly by the same man. Both Lau and Riehl also wrote on their social media accounts that there was a large outpouring of support directed their way.
“It’s incredibly inspiring to see that a large percentage of people don’t condone what happened,” said Riehl on his Instagram. “It’s good to band together and make sure everyone knows that Canadians and Calgarians do not accept intolerance, abuse or bull— in any kind of way.”
Dalidowicz said the service has seen an uptick in reporting related to racially-charged incidents in recent months, following anti-racism demonstrations that have taken place in Calgary recently.
“I think people are standing up for it now more than anything,” said Dalidowicz.
The University of Calgary said Williams has not been an employee of the university since February. He was previously a manager of the school’s basketball team.
“We strongly condemn the actions in this video and join the community in extending our support to victims Jessica and her boyfriend,” they wrote, adding Williams’ past social media comments were reported to Calgary police by staff members of the local university.

I contacted Pivot Legal Society about my problems with Mike Poirier
but they weren't interested. Perhaps someone from the media could
contact me about this matter.
My beef with Mike Poirier and Vancouver Police Department:
Regarding Police File:401:06-100697 I was walking westbound on Robson
heading towards the beach around 8am when I noticed a 6 poster for
Virgin mobile. There were three of the posters in a row so it looked
like 666. The posters were red with the 6 being white. The number 666
is of course the number referred to in the Bible in the Revelations
chapter for the anti-christ. Being a believer in the LORD, a “born
again” (plus only having 4 hrs sleep, I have insomnia) I took offence
and went to the poster and wrote some things on it. “Send All Hell’s
Angels to Prison” and “Richard Branson is an ex-drug dealer”. I wrote
this in blue ballpoint pen.The posters had been plastered on top of a
DPS sign which has a red and white logo. A man came up to me and said,
“Stop writing on my sign and get off my lot”. I said, “I’m not writing
on your sign”. (Which I wasn’t since I was writing on a poster). He
pulled out his wallet and produced a business card which was a red and
white colour, he then fumbled it to the ground. He again told me to
leave, I didn’t believe him to be the owner of the lot so I refused.
He again told me to leave the lot and I again repeated that I wasn’t
going. He then got directly in front of me, between me and the sign,
He is roughly the same height as me but physically larger, he was also
wearing black platform shoes the same style as Joe Peschi does in the
gangster movies. I told him to call a cop and he said, “You don’t
call cops you settle things like a man/men (something to that effect).
I became highly suspicious. I have had problems with the Hell’s Angels
off and on for a number of years now and this type of talk sounded
very familiar to how some of their associates talk. I told him again I
didn’t think he was who he said he was and he said fine. He turned
sideways, pulled out his cellphone, and began to dial. I noticed that
the first three numbers he punched were not 911 but 68 something. The
police non-emergency number is (604) 717-3321 so I knew he wasn’t
calling them. I became fearful but decided to hold my ground. I told
him, “Your not calling the cops”. He said, ‘I’m calling the cops”,
fumbled the cell phone and dropped it to the ground. As he went to
retrieve it I continued to write on the poster with the pen. I at no
time punched him or shoved him. The VPD when they arrested me took
away my Smith and Wesson lock blade and my box cutter tool and I
obviously didn’t use these as weapons. The police report doesn’t
mention them confiscating the weapons. I would like them back. I
consider them work tools. POIRIER shoved me with his left shoulder
and used his bulk to propel me backwards. His shoving forced me
further into the lot and he commenced to try and punch me with a 1-2
flurry. He began to call me,”faggot” and "queer" and “I’ll teach you
how to be a man” and other insults which are typical when I encounter
ppl on the fringes of the HA gang. These ppl are referred to by HA as
‘friends”. I consider them to be “goofs” and so do many of the HA
bikers. All through this time I had a plastic bag in my left hand
which contained loaves of bread and newspapers. As he continued to
yell insults and made no attempt to call 911 I was asking him if he
had a mental problem. POIRIER punched me in the face with a 1-2, 1-2
combo ( a total of 4 punches) which had no effect except to cause me
to drop the bag. I went to retrieve the bag, I bent over and POIRIER
surprised with a burst of speed, kicked at me with his right foot
which hit my chest and the side of my mouth. I became angry and said,
“Since you think I’m a faggot maybe I have AIDS”. I then spit at him
and blood landed on his face. He became obviously fearful. He then ran
away as fast as he could with me following him. He went across the
street and into the offices of DPS at which time I realized he worked
there but I was angry enough not to care. I spit blood on the windows
of the business and on a vehicle with a license plate that began with
DPS in the parking lot and on the parking machine. As the blood
stopped flowing from the wound I left the scene. As I left the scene.
