Kolb asked Reynolds for hug before murder

Sarah Kolb asked Adrianne Reynolds for a hug moments before she killed
her in the parking lot of a Moline Taco Bell, Rock Island County
State's Attorney Jeff Terronez said in his opening statement at Ms.
Kolb's murder trial this morning.

Mr. Terronez said the Jan. 21 hug turned deadly when Ms. Kolb, 17,
1003 W. 10th St., Milan, started yanking Adrianne's hair and said she
didn't want her around anymore.

The first three witnesses, classmates of Ms. Kolb and Ms. Reynolds at
the Black Hawk Outreach Center in East Moline, were Cassi Van Vooren,
Stephen Fonseca and Sarah Harlow.

Ms. Van Vooren said the relationship between Ms. Reynolds and Ms. Kolb
was "cordial" until a New Year's Eve party to which Ms. Kolb took Ms.
Reynolds. The witness said that Ms. Reynolds, 16, had sex with a boy
that night.

About two weeks later, Ms. Van Vooren said, she overheard an argument
during which Ms. Kolb called Ms. Reynolds a "whore."

Ms. Van Vooren also testified that between November, 2004, when Ms.
Reynolds moved here from Texas and enrolled in the Outreach Center,
and the time of her death that her appearance changed. She said Ms.
Reynolds cut her hair and started wearing black clothes, mimicking the
way Ms. Kolb dressed.

Ms. Harlow said she was at the New Year's Eve party as well. She said
Ms. Reynolds left and later came back, after which Ms. Reynolds told
Ms. Kolb that "I just met two of your friends and I "f------ them."

Ms. Harlow said Ms. Kolb later in the evening referred to Ms. Reynolds
a "slut and a whore" and said she wanted to cut ties with her.

Mr. Fonseca said he was friends with Ms. Reynolds and talked with her
nearly every day. "She wanted to be everyone's friend. She was trying
to get away from friends that went wrong down there (in Texas)."

Mr. Terronez said in his opening statement that Ms. Kolb was "annoyed"
with Ms. Reynolds. He said she invited Ms. Reynolds to lunch at the
Taco Bell on Avenue of the Cities in Moline and, as they talked in Ms.
Kolb's car, asked for a hug before the fatal attack.

He said Sean McKitrick, a classmate who was in the car with the two
girls and Cory Gregory, got out of the car and walked away when the
fight started.

Like Ms. Kolb, Mr. Gregory, 17, of 716 21st St. A, Moline, is charged
with two counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide in
the case and will be tried in February.

Assistant Public Defender David Hoffman, Ms. Kolb's attorney, said
during his opening statement that jurors should "pay attention to what
is fact, what is opinion, what is rumor, what is said and by whom."

The courtroom, mostly empty during jury selection Monday and Tuesday,
was filled to capacity this morning.

KOLB TRIAL: Prosecutor lays out evidence
By Barb Ickes

Sarah Kolb asked Adrianne Reynolds for a hug, grabbed her by the head,
said, “Leave us alone,” and strangled the 16-year-old East Moline girl
to death, Rock Island County State’s Attorney Jeff Terronez said
during his opening statement in Kolb’s murder trial this morning.

Testimony began today in the Rock Island County Circuit Court trial of
Kolb, 17, of Milan, Ill. She is charged in connection with the Jan. 21
death and dismemberment of Reynolds, a classmate at the Black Hawk
Outreach Center in East Moline. Authorities have said another
classmate, Cory Gregory, 17, of Moline, took part in the crime. He
also is charged with first-degree murder and scheduled to stand trial
in February.

Also in his opening statement, Terronez attributed most of the
dismemberment to Nathan Gaudet, 16, of Moline. Gaudet has pleaded
guilty to helping conceal Reynolds’ body several days after the
slaying occurred in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant in
Moline. Reynolds remains were found in a manhole at Black Hawk State
Historic Site, Rock Island, and on a Mercer County, Ill., farm owned
by Kolb’s grandparents, authorities have said. Gaudet is expected to
be a witness in the trial.

Terronez also told jurors this morning that the teenage suspects went
to a McDonald’s restaurant for a snack after placing some of the
victim’s remains in the trunk of Kolb’s car.

Two days of jury selection in the case ended Tuesday afternoon with 12
jurors and three alternates chosen. Circuit Judge James Teros is
presiding over the case.

During his questioning of potential jurors, Rock Island County State’s
Attorney Jeff Terronez warned each one that graphic evidence would be
presented during the trial. After court recessed Tuesday, though, the
prosecutor said he does not plan to present police photographs of the
body parts to jurors.

“I don’t expect to show graphic pictures,” he added.

Terronez also said Tuesday that he no longer intends to call Kolb’s
mother, Kathryn Klauer, as a witness, saying only, “I have my
reasons.”
