Fired Chilean teacher kills three in rampage

VALPARAISO, Chile, Dec 17 (Reuters) - A teacher recently dismissed from
his job
shot and killed three people, including his 3-year-old daughter, at a
high
school and city office in the Chilean city of Valparaiso on Friday and
then
shot and wounded himself, an official spokeswoman said.

Physics teacher Ivan Arancibia, was in critical condition at a hospital
in
Valparaiso, 75 miles (120 km) west of the capital Santiago, after
shooting
himself in the mouth, said a spokeswoman at City Hall in Valparaiso.

Arancibia, who had been removed from his teaching position and offered
an
administrative job, arrived at the B29 high school with his daughter,
shot and
killed the head of the school, and then shot his daughter, the
spokeswoman
said.

Local media had previously reported that his daughter was seven years
old.

``He immediately went to the Municipal Corporation of Valparaiso for
Social
Development and killed the head of the education department,'' she said,
adding
that he then shot himself. ``It appears that he suffered emotional
problems.''

After conflicts had emerged between Arancibia and his students,
administrators
offered him a job in academic planning, but he refused it, she said.
Students
had complained that he was too demanding, she said.

According to witnesses, Arancibia carried a pistol hidden in a package.

The incident occurred as students were taking exams for admission to
universities.

``We heard sirens. Everything was out of control. When we finished the
exam,
they told us what had happened,'' said one of the students who took the
test.

Television images monitored in Santiago showed shaken students sitting
with
their heads buried in their hands as police dashed about. Parents rushed
to the
school, concerned about the safety of their children.

He

``We have three dead and perhaps the person who shot them may die in the
next
few hours,'' a police spokesman told reporters.

According to witnesses, Arancibia carried a weapon hidden in a package.

``He showed signs of being emotionally unstable last August,'' said a
school
administrator on local television. ``We had agreed to find a solution
(to his
lay-off).''

Chile High-School Teacher Kills 3, Commits Suicide, Reports Say

Valparaiso, Chile, Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) -- A Chilean high school physical

education teacher angered over being fired shot and killed the school's
principal and two others before committing suicide, according to media
reports.
Among the victims was the principal's six-year-old daughter, who was
nearby
when Ivan Arancibia, who police said was suffering from mental illness,
entered
the school as students took college entrance exams. Arancibia, 47,
walked a few
blocks to another school in Valparaiso, Chile, and killed a city school
district official before shooting himself in the head when police
surrounded
him, the reports said.

Teenagers Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris in the U.S. wanted to kill as
many as
250 people during their April shootings at Columbine High School in
Colorado
that left 15 dead, Time magazine reported.

POR THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

VALPARAISO, Chile (AP) - Un profesor de escuela enloquecido asesinó a
balazos

universidades chilenas.
