Johnson was gunned down on Reading Road and Blair in Avondale and police say the shooter not only killed a man, he also endangered others.
Medics worked to save a victim they found lying in the street while distraught friends and family looked on. Rescue workers rushed into the hospital but doctors couldn't save him. "He was around the corner. He was having problems when shots rang out. He collapsed a block or so later."
This woman says the victim was her younger cousin. "My baby. he was my heart. he was my heart. He will be missed."
Dozens of others watched as police block intersections along Reading Road and collected evidence. Police say Reading was packed with people when the shooter opened fire. "When we first got here, we probably had 100 to 150 people that was standing around."
Witnesses say they tried to help the victim while he was suffering in the street. "In the end we all have one judge, one jury. Could have stopped a:l this killing that's every day on the news, all day every day."
And the victim's cousin is hoping there is no retaliation as a result of this shooting. She's hoping they let police do their job and find the person responsible. At this point officers only have a very vague description of the suspect. They say at this point some witnesses have started to come forward and they are hoping that gives them more information.

The decay of this ghetto community, is a direct result of the thugs who infest it. It's mostly public housing and people living off the system. So you can't expect people who are to sorry and lazy to support themselves and family, to create a positive, productive community. Thats why crime is so hiogh here. Instead of working for what they have and reinvesting. They rob, shoot and kill each other for it. Nobody with a lick of sense, would open a business in this area. Black violence is way too high

In the same Aspen Village Apartment complex 12 days ago, police think the same man did the same thing to another young woman. A sketch of the face she saw went up today. BJ Johnson is a neighbor: "Does he know someone around here? This may be why he's here getting people's patterns."
The violent crime squad and patrol officers are watching for the muscular black man, believed to be around the age of 30. They want people in the neighborhood to watch, too. "Watching neighbors, watching surrounding Queen City, see if if they see anyone that looks similar to composite, please, please call."
Captain Russ Neville, Cincinnati Police: "Both apartment victims lived on the ground floor. One of the young women was sleeping with the patio door open."
Management says it tries to make it hard for someone to break in the sliding doors. Brent Neiger of Fath Properties: "Added level of protection is the charlie bar, in the middle, which provides less door movement. We add screws to reinforce it, make it less likely to be opened."
Police believe there is a likely connection between an attack on May 31 here on Queen City. A woman got off the bus and was walking when she was pulled into a wooded area. That attack happened right down the street from the two apartment assaults. For some reason, the suspect feels comfortable around here. Police hope they can work with the residents to change that.
Fath Properties put up a thousand dollars for information about his identity. The Wheel of Justice added another thousand to the reward.

The suspect, 23-year-old Howard Jones, was wanted on drug, weapons and obstruction of justice charges, police said.
Officers went to a home in the 4200 block of Virginia Avenue to arrest Jones, but they said he barricaded himself in an attic.
Officers went inside with a K-9 unit and arrested Jones, who was dehydrated and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Sandra Jones said her nephew had been an honor roll student in high school but became caught up in the street life.
Police closed portions of Virginia Avenue during the standoff.
"We're just happy he's alive. He'll go through court, and he is safer in jail than he is on Cincinnati streets," Sandra Jones said.
Police said Howard Jones has a host of charges dating back to 2006, including drug trafficking, obstruction and weapons violations.
"He was involved in a car chase at his last arrest, where he fled, provided false information, so his routine today was very similar: fleeing, hiding, ducking, dodging and lying," said Lt. Col. James Whalen, of the Cincinnati police.

