In the Bay Area there were two cases in the early 1980's where children were
kidnapped and held for a period of time and found alive. One was in San
Jose where a young girl, I believe about 11 was kidnapped from a bus stop.
She actually managed to get out of the house where she was chained for
months. She was a very resourceful girl and wrote things as I recall under
the carpet on the wood floor to show that she had been there.
The other case is, I want to say the little girl's name was Tara Burke. She
was kidnapped from a shopping center. Her father was a blind piano tuner.
She was a toddler at the time and was kept for several months before she
was found in the back of a van. She had been sexually molested. Last year
there was an article in the newspaper about her graduation from high school.
Missing Lancaster girl found alive
A three-year-old Lancaster girl who has been missing since Monday afternoon has
been found alive. Ashley Taggart was found in an attic of a home on the same
street where she disappeared.
Taggart was found gagged with her feet and hands bound with duct
tap. After being treated for dehydration at Fairfield Medical Center, she was
taken to Children’s Hospital in Columbus for further treatment.
A man in the house, who reportedly has a criminal history, was arrested.
Ashley’s father, Bobby Taggart, says his daughter has marks on her arms and
legs and is still very frightened. Ashley is listed in fair condition.
A Lancaster police officer searches through trash cans. Police and
neighbors in the area have been searching day and night for the little girl.
Taggart was last seen playing in her backyard of her East Chestnut home. Her
mother, Jennifer Peters, said she left Ashley for about 10 minutes and when she
came back, she was gone.
Peters said she had gone inside to gather up some items to take to her
mom’s place, a few doors away.
Peters says Ashley often rides her bike in front of her house but never
goes past her grandmother’s house.
The neighborhood came out in force when they learned Ashley was missing.
One neighbor took a photograph of Ashley, made a poster for her on the computer
and reproduced copies to hand out.
Volunteer Ken Hollett called the disappearance a community crisis and said
a thousand people should have been out looking. Hollett says if one of his kids
were missing, he would want the same thing.
A searcher holds a picture of Taggart in his arms. Peters says she is very
grateful that her neighbors came out so quickly to aid in the search.
Lancaster police had set up a command post at an abandoned home on East
Chestnut Street and conducted a block-by-block search of the area.
The State Highway Patrol was called in and sent a helicopter, as well as an
airplane, to search for the child from the air.
The Lancaster Fire Department brought over crews to help search. Crews from
city water and street departments also joined in the search.

I believe that Katie Beers, a young girl from Long Island, was missing for
this long or longer (too tired to look it up right now...) and eventually found
in a sub-basement hidden room in a neighbor's house.
It was a surprise, and great news, that she was found alive. Ordinarily, once a
day or more has passed, I get very pessimistic about the victim turning up
alive. Did you happen to see what the neighbor had been convicted of prior?
Best,
JM

How did they eventually figure out where she was being held?

Take away the "nospam" to email.
I remember this. The guy, her uncle I believe, had built a small room way
underground. Underneath his garage that he had renovated into a rec room. The
entrance was elaborately hidden by a waist high cabinet that was recessed into
the wall. You had to unscrew it, pull it back, enter the crawlpsace and then
you had to use a pully to lift a heavy lid of some sort that covered a hole in
the floor of the crawl space. Then you had to go down a little, take off
another lid, bring it up, go down and lift another lid, bring that up, then
there was a locked door to a room in which the girl was held.
I think this is the only time I've ever read of a child being found
alive. I could not tell from the story *how* the police or whoever
found her knew to search that house--did I miss something?
Unfortunately, chances are good that this child has been raped.

I read somewhere, I cant remeber her name but an 8 year old girl was taken
from her bedroom through the window and kept captive in basement of a farm
way out in middle of nowhere. She managed to escape 5 years later when she
was 13. Her parents had moved to another state to start their lives afresh
after beliveing that she was long dead and that she would never be found.
It only goes to show that until someone is found you must never give up.

Funny you should mention Opal - yesterday on the Montel Williams Show, psychic
Sylvia Browne told Opal's grandmother that Opal was being held in Japan as a
part of a children's sexual slavery ring. She was apparently, according to
psychic Browne, brought to Japan via boat.
I remember during the yorkshire ripper enquiry that police were inundated by
pshycics given different accounts of the ripper. After it was all over the
police went through them to see if any of them corresponded at all to the
ripper. Then they came to a report written by Nella Jones. Is was so
accurate it was eerie. If they had only taken her seriously then a few
lives might have been saved from the ripper but with so many pschics reports
they could not possably have known could they. Nella Jones went on to help
police in a number of further investigation and I think one of the most
recent was the Russel Murders.
