Son accused of shooting father who killed mother

Statewire
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Fifteen years after his father killed his mother, a
Green Bay man is accused of shooting his dad by drawing on hatred from the 1985
murder, police said.
Michael M. Spencer, 21, is charged with attempted first-degree intentional
homicide in the July 24 shooting of his father, Michael T. Spencer, 51, who was
hit twice in the chest and survived the gunshots.
The elder Spencer was convicted of murdering his wife, Lisa, 26, and wounding
his father-in-law, John Shore, but was not held responsible because a Brown
County jury ruled he was mentally ill. He spent three years at the Winnebago
Mental Health Institute before he was deemed safe to return to the community.
Michael M. Spencer was 6 years old at the time his mother was killed; his
sister, Mary, was 4; and his younger brother, Rafael, was 11 months old.
The younger Spencer told detectives he drew on the hatred from his mother' s
murder when he pulled the trigger of his .22-caliber derringer and shot his
father last month, according to police.
The two had argued about how to retrieve the younger Spencer' s car that had
broken down a day earlier near Saukville, investigators said. Michael M.
Spencer said he expected trouble from his father and had strapped the gun in a
black case to his belt.
The younger Spencer walked away from his father' s home after the shooting and
called 911 from the first open door he saw. He told the woman inside the house
that he had just shot his father and would later give police a confession, the
criminal complaint said.
Michael M. Spencer faces 60 years in prison if convicted. He is scheduled in
court Aug. 17 to enter a plea to the charge against him.
The younger Spencer was raised by his grandmother, Shirley Shore, who took the
three children after Lisa Spencer' s death. Grandfather John Shore recovered
from his gunshots, but died in 1993.
Michael M. Spencer moved in with his father last spring.
