Okay folks, let me start off with a few quick notes to all. Firstly, I will
be VERY busy both today AND Sunday, having almost NO posting time either day.
So be advised of this fact, and hopefully other dedicated newshounds will pick
up my posting slack. Secondly, the AOL Usenet newsreader is suffering from some
glitches, at least it did yesterday. Several posts I made yesterday did NOT
show up on the AOL newsreader, as far as I know, but DID show up on Dejanews,
so I am NOT reposting them, but do wish to encourage AOL users to consider
looking up my posts of yesterday on Dejanews, if you want to be sure you read
them all. A LONG, detailed update on John Armstrong, and a fascinating listing

On we go, as I TRY to squeeze in 3 or 4 new thread items today. Here is a
HUGE update on the one and only John Eric Armstrong, newly discovered 26 year

fascinating new info. John has now been charged with FIVE Detroit area SK'ings
of gal hookers. Detectives & investigators are RAISING the overall harvestee
toll. They now sound CONVINCED that John harvested at least 15, and VERY
POSSIBLY as many as THIRTY victims, almost ALL of them gal hookers. One was
apparently a transvestitite hooker that John mistook for a gal.
We learn that police believe John began serially killing 8-10 YEARS ago! This
means he was ONLY 16-18 years old when he started! A real child prodigy, and it
makes his SUPERIOR ability to avoid ALL suspicion up until January, all the
more remarkable. John has NO past criminal record at ALL.
It is GREAT to see John TALKING about his CHILDHOOD, and revealing at least a
little bit of the TORTUROUS TRAUMA, abuse, brutalization, that he, just like
all serial killers, was subjected to as a child. I do NOT have time to offer an

