Cocaine Found in Barney Doll

.c The Associated Press
AP-NY-05-13-98

WALTHAM, Minn. (AP) - Barney tells millions of adoring preschoolers to use
their imagination. But the 6-foot purple dinosaur surely never imagined that
somebody would stuff him with $100,000 worth of cocaine.

A drug-sniffing dog detected two pounds of the drug hidden inside a talking
Barney doll at a post office in Texas. Authorities allowed the package to be
shipped to Minnesota, where three men were arrested, the state Bureau of
Criminal Apprehension said Tuesday.

Sean Donaghue, 25, and brothers Adan and Eden Canales, 31, were charged in
federal court with conspiracy to possess and intent to distribute cocaine.

Authorities said Donaghue was to be paid by the Canales brothers to pick up the
pack prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II. Veterans groups have been
seeking an apology and compensation for their harsh treatment.

Philip ``is well aware of the painful memories which the war caused to people,
both from his own wartime experiences and from meeting veterans and
ex-prisoners of war over the years since,'' the palace said.

``For very many years, Prince Philip has worked for reconciliation and for a
greater understanding between the two countries.''

Prime Minister Tony Blair's office earlier had said the award was appropriate,
and not that three previous emperors had received the same honor. The award was
stripped from Akihito's father, Emperor Hirohito, during the war but was
restored in 1971.

``The Emperor of Japan is making a state visit. We want it to be a success, the
Japanese want it to be a success, and we will do everything we can to make it a
success,'' said Blair's spokesman, Alistair Campbell.

(Bizarre continuation snipped)

This is pretty funny. In the trial I was a juror for (conspiracy to
distribute MJ, mentioned elsewhere here) a guy was caught because he had a
big box of MJ Fed-Exed to him, I think all the way from Arizona. I got the
biggest kick out of the recounting of that part of the story -- he was SOOO
embarrassed, and the prosecutor, you could tell, was really enjoying
dragging out the story, detail by detail, from him. I suspect the
prosecutor in this case will have a hard time keeping a straight face,
esp.when the Barney doll is entered into evidence.

=) The cause of this was some sort of AP to AOL mixup in transfer.

>help me out here?

No problem. I went to AP's site to pick up the last part of the story.

Here it is:

Authorities said Donaghue was to be paid by the Canales brothers to pick up the

package at the post office in Waltham, population 170.
