Very interesting story out of St. Louis, Missouri today. A fellow named
Darnell McGee was shot to death way back on January 15, not much of a
story so far... But a subsequent police investigation revealed that
Darnell was HIV-positive, and that he had sex with at least 61 girls and
women, ranging in age from 12 to 22. Authorities think there are MANY more
girls and women that Darnell had sex with. Out of the 61, at least 12 have
already tested positive for HIV. Some are pregnant, and at least one has
delivered a baby infected with HIV.
Darnell definately was aware that he had the HIV virus, he was tested in
1992, and received a positive result. His behavior in the past few years,
seeking out so many young women and deliberately having unprotected sex
with the, could merely be the raging sexual libido of a so-called "normal"
man.
But I like to consider a different possibility. The possibility that
Darnell very specifically set out to have sex with as many young girls and
women as he possibly could, because he wanted to infect them with the
virus and kill them. I know that if I was told I had a fatal disease, I
would feel outraged that my life would be cut short unjustly. I would feel
powerful urges to take some people with me, down the ride into nothingness
for all of eternity.
Perhaps Darnell felt the same way. Perhaps he even hated sex, but he saw
that this was a golden opportunity to destroy other people's lives, just
like his own life had been destroyed. So he set out to infect as many
people as possible, just like more traditional mass murderers like James
Huberty and Martin Bryant and Charles Whitman set out to kill as many
people as possible. It's true that the HIV virus is a slow mover, it's
certainly not like shooting someone to death. But I can easily envision
Darnell having the clear mindset of wanting to kill as many people as he
could, and deciding to use his HIV status as a weapon, and infect as many
folks as possible.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Dozens of women and girls charmed by flattery and the
promise of gifts had sex with an HIV-infected man before he was shot to
death earlier this year, according to a published report today.
In two years, at least 61 girls and women have been located who had sex
with Darnell McGee, and authorities fear there may be many more, the St.
Louis Post-Dispatch said.
So far, 12 of them have tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes
AIDS, health officials said. Some are pregnant. At least one has delivered
a baby infected with HIV.
``It's frantic,'' said Beth Meyerson of the Missouri Department of Health.
``We need to find these people. This is a very serious health threat.''
McGee, 28, of East St. Louis, Ill., was shot to death Jan. 15. He was
driving in a residential area with a young woman when a pedestrian flagged
him down. The man walked up to the driver's window and shot McGee at
point-blank range with a .45-caliber pistol, then went through his
pockets. Police said they did not know if the killing was a robbery or
revenge.
After the killing, some of McGee's sex partners went to the doctor for
treatment of flu-like symptoms and tested positive for HIV. Health
officials then began trying to track down others.
In Missouri and Illinois, it is a felony to knowingly spread HIV.
Nationwide, few documented cases exist where one person has knowingly
infected a half-dozen or more people.
Confidentiality prevented health workers from commenting in detail on the
McGee case, except to say that McGee knew he had the virus when he had sex
with females ranging in age from 12 to 22. They were white and black,
middle-class and poor, from all parts of the region.
Some girls told health officials that McGee cruised in front of junior
high schools and skating rinks. He flattered them and promised gifts.
``He didn't care about spreading the virus,'' Meyerson said.
McGee tested positive for the AIDS virus in 1992, and health officials
haven't had much time to begin looking for McGee's partners before 1995.
``That's a challenge we'll have to face,'' Meyerson said.
Some health officials say cases of people knowingly spreading the virus
are common.
``There are many more McGees out there,'' said Diane Grandberry, an
education counselor for Northside AIDS Outreach, a nonprofit group. ``Some
people say, `Why should I die with this disease by myself? I've been given
a bum deal.

Here is a bit more information on our prolific HIV spreader in Missouri.
One of the gals who feel victim to his charm at age 15 tells us her story.
It just amazes me, the stupidity of human beings. The mindless desire that
people have to copulate and fornicate with each other. Unbelievable. I
could go out, tell a gal that she's pretty, buy her a couple of presents,
and she would be willing to let me copulate with her, knowing full well
that such copulation might give her a fatal illness, ending her entire
life! It's an amazing world you people live in. I'm so glad to have had
the wisdom to excommunicate myself from your pathetic society.

