Jail officer released from hospital

BLOOMINGTON - The McLean County Jail officer who was stabbed and
beaten May 28 was released from the hospital last week and may return
to work after she receives doctor approval.

Authorities say murder defendant Maurice Wallace repeatedly punched
correctional officer Olivia Anglin in the face and neck and stabbed
her repeatedly with a handmade weapon - a metal blade attached to a
wooden broom handle.

McLean County Sheriff Dave Owens spoke with Anglin before her release
from the hospital Thursday. He said she was "in high spirits and doing
well."

"I'm optimistic she will overcome her physical injuries . . . but we
don't want to rush that process," Owens said. "We want to make sure
she's healed fully . . . and comes back to work when she's ready."

Owens said a recent union meeting for jailers was held to discuss
safety procedures because of the attack on Anglin.

"We don't want this to happen again," Owens said. "We're working to
try and determine if we need to make any adjustments in our policies
and procedures."

Authorities say Anglin was attacked in a hallway as she was walking
Wallace to the shower and that the attack was part of Wallace's
planned attempt to escape.

She suffered stab wounds, lacerations, facial fractures and eye
injuries.

Wallace, 27, has pleaded not guilty in the death of 21-year-old
Illinois State University student Olamide Adeyooye, whose remains were
found October in the rubble of a burned Mississippi chicken house. He
is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, two counts of
concealing a homicidal death and one count of possession of a stolen
motor vehicle.

Prosecutors allege Wallace, who lived in the same block as Adeyooye,
killed the ISU senior in her apartment, then dumped her body in her
car and drove away.

After the attack on Anglin, he also was charged with attempted
first-degree murder, attempt to escape while armed and two counts of
aggravated battery.

Wallace remains in jail on a $3 million bond. He is scheduled for a
June 9 status hearing in McLean County court on all the charges
against him.

Defense attorneys have asked that Wallace's murder trial be moved out
of McLean County on grounds he will not receive a fair trial because
of extensive publicity.
