Puzzled father's plea on killers
ELISSA LAWRENCE
30dec01
THE grief-stricken father of murdered Toowoomba man Kenneth Doig yesterday
made an emotional plea for information about his son's killers.

Robin Doig, 58, is still coming to terms with the bizarre events of Christmas
Eve that
claimed the life of bakery worker Ken, 31, and seriously wounded Robin's wife
Helen
and Ken's identical twin Brett.

The violent crime has left the tiny country communities of Murphys Creek and
Hampton, near Toowoomba, embroiled in a murder mystery rivalling the most
intriguing
crime novel.

For the close-knit and well-liked Doig family of Merritts Creek, near Hampton,
life has
changed forever.

"If anybody knows anything please come forward," Mr Doig said. "We don't know
the
movement of Kenny on that night. That is one thing that puzzles us, where he
went and why.

"All we knew was that he was coming from his place and was going to meet us
at church for midnight Mass."

Ken Doig, married for four years, met a violent death on the night of December
24 in James Norman Hedges Park at Helidon, east of Toowoomba. His throat
was slashed and he suffered severe injuries to his head.

Police believe he was then wrapped in plastic and put in the boot of his
early-model blue Subaru.

About 10.30 that night, Helen and Brett Doig were driving along Murphys Creek
Road with Robin Doig following in another car.

Brett and Helen Doig saw Ken's car and stopped to investigate. When they got
out of their car, they were ambushed and shot.

Mrs Doig, 58, suffered wounds to her face, throat and shoulder. Brett was shot
in the left hand and face. Both are recovering in a Brisbane hospital.

Witnessing the attack, Mr Doig did a u-turn, called police on his mobile phone
and sped towards Withcott, unsure if he was being pursued.

Police have no motive for the slaying but say they don't believe the attackers
were known to any members of the Doig family.

Mr Doig said: "Kenny was a good lad. We never had any strife with him and he
was never in trouble. "As far as I know he hasn't done anything or hurt
anybody. It's
a terrible random thing. Why? Why us?"

Mr Doig said he was grateful for the assistance his family received. "I want to
thank the people who helped my wife and son that night," he said. "They
managed to drive for help and the people they went to rang the ambulance."

Police are seeking two men, aged 20 and 22, and a 16-year-old girl. Anyone
with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or
Toowoomba Police on 4615 3000.

Now, wait! Did I read this correctly? The guy sees his wife and son shot,
and he does a u-turn and takes off?

I know he had to be scared, but he just took off?

This is an odd story.