This update is from the online edition of today's St. Louis
Post-Dispatch newspaper:
`He Told Me I Was Pretty'
"Lucy" recalled Thursday how McGee had lingered in front of a liquor
store near East St. Louis Junior High School. He smiled and waved at all
the girls.
He waited for Lucy, then 15.
"How are you?" he'd ask.
He called himself Boss Man. He drove Lucy around in his cars. He
bought her tennis shoes, dresses and candy.
"He told me I was pretty," Lucy said, recalling that October afternoon
seven years ago. "I liked that."
They had sex four times. He was her second partner.
She didn't think much about using a condom. After her AIDS test, she
always insisted on using condoms.
Lucy (not her real name) tested positive for the AIDS virus in 1991. For
a year, she wondered how she had gotten it.
Lucy had slept with three men. Only one tested positive for the AIDS
virus. "It was him," she said. "Boss Man."
Lucy's now 22, still living in East St. Louis - and taking 17 pills a day.
Every other week, she goes to the Helena Hatch Special Care Center for
Women, a federally funded clinic for women with the AIDS virus, at
Washington University's School of Medicine. There, Lucy gets a
two-hour infusion to combat an infection that threatens her eyesight.
"He gave me AIDS," said Lucy, who was formally diagnosed with
full-blown AIDS in 1994.
"I got a lot of anger built up in me."
She saw McGee twice last year. Once, at a Chinese take-out restaurant
in Cahokia, she wanted to confront him. She still remembers what she
wanted to tell him:
"You gave me AIDS. You knew you had it. You flashed all this money in
front of me. You told me I was pretty. You gave me AIDS."
When she approached McGee, he asked for her phone number. Lucy
lost her courage.
"I'd have it now," she said.
But it's too late. On Jan. 15, about 4:30 p.m., McGee and a young
woman drove the 4700 block of Vernon Avenue in St. Louis.
A man waved at McGee to stop. The woman got out of the car and
walked away. The man went to the driver's window, took out a
.45-caliber pistol and shot McGee in the shoulder at point-blank range,
police said.
Police have no suspects. They're investigating if it was a revenge murder.
Last year, 536 people in Missouri and 1,702 in Illinois reported having
the AIDS virus. Hundreds more haven't reported it - or don't know they
have the virus.
About 650,000 to 900,000 people nationwide had HIV in 1996. Last
year, AIDS was the leading cause of death for people ages 25 to 44.
Some, but not all, health officials say cases of people knowingly
spreading
the virus are common.
"There are many more McGees out there," said Diane Grandberry, an
education counselor for Northside AIDS Outreach, a nonprofit group.
"Some people say, `Why should I die with this disease by myself? I've
been given a bum deal.' "
Meyerson, of the Missouri Health Department, said that less than 1
percent of the HIV population in Missouri thought this way. "The McGee
case is rare," she said, "but still dangerous."
>Perhaps this is an example of your undetectable serial killer.
>~Hoover
Hello J. Edgar,
Good point! Darnell could indeed be an example of my undetectable serial
killer, if it is true that he deliberately set out to kill as many girls
and women as possible, by infecting them with the HIV virus. Since Darnell
is dead, and apparently left no written statement to this effect, I guess
we'll never know if he was a deliberately diabolical serial killer or just
an apathetic and oversexed fellow who craved copulation and didn't give a
damn about the consequences of his actions.
Regardless, a whole lot of people WILL eventually develop AIDS and die
as a direct result of Darnell's actions, and that makes him a prolific
killer in my book, although not knowing if he deliberately WANTED and set
out to kill as many people as possible does diminish my overall interest
in and enthusiasm about this case, to a certain degree.

Was it Guy de Maupessant who wrote the short story "Clair de Lune" on
which Debussy's masterpiece was based? Y'all be a-stoppin' me if'n I'm
wrong.
This old misanthrope quotes the above exactly, except I guess it was in
French, but Joe is no less eloquent on Usenet. Except for the "ending
entire life" part. It's a short story, so there's not much further
development than this. I believe the old misanthrope is some kind of
religious ascetic. And he is disturbed by the young couple whom he sees
billing and cooing.
One night he steps out into the courtyard and the moon is so brilliant,
if I say he was moonstruck you won't start humming that old Italian song
about pizza will you? No, you must be flooded with the strains of debussy
because his masterpiece captures exactly the moment of being shocked by
beauty and dumbstruck and I wish i had the words or the music or any damn
thing. Just go read the story and listen to debussy. That's the end of
the story. All the sudden the old guy is struck dumb by the beauty of the
moonlight and that is what Debussy's Clair de Lune is about.
Someday this will happen to Joe. I have a theory that some people were
put here by a whimsical God to suffer long and long so they will be
prepared to be struck by Beauty. I'm a second rate hack but i know that
moment. And I wouldn't trade 90 years of a normal life. I hope that
Debussy is going thru your head for the rest of the day.

Hello darkstar,
I have no idea who Guy de Maupessant is/was, and I haven't read anything
called "Clair de Lune", but thanks for calling me eloquent. And I like the
term misanthrope, so feel free to consider me one to, just not an OLD
misanthrope.

When the moon hits my eye like a big pizza pie that's amore..... :)

I wish I could find beauty in life. If i ever do, i'll let ya know. But
don't hold your breath....

I hope it does happen, darkstar. I hope that god exists and he strikes
me with Beauty. I'd welcome this with open arms. But it's not going to
happen, I fear. God does not exist, and all my potential to appreciate
beauty was destroyed during the course of my childhood. C'mon god, show me
a miracle, perform a miracle in front of my eyes, reawaken my soul, and I
will worship you and sing your praises. As one of my favorite heavy metal
songs says "god bless the children of the beast".
Thanks for the interesting and thought provoking post,
Take care, JOE

Sounds like Joe's a Baby Boomer misanthrope....

I did a bit more research on that, and found out that one of the horrible
hallucinations he was suffering from when he died was that he had an evil
double who could take control of his body from time to time and make him
do things which he found horrible. This particular delusion was the basis
of a story called "The Horla" which is one of his better peices.
He also believed that his brain was turning to liquid and dripping out of
his nose, and that his own urine was of great value. He saved it up in
jars and was quite protective of it...
That's all I'm going to say about him though...cause it is way off topic.
