Hello Ira,
Being here in Nashville I am knowledgeable about Ole Judge Lanier.
No, he did not surrender, he was arrested by the Mexican police on the way to
pick up his mail at the post office.
Judge Lanier was using the name, "Aubrey Thompson". He was on the way to the
post office to pick up a package which contained all sorts of empty ID cards
that he was going to officially fill in with his new name.
Officials here are saying Lanier wasn't too bright. Seems he communicated with
old buddies in Dyersburg and the FBI had surveilance in place . Additionally
ole Romeo Lanier had put a personal ad in the paper, stating he was a
financially secure, etc, etc male seeking a female 35-38. He pretended to be a
rich Texas Cattle Rancher.
Well Anyways, Lanier, who is in now in prision, called the local paper in
Memphis COLLECT complaining about the deplorable conditions of the jail,
saying he didn't belong there and would probably die in jail. Poor Baby.
Regards, gini marie

Hello BB Cadillae,
You are welcome for the upate on rapist David Lanier.
On October 14,1997, Lanier was being held in the Mero Correctional Center in
California, I am not sure if they have moved him yet.
I do know that Tennessee has the option of charging Lanier for jumping bail,
and he could face another five years to go along with his current 25 yr.
sentence.
I don't think he is in a very swell place, according to his phone call to the
editor. He complained he didn't deserve to be in such a criminal place and
that he would probably be killed by one of these hardened jail inmates.
I understand that he is writing a book claiming that he was the victim of
political enemies, vengeful women and overzealous prosecutors.
For those who aren't aware of Judge Lanier, here is a capsule summary.
Lanier, 62, was convicted in 1992 of sexually assaulting five women at his
courthouse in Dyersburg, TN. His victims had legal matters before him or
worked at the courthouse.
NO STATE charges were filed against Lanier, whose BROTHER was the local
PROSECUTOR, so the federal government charged him with civil rights
violations.
Lanier was convicted under an 1874 law generally used to prosecute police
officers, prison guards and others who have direct custody of their victims.
The 6th Circuit overturned Lanier's conviction last year, but the Supreme Court
in March ordered the appeals court to reconsider, and the 6th Circuit ordered
Lanier back to jail on Aug.22. After he failed to surrender, his appeal
before the court has since been thrown out.
Federal time is always better time. <g>
David Lanier is not worthy...

I just finished reading the book about the case... which left it at the
point where the conviction was overturned and he was out on bond. Was
the conviction then reaffirmed or what?
