REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) - Prosecutors in Scott Peterson's murder trial
sought Tuesday to counter defense claims that police were so eager to
charge their client with his wife's killing that they ignored other
credible tips.
Two investigators testified that in the weeks after Laci Peterson
vanished they pursued a tip that the pregnant schoolteacher was held in
a rural area about 30 miles from her hometown.
Modesto police officer Eric Beffa testified about an anonymous tip
received in early January 2003, weeks after the disappearance, that
Peterson was being held captive near the suburb of Tracy.
Beffa quoted from a report: ``They have a pregnant woman there and he
states he recognizes her to be Laci. ... He doesn't want the reward
money; he just wants her to be found.''
He and a San Joaquin County sheriff's deputy, Paul Mears, testified that
they and other law enforcement personnel responded to the area but were
unable to find any sign of the woman, despite a four-day search.
Prosecutors allege Peterson killed his wife in their Modesto home on or
around Dec. 24, 2002, then drove to San Francisco Bay and dumped her
body. The remains of Laci Peterson and the couple's fetus washed ashore
in April 2003, not far from where Peterson set out for what he claims
was a solo fishing trip that Christmas Eve morning.
Defense lawyers contend someone else abducted and killed Laci, then
framed their client after learning of his widely publicized alibi.
As the trial entered its 15th week, prosecutors prepared to introduce
evidence they say places Laci Peterson on the boat police allege Scott
Peterson used to dispose of her body.
A pair of pliers found on the boat contained a strand of hair that
prosecutors claim DNA testing indicates likely came from Laci Peterson.
It's their only piece of potential physical evidence linking Laci to the
boat police claim she never knew her husband had purchased.
Sarah Yoshida, a state criminalist, testified Tuesday that she found no
signs of blood or tissue on two pairs of Peterson's pliers seized by
police. Under cross-examination, she said the pliers were rusty and
showed no signs of recent use.
Outside court, Peterson's parents and Laci's parents appeared to have
the first verbal confrontation of the trial.
Laci's stepfather, Ron Grantski, has spoken out previously about how
ridiculous it is that Peterson went fishing on Christmas Eve, when
Grantski himself would later testify that he, too, went fishing alone
that morning.
``Where did you go fishing?'' Peterson's father, Lee, said to Grantski
on Tuesday as the families left the courtroom.
``You come down here and I'll tell you where I went fishing,'' Grantski
replied sternly, heading down the courthouse escalator.
Here's the paragraphs from the article:
Who knows, but read this...
"Laci Peterson's stepfather acknowledged Tuesday that he, too, went
fishing that morning.
"Almost exactly the time that Scott Peterson went, correct?" defense
lawyer Mark Geragos asked.
"That is correct. Ninety miles closer," Ron Grantski replied tersely
from the witness stand.
Scott Peterson's father, Lee, marveled at the revelation as he later
left the courthouse.
"I think Ron's comment early on was, 'Who goes fishing on Christmas
Eve,' and lo and behold he went fishing," Lee Peterson said."
Laci's Stepdad Suspected Scott
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., June 8, 2004
Though prosecutors in Scott Peterson's double-murder trial have said
his Christmas Eve morning fishing trip seemed unusual and was simply a
cover-up to dispose of his wife's body, Laci Peterson's stepfather
acknowledged Tuesday that he, too, went fishing that morning.
Eve,' and lo and behold he went fishing," Lee Peterson said.
Scott Peterson, whose trial is in its second week of testimony, claims
he went fishing at the Berkeley Marina the morning of Dec. 24, 2002,
then came home to find his wife missing. His lawyers say someone
abducted her while she walked in a nearby park and then framed
Peterson after learning his alibi.
Prosecutors contend Peterson killed his wife in their Modesto home,
then drove her body to San Francisco Bay and dumped it from his small
boat.
The remains of Laci Peterson and her fetus washed ashore in April 2003
— not far from where Scott Peterson said he was fishing.
Peterson, 31, could face the death penalty or life without parole, if
convicted.
Grantski testified that he was suspicious of Scott Peterson early on.
"I said, 'I think your Berkeley fishing trip is a fishy story. Did you
do something else? Do you have a girlfriend?"' Grantski testified. "He
said, 'No,' and he turned around and walked away."
Prosecutors claim Peterson's affair with a massage therapist was his
motive for murder, but Grantski testified Peterson and Laci appeared
to have a loving relationship.
Grantski took the stand a day after Laci Peterson's mother, Sharon
Rocha, who also spoke of a seemingly loving relationship.
Both also indicated Scott Peterson was nearly emotionless throughout
the search for Laci and shunned friends and family members trying to
help, even avoiding the media as others tried to convince him he
needed to get the word out.
Prosecutors have tried to portray this attitude as indifference and
the actions of a guilty man, although Grantski acknowledged that Scott
Peterson was not an emotional person.
Laci Peterson's brother, Brent Rocha, described how Peterson stayed
away from the media as the search went on. Rocha said Peterson did not
participate in a public vigil for his missing wife, staying off the
stage as his own parents and Laci's family pleaded for the public's
help.
Grantski had acknowledged earlier that Scott told him, "This isn't
about me, this is about Laci," in explaining why he shied from the
cameras.
Rocha said he told police he suspected Laci Peterson's ex-boyfriend
might have been involved in her disappearance, adding he had heard the
two had an abusive relationship.
Rocha's wife, Rose Marie, later testified that when police began
looking at Scott Peterson, she remembered a strange comment he made
months earlier after Laci became pregnant.
"I was kind of hoping for infertility," she testified Scott told her,
adding that she didn't take it as a joke.
Prosecutors have said Peterson was not ready to be a father and was
looking for a way out.
However, Rocha's wife acknowledged that she told detectives in January
2003 that Scott and Laci seemed happy together.
Court TV reported that the Petersons have been goading the Rocha Family on
numerous occasions.

Because he's a little shit like his son.
Generational arrogance! Sure shows how far the apple did not fall from the
tree...

I used to think, between Scott's parents, Mumsie was the diabolical
one. I still think she created a son who is lazy, indulged,
pretentious, lies and cheats, and has a ballooned ego. I had figured
that Lee was, at best, ineffectual: grunting noncommitally from behind
his newspaper as Darth controlled and bank-rolled Scotty's facade.
After hearing the tapes where Dad, just days after Laci's vanishing,
is describing his supposedly-loved and -missed daughter-in-law as just
so much rotting meat on the side of the road somewhere, I'm convinced.
He's evil. How can anyone with a conscience be so cold and dismissive?
Even if you were filled with righteous anger because you thought your
child was being prosecuted for a murder he didn't commit, who lashes
out and tries to "mix it up" in the courthouse with the grieving
family of the victim? Damn, cracker, show some class.

I think Laci's family didn't show up the entire following day (after
the words exchanged) in court because they couldn't stand to be near
the Peterson man... men.

Exactly, and late one night on the Abrams Report I heard a tape of Scott and his
mother giggling ( I swear) over the incident where the bay cops had discovered
an anchor but no body. Scott and his mother were delighted but not in the
right way. And why would Lee Peterson dare say anything to a relative of
Laci's except how sorry he was about her loss. These are spooky people.
Mad, you are. Mad.
