Beaten baby dies; suspect dad sought
March 17, 1999
SACRAMENTO, March 17 (UPI) A 1-month-old baby boy has died at a
Sacramento
hospital from injuries received in an alleged beating by his father.
Police are
searching for 22-year-old Rolando Perales Jr. on homicide and child
abuse
warrants. Paramedics brought his son to Sutter Memorial Hospital from an
apartment where he suffered a severe head injury on Monday. Pollice say
Perales
was alone with his children when the baby suffered the fatal injury.

He was only a week old when his father, Rolando Joshua Perales Jr., got
out of
jail. A week later, the baby had a broken leg, officials and neighbors
said.
Two weeks have passed and now Rolando Anthony Perales III is dead.
He died Tuesday at Sutter Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered in a
beating
Monday, police said.
The infant's 22-year-old father was being sought on homicide and child
abuse
warrants, but by Tuesday night police still hadn't located him. Child
Protective Services has begun a separate investigation of the child's
death.
The 1-month-old boy was pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. at Sutter Memorial,
where
he was being treated for a severe head injury, said Michele Quattrin,
Sacramento police spokeswoman.
Quattrin said the boy's father left his apartment in the 1800 block of P
Street
after paramedics put the baby in the ambulance, and he has not been seen
in the
area since.
Police said the baby's mother, Brandy Perales, wasn't home when the
child was
injured. On Monday night, CPS placed the baby's 3-year-old sister in
protective
custody.
"The father was alone with the children at the time of the injury," said
Quattrin.
In November, Perales was charged with attempted burglary, according to
court
records. He pleaded no contest to the same charge a month later and was
sentenced to 120 days in jail.
Three weeks ago, Perales was released from jail and moved in with his
wife,
daughter and the baby, neighbors said. A week later, the baby had a cast
on his
leg.
His parents said the 3-year-old sister broke the baby's leg by stepping
on him,
neighbors said.
CPS had no record of the family prior to Monday, but an investigation is
now
under way, said Elizabeth Foster-Ward, acting program manager for the
agency's
court services bureau.
