Hello N.W.,

Yes, I sure can. Below you will find three articles updating this case.
Unfortunately, the latest article is from 12/4/97, more than a month ago.
Thanks for your post though, it caused me to go and find these updates, and I
certainly did enjoy reading this additional info on Dean Metcalfe and what he
has been up to in recent months. It's quite exciting to forget about a case,
then have your memory jogged by a post like yours, and then find a whole bunch
of interesting updates.

> Has a
>body been found.

Nope, the body of 11 year old Andre has not been found.

> Has Dean Metlcafe talked anymore yet about where he
>buried her.

Not really. Although he did agree to hand over his financial assets to the
parents of Andre. Why he did that, I'll never understand. Stupid move. He
should have fought tooth and nail to hang on to ALL of his legally earned
assets, rather than just handing them over to the parents.

Quite a bit of info. See below. :)

Confessed killer waives assets

A man who says he abducted and killed 11-year-old Andre Bosse in June won't
fight a civil lawsuit and will give his assets to the girl's parents.

Linda and Matt Bosse, who live just north of Muskegon, sued Dean Metcalfe for
$10 million. His assets, probably worth less than $50,000, were turned over
Tuesday.

Linda Bosse said she wants Metcalfe to have empty pockets if he's ever released
from prison. "I don't think he needs to have any light at the end of his
tunnel," she said.

Metcalfe, who is serving a life sentence for sexual assaults, says he can't
recall where he left Andre's body. He has not been charged in her
disappearance, mostly because the body has never been found.

The Bosses had hoped hunters might discover Andre's remains.

Metcalfe pays for killing Andre

Dean Metcalfe's assets don't come close to the $10 million judgment.

CHRONICLE STAFF WRITER
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A convicted pedophile who admitted killing an 11-year-old neighbor girl in June
turned over all his possessions Tuesday to the child's parents and accepted a
$10 million judgment against him.

Dean Catlin Metcalfe, 45, opted not to fight a wrongful death civil lawsuit
brought by Matthew and Linda Bosse, parents of Andre Bosse, in Muskegon's 14th
Circuit Court.

During negotiations with the Bosses' attorney, Metcalfe reportedly expressed
regret for killing Andre and inflicting pain on his own daughter, the missing
girl's best friend. He said he wished he could lead authorities to the girl but
can't do more than providing the information that has already failed to produce
a body.

In court, Metcalfe turned over his Consumers Energy pension, land contract to
his Lakewood Club mobile home, its contents and title to a late-model pickup
truck. No dollar value for those possessions has been determined, officials
said.

Whatever cash the Bosses will receive is not the point of the lawsuit, Linda
Bosse said. Metcalfe's assets don't come close to the $10 million judgment.
More than likely, they are under $50,000, officials said.

Still, their intent, she said, was to make certain Metcalfe had nothing to look
forward to if he's ever released from prison.

"I don't think he needs to have any light at the end of his tunnel," Linda
Bosse said. "We blew some light bulbs out for him."

She said Metcalfe's possessions and assets mean nothing to them, but taking
them provided a way to exact justice.

"It's not the material things that are important to us," she said. "Trying to
make him pay for what he's done, to bring justice to him, that's (our intent)."

Metcalfe earlier this year was sentenced to serve two concurrent
life-imprisonment terms after he pleaded no contest to sexually molesting two
other young girls. Despite Metcalfe's admissions, prosecutors have yet to
charge him in Bosse's death.

According to Metcalfe, he abducted Bosse from her Lakewood Club home June 17,
raped her repeatedly over a two-day period then killed her in remote Lapeer
County when she tried to flee.

Despite massive searches in Lapeer County and in areas of Muskegon and Oceana
counties where Metcalfe was thought to have first taken the girl, no trace of
the child has been found.

Metcalfe represented himself in the civil lawsuit and, acting as his own
attorney, negotiated the judgment with Matthew Halbower, the Bosses' lawyer.

In their conversation, Halbower said, Metcalfe voiced regret for his actions.

"It was in the context of talking about his own daughter," Halbower said
outside court. "And how (his daughter) was the victim of his actions. He voiced
regret and acknowledged all the pain and suffering should fall on him, not his
daughter."

Metcalfe's daughter and her mother, who had been divorced from Metcalfe, have
since changed their names to "disassociate" themselves from him, court records
show.

Linda Bosse said she and her husband care about the well-being of Metcalfe's
daughter. "Our heart really goes out to her," she said. "She's caught in the
middle."

Halbower said Metcalfe also claimed he did not know where Andre Bosse's body
was, but stressed the child was dead.

"He told me over and over again that if he knew where she was he would have led
the authorities there," Halbower said. "I specifically asked him if there was
any information whatsoever to suggest that Andre would still be alive. He said
absolutely not. ... He admitted to me that he shot her.

"But this is a man who has no credibility."

Linda Bosse called Metcalfe "a coward," for victimizing children and for his
fear of scrutiny from jurors and reporters.

"He didn't want the trial, the jury, the news media," she said. "That's just a
coward's way out. He didn't want to face anybody."

Still, the Bosses now wait for word about their daughter and remain optimistic.

Failure of hunters during the firearm deer season to come across their
daughter's remains doesn't bother them, Bosse said.

"No news is good news," she said. "It doesn't mean she's not out there, but
she's not where he said she was. We're trying to stay on the positive side
until we have evidence otherwise."

Andre's birthday day of frustration for searchers

Wednesday, November 12, 1997

By Tom Gromak
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt and Linda Bosse put 12 candles on a cake Tuesday to mark what would have
been their daughter's birthday.