Investigators said it's unusual that crooks are targeting those who can't fight back, and what's even more outrageous is that they still do it even if they only get away with a few dollars.
Joanne, an attack victim said she went to the store up the street from her Roselawn Assisted Living Community when she noticed someone following her.
"I turned and asked, 'What do you want?' I turned my chair so it made him off balance, and then he hit me in the chest," she said.
Joanne said she's still scared of her attacker and she's angry that some people think she's weak.
"It makes me feel like I'm not the person I am. I'm not an easy target, but I'm not a strong person. I'm in this wheelchair for a reason," Joanne said.
Joanne said she only had change so the culprit didn't really get away with anything.
Detectives said Joanne is not alone. To date, they know of four cases similar to hers.
"Usually, they assault the victims right away, by punching them in the face, knocking them to the ground and taking their property," said Investigator Jeff McKinney.
Detectives said they think the crimes are related. McKinney said, "They're teens or young adults between 15 and 21. They work in groups of two and three, looking for people who they believe are easy targets."
Joanne said she now carries a cellphone and stun gun. She said she also has a plan should she be attacked again.
"I'll find ways to take care of myself. I'll run over him, that's what I say," she said.
Investigators said they have some pretty good leads. They said they've notified assisted living communities and are looking at some surveillance videos.
In the meantime, they are urging disabled people and the elderly to stay in well-lit areas and travel in groups.

King then reached for his wallet and started leafing through it. When he could not produce a police badge, police started a pat down on his body after informing him that it is unlawful to impersonate a police officer.
That's when police say they felt a bulge in King's pocket and caught a whiff of what they say smelled like marijuana.
After further investigation, police say they pulled 11 bags of marijuana out of King's pocket as well as $224 in cash.
King, 37, of Gilbert Avenue in Walnut Hills was arrested on possession of marijuana, drug trafficking and impersonating a police officer charges.
On Tuesday, when Judge Bernie Bouchard looked down at King and read the latter allegation, King shook his head.

Cincinnati already has a curfew, but it hasn't stopped young people from taking to the streets at night. And the local NAACP president says that's just not good enough. Local 12's Angela Ingram has more on how the organization is hoping to work with police.
In some neighborhoods, NAACP president Chris Smitherman says it's not uncommon to see large crowds of teens hanging on the corners late at night. The city already has a curfew ordinance, but Smitherman says parents need to take some responsibility and help enforce it. "One piece is we want to keep our youth safe, but clearly we want to send a parental, moral message that your youth should not be out after 11 o'clock at night."
The organization says large crowds can lead to violence. Smitherman points to an example of an 11-year-old girl shot in her leg earlier this month. After the shooting her mother told Local 12 News that her daughter is normally inside by 7 pm, but she made an exception. "They shouldn't be out here shooting like that, it's just uncalled for, it's ridiculous."
The organization put a motion on the table to work with police to help them enforce a curfew. It's illegal for anyone under 16 to be out without an adult after 10. And, 16- to 18 year olds need to be inside by midnight. Both have exceptions for things like emergencies and employment. Smitherman says re-enforcing some kind of curfew is necessary to keep neighborhoods safe. "We're hoping tonight to really send a message to city leadership that they have our absolute support in enforcing that curfew. So, we
don't want them walking on eggshells, we want them to get out and enforce the curfew policy."
Smitherman says right now, police usually take teens violating curfew to juvenile court and give them a ticket. But, he would like an exception that allows police to take them to a rec center and give their parents a chance to explain.
The NAACP is working on a plan to speak with police and council members about re-enforcing the ordinance.

Officers say it began early this morning when a large crowd gathered in parking lot of the Marathon gas station next to Vito's Nightclub at Reading and Summit. The manager of nightclub was worried about fighting amongst the crowd, and alerted several off-duty police officers who were working security. At the same time, the manager and the officers heard and saw a gunman fire shots into the crowd. When the officers confronted the gunman and ordered him to drop his weapon, he fired on the officers. The p
olice officers fired back.
One person showed up at University Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police say he is associated with this incident, although they do not know if he was shot before police arrived or during the reported exchange of gunfire.
The gunman ran from the parking lot and police chased him on foot but he got away. So far, officers have not released a description of the gunman. Officers say they did interview the many witnesses to the shooting, and many in the crowd had weapons which were confiscated.
The two officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by police. Their names have not been released.

