Pitchfork Killer Not High on Drugs
.c The Associated Press
MERCED, Calif. (AP) - Despite official speculation, tests show the man who
broke into a house and killed two children with a pitchfork was not high on
drugs at the time of the attack.
Merced County Sheriff Tom Sawyer said he was ``absolutely shocked'' by the
results of toxicology tests on Jonathon David Bruce, 27.
``It's clear, isn't it, that a normal person would not do this. It was bizarre.
The whole event was bizarre. That's why I was hanging my hat on, and
speculating on, drug use,'' Sawyer said.
Bruce killed 9-year-old Ashley Danielle Carpenter and 7-year-old John William
Carpenter on Aug. 23 after breaking into their home. Three siblings fled to a
neighbor's house and called for help. Deputies shot and killed Bruce after he
came at them with the pitchfork.
The tests on Bruce's blood and tissue samples found no evidence of alcohol,
opiates, PCP, LSD, marijuana or methamphetamine and only a trace amount of THC,
the intoxicant in marijuana, Sawyer said.
Sawyer said Bruce's brain will be examined ``to see if we can find anything in
there - brain tumors, a previous injury, things that might have died in his
brain because of drug use.''
Bruce had at least one drug charge on his record. In February 1999, he was
charged with assaulting police officer, resisting arrest and being under the
influence of methamphetamine.

Never ever heard of a kick from Mary J that hard.
Guess his brain was already eaten up by worms.
Was he involved in Army test programs?

Another excerpt from the Modesto Bee:
At 6 feet 2 inches tall and 250 pounds, Sawyer said, "This guy was
big. ... Big arms, big shoulders. ... And he worked out."
A crew cleaning the site of the killings needed three men to move a
couch that Bruce had shoved to barricade a door.
Sawyer said state and federal privacy laws prohibit him from releasing
any medical or mental health information about Bruce.
Detectives are still investigating Bruce and how he ended up at the
Carpenter home. "We've been consumed by this," Sawyer said.
Investigators know Bruce ate dinner at the Mandarin Shogun
Restaurant on Olive Avenue in north Merced the night before the
slayings. He left without paying. The owners did not press charges.
He was later seen walking along Bear Creek and Arboleda drives and
then on Coffee Road near Vassar later that night. Bruce did not drive a
car.
Asked if detectives had found any link between Bruce and the family,
their neighborhood or their church, Sawyer said, "Not at all. ... This,
again, is why it is such a heinous crime."
Sawyer said the Carpenters and Bruce's family had been notified of
the test results. "I have talked to his mother," the sheriff said, and
she has cooperated with authorities. "I categorize her as a victim as
well. ... She's sick about this."

**I agree, peter. I think the guy was probably schizophrenic.

***No motive at all--no one has found any link between the man and this family
and he wasn't drug-crazed. I wonder if the ME will find a brain tumor or if
it's just garden variety schizophrenia, as jb suggested.
And I don't remember him being nude. Are you sure he was?
I wonder if they checked him for the herbals.
Or maybe I read too much Jonathan Kellerman. :)

**I've seen his state of dress described as both nude, or "pulling up his
pants". I believe he was shirtless.

I thought I remembered the same thing; either he was nude or had taken
off some of his clothes in the house.

***Here's a line from an AP story on the crime:
The terror began when Jessica Carpenter, 14, awoke and saw a naked stranger in
her living room pulling on his pants.
Since when does euphoria cause violence?
I can't say that it does, but the discussion was that the criminal may have
been taking herbals since he drug tested negative.
