No charges in fatal fight

CALGARY --A German tourist has not been charged after a stranger who
attacked the visiting judo expert with a hatchet in an Alberta
campground was killed in the ensuing struggle.
The 49-year-old tourist, whose name was not released, his wife and
their daughter flew home Saturday as planned on their pre-booked
flight, police said yesterday.
Police identified the dead man as John Joseph Hewison, 38, originally
of Edmonton. He was living at the campground on the eastern outskirts
of Calgary where the fight occurred.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Glenn De Goeij said Hewison and the tourist did not
know each other and the motive for the attack remains unclear.
The bizarre incident began at 4:30 a.m. Saturday when Hewison knocked
on the tourists' camper door and told them something was leaking. When
the man stepped outside he was struck on the head with a hatchet.
Despite suffering two head wounds, he was able to defend himself using
his judo skills.

If the attacker was, indeed, a total stranger who appears to be a

a motive (which does not mean they don't have one) I'd suspect it was a
a wild assumption or a going to the wrong camper by a guy who had been
drinking all night and whose wife had either not come home or who had
taken off in the night.

Or a really badly-planned robbery attempt. Fake an excuse to get the
tourist outside, knock him out, take goods and/or vehicle or whatever. And
picked the wrong guy to try it on. If the German fellow had family inside
with him, all the more reason to be zealous in making sure you disable your
attacker.

Yay for him...

I am the daughter of the attacker, i just wanted to clear some things up from what i have gotten to know about his death. He was on the influence of drugs and alcohol. John was an all around good dad, boyfriend, friend.. when he got into drugs and things turned around, which led to this horrible incident. I just want to apologize to the tourist and his family. Even though it is some time ago i just recently found out about this (im only 15) But i am so so sorry.
