MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Mexican pop star Gloria Trevi (news) could face
homicide charges in the death of a daughter born in Brazil in 1999 and
declared dead of unknown causes a month later, according to a report.

The daily El Universal reported Tuesday that a judge handling other charges
against the singer had decided to "notify the respective authorities" that
the death of the girl, named Ana Dalay, could have been a homicide.
Trevi gave birth to the girl in a Rio de Janeiro hospital October 10, 1999.
Brazilian (news - web sites) police records showed the infant was declared
dead of unknown causes at the age of one month and two days, but are vague
on the disposition of the remains.
During an extradition hearing in Brazil in August, Trevi said Ana Dalay's
body had been thrown into a sewage canal by one of her backup singers, an
Argentine dancer named Liliana Soledad Regueiro.
Trevi -- known as "Mexico's Madonna" -- and her manager, Sergio Andrade,
are charged in Mexico with kidnapping and corruption of minors, including
the abuse of a 17-year-old girl entrusted by her parents to Trevi's care
for musical training.
Trevi is currently being held in a prison in the northern state of
Chihuahua awaiting trial, while Andrade is in Brazil fighting extradition
to Mexico.
When the law started closing in, they fled. She ended up in Brazil, in
prison. It's a long slow process to do anything in court in Latin America,
including extradition. Trevi knew that if she bore a child in Brazil, she
would then be an immediate family member of a Brazilian citizen and would
become exempt from extradition to Mexico to face charges.
So what do you know, she comes up pregnant. This is the background on how
she ended up becoming a mother.
Just an unbelievable soap opera, the whole story is really quite involved
and I'm not doing it justice. If you haven't read about Gloria and her
boyfriend/manager before, google her up and sit back for a truly juicy tale
of twisted perversion and weird loyalty.
Oh man, what a book her story would make!
