A father of three was spared the possibility of life in prison for
shooting a teenage boy, but was convicted of lesser charges in the
death of 14-year-old Demetrian Washington.
A 12-member jury took just more than 90 minutes to reach a verdict
against Darryl Flynn, 22, who took the stand at his first-degree
intentional homicide trial and claimed he shot the boy in self-defense
during a confrontation over who had thrown a potato through his
window.
Flynn told a Milwaukee jury that on May 8, 2004, he shot Demetrian in
front of his three friends after he saw the teen reach for a gun while
he was asking them about who had shattered the window.
He claimed that in the week before the shooting, his fiancee and their
five children had been subject to harassment at the hands of Demetrian
and his friends.
Flynn faces up to 65 years in prison. The sentencing date has not
been announced.
