FAIRFIELD – A Fairfield member of the Hells Angels was sentenced Tuesday to just over three years in prison for firearm offenses, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
Michael Mahoney, 30, pleaded guilty in January to possessing a firearm with an obliterated or altered serial number and possessing an unregistered short-barreled shotgun.
On Dec. 8, 2021, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Mahoney's Fairfield home as part of an investigation into a brutal beating at the clubhouse for the Vallejo chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.
Prosecutors said that in October 2021, two different victims -- both of whom were members of a different motorcycle club that is considered a "puppet" (or subordinate) club of the Hells Angels -- were beaten by Mahoney and other club members based on perceived infractions of the Hells Angels' rules.
A total of four members of the Hells Angels were indicted on various charges stemming from the beatings.
During the search of Mahoney's home, prosecutors said that law enforcement found several firearms, including a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver with a serial number that had been scratched off, as well as a Sears & Roebuck 12-gauge shotgun with a barrel that had been sawed off to approximately 12.75 inches in length.
Mahoney had not registered his ownership of this short-barreled shotgun with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, as required by federal law.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Michael Mahoney, 30, of Fairfield, was sentenced today to three years and one month in prison for possessing a firearm with an obliterated or altered serial number and possessing an unregistered short-barreled shotgun, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.
According to court documents, on Dec. 8, 2021, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Mahoney’s home as part of an investigation into a brutal beating at the clubhouse for the Vallejo chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. In October 2021, two different victims—both of whom were members of a different motorcycle club that is considered a “puppet” (or subordinate) club of the Hells Angels—were beaten by Mahoney and other club members based on perceived infractions of the Hells Angels’ rules.
During the December 2021 search of Mahoney’s Fairfield home, law enforcement found several firearms, including a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver with a serial number that had been scratched off, as well as a Sears & Roebuck 12-gauge shotgun with a barrel that had been sawn off to approximately 12.75 inches in length. Mahoney had not registered his ownership of this short-barreled shotgun with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, as required by federal law.
This case was the product of an investigation by the Solano County District Attorney’s Office, the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, the Vacaville Police Department, the Vallejo Police Department, the Fairfield Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Aaron D. Pennekamp and Jason Hitt prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

Founded in 1948, the Hells Angels is a worldwide outlaw motorcycle club. The Vallejo chapter, at one time considered the enforcer for the Oakland chapter, was notorious for two members’ involvement in an Oct. 5, 1986, mass murder of a family of four, including two children, ages 5 and 17, in Fort Bragg. It was a crime that made national headlines on Oct. 7, one day after two members of the Sonoma County chapter traveled to Fort Bragg and, at night, burned down a house near Highway 20 with the four bodies inside.

Michelle Carroll On October 5, 1986, the Grondalski Family was murdered in Fort Bragg, California. The family consisted of William Billy Grondalski, Patricia Patty Grondalski, 17-year old Jerami Nolan Vandagriff, and 5-year old Dallas Grondalski. The entire family was executed inside their home. The murder weapons were a 45-caliber pistol and a knife.
In the case of 5-year old Dallas, her death certificate stated the cause of death was multiple stab wounds of the neck and head. The house was eventually torched in an attempt to cover up the crime. Dallas was found in the smoldering ruins of her bedroom clutching a doll. This was called the worst mass murder in Mendocino County history.
Billy Grondalski was a former Vallejo Hells Angel. He took his family to Fort Bragg to escape his past. When murdered, his club tattoo was sliced away from his left arm, probably with the same knife used to kill his little girl. One motive for the killings was that Billy left the club in bad standing and the club wanted its tattoo back because it was considered club property.
Although Hells Angels were primarily suspected, this case remained unsolved for over eight years.