I passed a man with a Safeway cart binning the dumpster who said, “Way
to defend yourself”. I was walking down Haro I became aware that
POIRIER was following me he then ran towards me saying he was on the
phone to the police. I told him to go ahead. He became too close to me
so I again spit on him. I chased him down the street and then
southbound on Denman to just in front of the library. With him
threatening to kill me while running backwards. He even said, “I swear
to GOD I will kill you” just like the line from the Joe Peschi film. I
asked him if he believed in God and he said no so I asked him why he
invoked the LORD’s name. He said quit chasing me/quit spitting on me.
I apologized to a older white woman on my left hand side then walked
away turning onto Haro St. My intention was to go to St.Pauls to get
stitches to my lip. POIRIER stopped following me. I was approached by
two officers in a car who asked where I was going. I told them,
“St.Pauls”. They started asking questions, I said, “Am I under
arrest?” The officer in the passenger side who was doing all the
talking said no but not to go anywhere. Another officer appeared 2231
I believe it was. He then arrested me and charged me with assault. I
asked for a lawyer, he asked various questions none of which I recall.
I was searched. Officer 2422 showed up and the original two officers
left with the talkative one making a friendly joke about the bulk of
my wallet. 2422 seemed highly agitated more so than any law
enforcement officer I have ever dealt with. 2231 was also agitated
although not nearly as much. Both 2231 and 2422 said I appeared
agitated with 2422 saying I appeared highly agitated. I pointed out he
seemed more agitated than me. He called me a “treehugger”, said “you
ppl like to go to protest marches and save trees”. I stated I like
trees. I have never been to a protest march to save forests and in
fact recommend increasing lumber quotas. I once worked a mill job at
SPF Lumber in Port Moody. He ended up telling me to go back to
Woodstock where I came from. I was born at VGH in Vancouver in 1965.
(One of the officers threatened to kick out my teeth out if I spit on
him. I don't want this to go on any sort of complaint form or to be
divulged since I can understand the fear of a police officer in
dealing with someone who has HIV. I for the record am a blood donor
and have no diseases of any type.) Eventually another officer arrived
with a paddy wagon and I ended up being taken away. 2231 took my
utility knife and the Smith and Wesson lockblade along with the
plastic bag with the bread and newspapers. None of this appears on the
police report. Pictures of me were taken at 312 Main at their lock up
known as Hotel One. One was taken of my chest which showed the mark of
where the shoe of POIRIER had hit me. Is there any way I can get this?
It would have helped in my defence if I had had it at the trial since
Poirier denied kicking me. If I can retrieve it I will try to convince
the Crown to lay perjury charges against Mike Poirier. I at no time
threatened POIRIER. If a transcript or tape of the call to police is
possible I should be on it telling the 911 operator to respond to
Denman and Haro. Because at the time POIRIER was getting confused as
to where he was so I yelled loud enough for the 911 operator to hear.
This occurred in front of the library on Denman. I asked my lawyer to
get a copy of this but she didn't and neither did she retrieve the
photos from the lock-up. I have never “squared around” on someone in
my life. (Poirier claimed I squared around on him.) This is a boxing
terminology. I believe POIRIER to be a boxing fan who likes to use the
speed bag. I also believe him to be linked to HA. I was held at the
police lockup known as Hotel One until around 5 pm. I was threatened
with having a finger wave done on me as well although eventually
Officer DRENNAN intervened and said it wouldn't be necessary. During
most of this time I was kept in a room without a toilet. At one point
a very upset officer told me I would have to spend two days in the
lock up because I wasn't cooperating even though I was strip searched.
I had four small Caucasian men who seemed to be crack heads threaten
me with rape through the view port. This was obviously an attempt to
intimidate me since the cell is easily seen by the police on duty and
they didn't even yell at them. I asked for a lawyer 17 times before I

Mike Poirier is HA and works at DPS at 817 Denman St. This company is such a bunch of liars that besides stealing from ppl they claim to be 100% Cdn owned on their signs when in fact they are owned by a rich man in Seattle. You anti-semitic types might like to know the man is a Jew. Poirier is a liar and perjurer and he attacks ppl for no reason and then calls Vancouver Police if he loses.