Three hours away in rural Lapeer County, about 40 searchers - police and FBI
agents, firefighters and volunteers - spent six hours in a fruitless search for
the remains of Andre Bosse.

When they gave up around 3 p.m., frustrated state police Capt. Tim Rod conceded
Andre might not even be in Lapeer County.

He said the girl's confessed killer, Dean C. Metcalfe, 44, of Muskegon has
"misled and deceived" detectives with changing stories and murky details of
what he did with the girl between her July 17 abduction in Twin Lake, north of
Muskegon, and her alleged July 19 murder in Metamora Township.

"He's been very deceptive. As a result, we're not sure what piece of his story
may be accurate or if he's leading us astray purposefully," Rod said.

Tuesday's search focused on an 80-acre site along Clark Road, north of Newark
Road, in Lapeer Township. Police were led there after a prospective land buyer
stumbled on a mattress while looking at vacant land on Friday. The man recalled
the Bosse story and phoned police.

Rod said the mattress matches the description of one Metcalfe claimed he dumped
shortly after killing the girl. It is not known if the mattress contained blood
or other evidence tying it to Metcalfe or Andre. Further testing is under way
at the state police crime lab in Bridgeport.

Rod said initial searches of the Clark Road site on Monday, and the intensive
search on Tuesday, turned up little more evidence: some food wrappers matching
ones Metcalfe said he discarded, and other undisclosed items described as
"unusual" but not positively connected to the case. The items included a
T-shirt Linda Bosse said was not her daughter's.

Searchers probed thick weeds with sticks, scoured the woods and walked in a
30-person elbow-to-elbow line, combing the open fields without success.

"It was not a false alarm by any means," Rod said. "We do positively have new
evidence. We can positively put him in the area. But we have not found a body."

"I feel every search is a successful one because we've got another answer. We
know another place that she's not," Linda Bosse said. "I hope the people don't
feel too discouraged."

Linda said her family remains "prepared for whatever we find" and not
completely convinced Andre is dead. They spent Tuesday night - what would have
been the 12th birthday of their only child - celebrating her life with family
and friends. The centerpiece: a big cake imprinted with the phrase "We love
you, Andre."

"We're doing the same thing we do every year. It's been a typical day, except
for Andre not being here," Linda said. "We still love her. We still feel she's
here."

Some of the volunteer searchers said they hoped to find closure for the family.

"It's disappointing when you don't find anything," said Rachel Swailes, a
Lapeer firefighter.

Robin Gepfrey of Lapeer said searchers and authorities were upbeat - largely
due to the new evidence - when the effort began around 9 a.m.

Rod said no other searches of the area were planned. He said police would wait
for further tips before deciding their next move. The weekend start of rifle
deer season will send thousands of hunters into the woods across the state,
something Rod hopes will lead to the discovery of the girl's whereabouts.

Linda Bosse said searchers from Great Lakes Canine Rescue, a private volunteer
search organization, would likely visit the site now that state police have
left.

Metcalfe, who has not been charged in Andre's disappearance, is serving a life
sentence in prison on unrelated sex charges.

According to Metcalfe's story, Andre's body was wrapped in a jacket and hidden
in some brush in a wooded area near an open field.

Metcalfe described a number of landmarks in the area where he dumped the body -
a cemetery, a gray house with dormer windows and the foundation of a long-gone
homestead.

A stone foundation was located on the Clark Road site where the mattress was
found. A two-track path led through light woods to an open field, bordered by a
line of trees on the north and a wooded area to the north.

But, Rod said, there are dozens of areas in Lapeer County and elsewhere that
could fit the description. He pinned more hope on discovering the girl's
clothes. Andre was about 5-feet, 2-inches tall, 120 pounds, with dark brown
hair. She was last seen wearing a white Jamaican T-shirt, Brittania blue jeans,
white socks, black high-topped Nike athletic shoes and carrying a green
tri-fold nylon wallet containing $60.

Anyone with information is asked to call the state police post at Grand Haven,
(888) 324-4969, or an anonymous tip line at (800) 717-0111, access code 99.

Her body has not been found. As for the slime that murdered her, all he
seems to talk about is the prison conditions. One thing though, the Bosse's
won a court case to take all Metcalf's money, home, truck, and retirement.
It's not even a dent in what he took from them, but it amounts to several
hundred thousands of dollars.

Do you know if he took a lie detector test? Is it possible that he's a "false"
confessor? I've hadn't heard of this case. Really interesting. Thanks for
the posts.

Hello jb,

Most likely because he knows that no matter what he does, his society will
not treat him in a fair manner. Knowledge is power. As long as he has the
knowledge of where Andre's body is, he is dealing with police from a position
of power. If the body is ever found, he loses all of his power, and naturally
the consequences to him will be negative. As long as he seems to want to be
helpful, but still REFRAINS from giving away the info of where the body is, he
is enjoying the best of both worlds, under the circumstances that he is in.

>Do you know if he took a lie detector test?

No, I don't.

> Is it possible that he's a
>"false"
>confessor?

Well, I think there is solid evidence linking Dean to the abduction and
murder. But I don't know if the evidence is truly overwhelming.

> I've hadn't heard of this case.

I'm quite sure that I posted one or two brief items on this case, in the
past. But nothing too extensive. It was one of those cases that made the news
wires for a few days, especially while the search for Andre was going on. But
later on, it faded away and only remained a major story in the local area where
Andre lived.

>the posts.

You're welcome. I'm always glad to look up an old case, and post updates on
it. But I definately need the name of the victim or perpetrator, preferably
both, spelled correctly, in order to find these old news articles, like I did
in this case.

Take care, JOE
