A former UNC Chapel Hill student from Lewisville convicted on federal
child-pornography charges had a sexual addiction that started when he
was 11 and spiraled out of control, his attorney said Wednesday.

Corey Thomas Gallisdorfer, 20, was sentenced to 15 years and eight
months in prison in U.S. District Court in Greensboro. U.S. District
Judge William Osteen Jr. also ordered Gallisdorfer to be placed on
supervised release for 25 years when he gets out of prison, according
to Lynne Klauer, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney General's Office in
the Middle District of North Carolina. He also will have to register
as a sex offender when released.

Gallisdorfer pleaded guilty in January to federal counts of production
of child pornography and online enticement. He was accused of posing
as a teenage girl online to persuade teenage boys in Georgia and North
Carolina to send him sexually explicit photographs of themselves.
Federal prosecutors say he used at least eight female aliases,
including one called "swimmerchick," to communicate online with
teenage boys.

David Freedman, Gallisdorfer's attorney, said after the hearing that
Gallisdorfer began looking at porn on his computer screen when he was
11 years old.

Gallisdorfer was a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill when FBI agents
arrested him in May 2011 after they executed a search warrant at his
room at Granville Towers, a privately owned dormitory near the UNC
campus.

In Greensboro on Wednesday, a large number of family and friends came
to support Gallisdorfer, who attended Forsyth Country Day School
before going to college. He played on the boy's basketball team and
was an accomplished student, according to Freedman.

Gallisdorfer apologized to the victims during the hearing as well as
to his family and friends. Sherry Gallisdorfer, his mother, also
apologized, Freedman said. His father, Jeffrey Gallisdorfer, was also
in the courtroom.

FBI agents in Atlanta and Raleigh began investigating Gallisdorfer
after getting a report April 4, 2011, that someone posing as a
14-year-old girl was targeting boys at several Atlanta-area schools
and persuading them to send pornographic images of themselves via the
Internet.

The person had an email account of swimmerc...@gmail.com,
according to court papers. An agent interviewed a 12-year-old boy who
said he had talked to someone on Facebook who claimed to be a teenage
girl from North Carolina who was considering attending the boy's
school the next year.

That person eventually persuaded the boy and a 12-year-old classmate
to produce sexually explicit images via a webcam and share them with
that person. The boy's father told the agent that a sexually explicit
image of his son had been found on a school laptop used by another
male student.

The person posing as "swimmerchick" told the boy that if he didn't
produce and send more pornographic images of himself, then
"swimmerchick" would send the boy's previous photos to his friends at
school, according to a complaint filed in federal court.

Another boy and a girl also sent pornographic images of themselves to
"swimmerchick," whom they had contacted through the Internet, the
complaint said.

The FBI agents were able to link the IP address for "swimmerchick" to
Gallisdorfer. The agents also found pornographic images on
Gallisdorfer's computer at his dorm.

Freedman said that Gallisdorfer has been getting treatment for sexual
addiction since his arrest. His therapist, William Amos, testified
that a sexual addiction is similar to a drug addiction and that
Gallisdorfer's prognosis is good.

He said Gallisdorfer cooperated with authorities and provided them
with passwords in an effort to get the pornographic material off the
Internet.

Freedman said Gallisdorfer is extremely remorseful for what he did.

"It's a very tragic case for all the parties involved," Freedman said.
