DRIVER PLEADS NO CONTEST IN STAYNER DEATH
CRASH
A tomato packinghouse worker pleaded no contest Thursday to hit-run driving
in the traffic accident that killed childhood kidnap victim Steven Stayner.
Antonio Loera, 28, could receive up to four years in state prison, but
Merced County's top prosecutor expects him to be sent to county jail for as
little as three months because he has no criminal past. A no contest plea is
equivalent to a guilty plea under California law.

STAYNERS SUE:
The family of kidnap victim Steven Stayner has filed a $5 million claim
against Merced County, alleging negligence in Stayner's fatal accident Sept.
16. The claim, filed by attorney Melvin Belli of San Francisco, alleges that
Stayner died because the county and the public works department failed
properly to maintain Santa Fe Drive, where Stayner, 24, was killed when he
ran into a stalled car with his motorcycle. The claim said the county was
negligent for not providing warning devices to caution drivers o

Prosecutors have requested the dismissal of a manslaughter charge against
the man accused in the hit-and-run death of kidnap victim Steven Stayner
based on evidence that a defective carburetor and loose throttle caused the
accident.
Antonio Loera, 28, still faces a charge of felony hit-and- run driving in
connection with the Sept. 16 accident. He is expected to plead no contest to
that charge at a Dec. 14 hearing, said Frank Dougherty, Merced County
district attorney.

FAMILY, FRIENDS PAY RESPECTS TO STAYNER
Friends and family remembered two Steven Stayners at his funeral
Wednesday -- the boy who would never leave his father's side and the young
man who rebuilt his life after a seven-year ordeal as a kidnap victim.
About 500 people packed the local Mormon Church for the service. So many
people attended that partitions were opened and folding chairs set up in a
gymnasium adjoining the sanctuary.

SUSPECT SOUGHT IN STAYNER'S HIT-RUN DEATH
All Steven Stayner ever wanted was a happy, normal life. But on Saturday,
nearly 17 years after a kidnapper stole his childhood, a hit-and-run driver
cheated him of the chance to watch his own two children grow up.
Stayner, 24, died of head injuries at Merced Community Medical Center at
5:35 p.m. -- less than an hour after his new Kawasaki motorcycle collided
with a car that turned in front of him, the California Highway Patrol said.
The accident occurred near a migrant labor camp about two miles wes

The uncle of Steven Stayner, who survived a seven-year kidnapping ordeal and
later died in a motorcycle accident, was found shot to death Wednesday
afternoon at his home in Merced, where he had gone on his lunch break from
work.
Jesse J. Stayner died from a single gunshot wound in the chest fired from a
small caliber handgun, said Merced County Sheriff Tom Sawyer. He said
Stayner, a brother of Steven Stayner's father, was found dead on the floor

What they don't mention in this article, but was reported on a Fresno
news station last night, is that Cary Staynor was living with this
uncle at the time the uncle was murdered. I wonder if, in retrospect,
they will now suspect Cary had something to do with it?

He spends less time in prison than he kept his victim imprisoned (7+
years)??????????
Huh?
yes--the law was looser then. This was Jerry Brown's People's Republic
of California, remember.
Because of the way the laws were written that was the maximum
sentence they could give him. Steven's father was absolutely
outraged, justifiably so. After that case the laws were changed to
allow for much stiffer sentences.

Whatever happened to the "Lindbergh law," inspired by the Lindbergh
kidnappning? This was the law that got Caryl Chessman the gas chamber
even though he didn't actually kill anyone. Caryl, the "red light
bandit," was found guilty of kidnapping and sodomy, the same things as
Parnell did. Except that none of Caryl's victims were kept kidnapped
for seven years. More like seven minutes. (Assuming Chessman was
even guilty, which there's some question of.)

I always welcome replies to my e-mail, postings, and web pages, but
unsolicited bulk e-mail sent to thousands of randomly collected

Now the same crime in the same state will be treated differently.
Some states didn't have the death penalty during that period
either.
I'm surprised the guy is still alive.

Good question. I just don't get it. Why isn't kidnapping a child and
I am sorry you missed midday news. The cameras went to Parnell's
current residence. It showed his building and the reporters went from
door to door informing them about Kenneth Parnell's past. They did
not know but said "he knows all the kids by name". I fully expect
him to be moving in the near future for his own safety.

Kramer,
Did you see on last evening's news (I don't know which station--I flip between
them all) the "interview" of Parnell? He was sort of hiding behind his screen
door and they asked him if his kidnapping of Steven led to Cary's becoming a
murderer. Of course he said the two things weren't related--what else would he
say?
Hermit
Not only that. Parnell refused to participate in any kind of
psychotherapy or rehabilitation that was offered at the prison, not that
(imho) those things help. He served his sentence and was released.