A judge sent Calvin McKelton to death row last November for two murders. But in the city of Cincinnati, he is suspected in many more.
The man who was called "C-Murder" was convicted in the execution-style killing of a witness who saw him kill Fairfield attorney Margaret Ellen. After that, Cincinnati Police started a campaign. The goal is to go after McKelton's entourage. Homicide Vice and Intelligence have been working together. Local 12's Deborah Dixon shows us what they've done could change the murder scene in the city.
Calvin McKelton had a history of brutality and intimidation. Witnesses seldom showed to testify against him. Some ended up dead, or disappeared. His reign of terror ended with his Butler County conviction for killing his girlfriend, and the witness who saw him do it. McKelton got away with so much for so long with a little help from his friends. "If we can't get you on homicide, we'll get you on drug trafficking. If we can't get you on drug trafficking, we'll get you on a bad gutter. It doesn't make any
difference to us."
That was the goal of a meticulous investigation that started a year ago, to go after McKelton's associates. Some were already in prison such as Angelo Howard. He murdered four people. So investigators targeted the rest of McKelton's entourage. Fourteen have been arrested so far, including Michael Howe, McKelton's right hand man, his intimidator. Nearly all are charged with drug and gun crimes. "It certainly disrupts the loosely based network they had. Curb the violence. That's the object, curb the violen
ce."
"None of McKelton's entourage is charged with a murder, yet. But that could change. Anyone commit murders on his behalf or helped him go that far? Yes. Can you tell me which murders? No."
This mission could prevent some murders. And it could lead to murder charges. Some witnesses who have been afraid might feel it's safe to come forward.
McKelton is on death row. There will be years of appeals before he is executed.

ROSELAWN Cincinnati police said they exchanged shots with a gunman
overnight after the man fired at them.
Reading Road was shut down to traffic between Section and Summit roads
while police investigated for nearly seven hours before reopening at 7:45
a.m.
The incident began with an altercation inside Vitos nightclub off Reading
Road near the Marathon gas station just before midnight, said Assistant
Police Chief Vincent Demasi.
At least two people were thrown out of the nightclub, and a fight ensued
outside between the nightclub and gas station, he said.
While the club-goers were being tossed out, a nightclub manager alerted
police, who happened to be across the street working a security detail.
The officers, Steven Bauer and Wiley Ross, got into a cruiser and drove
across the street. As they drove, several shots rang out from the gas
station parking lot.
The officers were pulling into a driveway between Vitos nightclub and the
gas station when they encountered two suspects.
Bauer, who was driving, got out of the cruiser and ordered one of the men
to stop. The man turned and fired at both officers, Demasi said. Bauer
returned fire. Ross did not. No one was hit, and both men ran off and
remain at large.
We are extremely grateful that neither officer was hurt, Demasi said.
While police combed the area for the two gunmen, a 22-year-old man with a
gunshot wound to his right shoulder showed up at Good Samaritan Hospital
via private vehicle. He was transferred to University Hospital, and police
were speaking with him early Tuesday.
The man was listed in good condition. Police were not sure if he was shot
by an officer, or one of the suspects, Demasi said.
The incident is being investigated as a felonious assault on police
officers.
A man who answered the phone at Vitos on Tuesday refused comment.
The Marathon gas station was closed overnight. When a manager arrived to
open the business for the day at 6 a.m., he couldnt get in while police
continued to investigate and collect evidence from the parking lot.
Police took surveillance video from the gas station parking lot to
review. The gas station was permitted to open at 11 a.m.
What can we do? said manager Harry Patel, 41. Ive been here 10 years.
Police are still interviewing several witnesses and are asking anyone with
information about the incident to call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040

Officers from Colerain Township Police and Hamilton County Sheriff's office were conducting surveillance in the parking lot of the Staples store in the 8400 clock of Colerain Avenue, near the entrance ramp to Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway around 11:45 a.m. Thursday. They saw suspicious activity and approached a silver vehicle. The officers identified themselves but the driver of the vehicle tried to flee by ramming surrounding vehicles, including the officers cruisers.
The officers made several demands for the driver to stop-police say all those demands were ignored. The suspect then allegedly tried to run over an officer who was standing outside his cruiser. At that time, one officer fired a shot at the driver. After he was shot, the driver surrendered.

The "bad guys" in these scenarios are 12-year-olds. The victims are 9-year-olds who went from being kids to experiencing scary, adult situations.
James, 9, enjoys playing on swings, slides and monkey bars and riding his bicycle. He was taking a ride on his bike when two 12-year-olds came up behind him.
"They had a gun and checked my pockets... and said 'Lay down,' " James said.
The "robbers" held a BB gun to his head. They ran away when they realized James didn't have anything for them to take.
"I was scared," James said.
His mom got mad and called the cops.
"If a child will pull a gun on another child, they'll pull it on an adult," she said.
James' mom could have pressed charges but decided 12-year-olds don't belong in jail. She wants other parents to know what's happening on city playgrounds.
"They're practicing on how to either get themselves killed or get themselves in jail," she said.
Her 9-year old got back on his bike. He still loves to play outside, but his mom said she will be keeping a more watchful eye on her child so he can act his age.
"I don't think it's fair for him to have to look over his shoulder or be worried that someone else is going to walk up and take something that he has," she said.
Officers at the District 1 police station helped parents handle this situation in a positive way, in hopes of keeping the kids out of the system.

Cincinnati Police's new chief James Craig heard about the incident and showed up in plain clothes at the scene. He said he was wanted to be sure all the officers were okay. He also was very concerned about the possibility that shots had been fired at officers, especially since there have been recent incidents of that type of activity.
He said he is trying to be very hands-on right now and not just behind a desk as he starts his new job as head of the department.
He told Local 12 "I like to be out and about. I'm trying to learn the city and certainly I want to support the officers for the great work that they're doing. When I become aware of a critical incident, it is my plan to respond."
Late Saturday night, some officers in District 3 where this incident happened said it does not appear the man who was arrested will be charged with firing shots at police.
<Nigvid at site>
Police said that during a traffic stop, the passenger of the vehicle fled. When officers pursued the man, they heard gunshots, police said.
The man was eventually found hiding under a car in a fenced-off parking lot and taken into custody.
Police said they also recovered a weapon. It was unclear Saturday evening whether the man fired at officers or whether the gun accidentally went off.
Cincinnati’s new Police Chief James Craig appeared at the crime scene in plain clothes and stressed the need to crack down on crime.
“We have had a rash of shooting incidents, particularly those that involve shooting at officers, and that’s a big concern of mine,” Craig said.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired just after 5 a.m. Friday. One of them spotted the body in the street.
The victim is a black man in his 20s, said Detective Rudy Gruenke of the Cincinnati Police Homicide Unit.
Detectives are still collecting evidence, including several shell casings that were found in the middle of the street.
“It’s a quiet residential street,” said Gruenke. “There’s not a lot of foot traffic at 10 minutes to 5 in the morning, so we don’t have a lot of witnesses.”
Gruenke said that the homicide unit had not been called to this area in the past.
“Once we have made a positive identification we can see where he’s from and how he plays into this neighborhood,” said Gruenke.
“We had several people call hearing the gunshots, but at this point we haven’t identified anybody who actually saw anything other than the victim laying in the street.”

CINCINNATI -- Police are on the hunt for an ice cream truck, after a 13-year-old boy says he was robbed.
Sjors Verhaak lost control of his bike while riding on the sidewalk along Madison Road in Walnut Hills on Wednesday. He broke both of his arms.
Sjors thought he was having a bad day, until he heard an ice cream truck approach.
"It's making the noise. It has the light on top to attract attention, playing a classic ice cream song," he said.
But what happened next is hard to believe. One of two men inside the truck jumped out and took Sjors' bike.
"He goes up there and takes left, and then he's gone. He took my bike and I'm here with a few broken bones," Sjors said. "This seems like something from a heist movie or something."
The crash and the crime were captured by security cameras at Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services.
The video shows a truck with the words "Polar Bear Ice Cream" on top. On the back of the truck is a sign that says "Watch for Children."
Sjors' mother, Annemarie Brandt, is stunned at what happened.
"If this is then somebody that is despicable in his behavior, I would think that this man is a threat for other kids," Brandt said.
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to call Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040.