In police custody as a suspected serial sex killer, ex-sailor John Eric
Armstrong has woven a remarkable story about himself.
As a youth in New Bern, N.C., he was the fat kid who got teased and pushed
around, was sexually abused as a child and lost his high school sweetheart to a
guy who lavished her with expensive gifts.
For these reasons, Armstrong, 26, told police, he began a global campaign of
terror in 1991, killing 18 prostitutes, including five in the Detroit area
since December.
Investigators are confident he killed the Detroit-area women, but beyond that
they wonder whether Armstrong -- a man who has the vanity plate "Baby Doll" on
the front of his Jeep Wrangler -- is exaggerating.
"There are gaps in his time line that we are concerned about," said Detroit
Police Cmdr. Dennis Richardson, head of the major crimes division. "However,
nothing outside of Michigan has been confirmed yet. Our investigation is
continuing very aggressively and very meticulously."
Armstrong -- whom friends and family call Eric -- has told police he has either
killed or tried to kill every prostitute he's ever been with.
Police say Armstrong, who moved with his wife and young son to Dearborn Heights
about eight months ago, may have killed up to 30 women -- and one male
transvestite -- usually by strangulation after sexually assaulting them.
Armstrong has claimed to have killed women coast-to-coast and in Asia and the
Middle East.
While serving aboard the USS Nimitz from 1993 to 1999, he said he killed women
while the ship was in port and then disappeared to sea.
Armstrong -- who police say was charged in warrants Thursday with five murders
and three attempted murders -- has told investigators he has killed two
prostitutes in the Seattle area and one near Spokane, Wash.
Cases unconfirmed
Dick Steiner, an investigator with the Washington State Attorney General's
Office, said officials there have not been able to find any open cases of
homicides for the dates and locations Armstrong has given Detroit police.
"Nothing has panned out so far," he said. "The problem is that it turns out now
he is changing his story so much, nobody's going to have a tendency to believe
much of what he has to say" about homicides in Washington.
Wayne County Sheriff's Detective James Hines and Detroit Police Officer Donald
Johnson were the first to interview Armstrong at Detroit police headquarters
after his arrest early Wednesday morning.
Armstrong described in great detail each of the killings, with facts that only
the killer would know, Hines said. During the confessions his mood "would
fluctuate from calm to an appearance of anger. But the anger didn't appear to
be sincere," Hines said.
Armstrong, who is about 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds, had good recall of the
slayings.
"He's a very unassuming person," Hines said.
Johnson, an officer with Detroit's Violent Crimes Task Force, said Armstrong
was open and talkative while being interviewed. He has been remorseful, often
crying, Johnson said.
"One of the first things he said was 'I need help,' " Johnson said of
Armstrong. "Looking at him, you could never tell that he was capable of the
crimes."
Armstrong told investigators he moved to Dearborn Heights because his wife's
family lived there. Since coming to the area, he has worked as a fueler at
Metro Airport, a security guard in Novi and a clerk at Target, police said.
He told police his wife is pregnant with their second child and that they were
having marital problems.
After he listened to Armstrong confess to various murders, Hines said he called
Armstrong's wife to let her know he was in police custody and was facing
criminal charges.
The detective said he hung up on Katie Armstrong after a minute-long
conversation. He said he had warned her that he wouldn't continue the
conversation if she kept yelling at him.
Katie Armstrong accused police of harassing her husband, Hines said.
"She's in extreme denial," said Hines. "Apparently she didn't want to hear what
I had to say. She was a very loud and rambunctious woman."
Katie Armstrong could not be reached for comment Thursday.
The Rev. Fred Zimmerman of South Redford Christian Church in Redford Township
said he married Katie and Eric Armstrong on Sept. 25, 1998.
'A very nice man'
"He was a very nice man, outgoing," Zimmerman said. "You would never have
guessed anything like this. I can't imagine Katie would have known about this."
Zimmerman said the wedding was well-attended and that Armstrong wore a white
tuxedo.
"It was a very upbeat, happy wedding," he said. "Happy times for the whole
family."
Zimmerman said the couple had met on the Nimitz; the minister said he didn't
know Katie was pregnant -- she gave birth to their son on Feb. 4, 1999.
"I only met with them once or twice," Zimmerman said. "If I'm not mistaken, he
came up from Virginia some place ...He was supposedly applying for the state
police in Virginia. That was his hope after he got out of the military.
"I think that fell through for some reason -- if all this is true. It might've
been a smoke screen," Zimmerman said.
Melonie Sandlin, 24, said she had gone from River Oaks Grade School in Dearborn
to Dearborn High School, with the former Katie Rednoske and considered herself
a best friend.
"She didn't date much in high school," Sandlin said, adding that she thought
Armstrong "was her first love."
Sandlin said Eric and Katie Armstrong had recently gotten mortgage approval for
a modular home in Belleville.
"She's got to be devastated," Sandlin said of Katie Armstrong. "I was going to
call her, but I don't know what to say."
Eric Armstrong's mother Linda Pringle, reached at her home in New Bern, said:
"I just don't believe the things they're saying."
Sgt. Raymond Garvey, of the New Bern Police Department, said there were no
records of Armstrong being involved with the police, although Armstrong
reportedly told Detroit police he killed his first prostitute in New Bern at
16.
"No sir, as far as I know this man didn't exist until today. We have no record
of him doing anything illegal during his stay here in New Bern."
A woman who answered the phone at a home near Pringle's home in New Bern said:
"He was a nice boy; his wife is a nice lady, and he's got beautiful parents and
they're hurting right now."
Terry Fuhrman, assistant principal at New Bern High School, said he could not
confirm that Armstrong attended there.
Armstrong's wedding announcement in the New Bern Sun Journal said he is a
graduate of the high school, and Fuhrman said there was someone by that name in
the senior class of 1992.
"If he went to school here, he was not a memorable character," Fuhrman said. He
has been at the school for 16 years and has been assistant principal for 10.
Police in Norfolk, Va., are investigating whether Armstrong is linked to the
killing of Linette A. Hillig in March 1998. Hillig's body was found behind a
bingo parlor.
Police reports said there was evidence that Hillig had been sexually assaulted
and was run over by a car.
The Nimitz, with Armstrong aboard, had docked in Norfolk on March 1 after
spending time in port in Mayport, Fla., on Feb. 26 and 27.
Earlier this week, Detroit and Dearborn Heights police had said Armstrong was
responsible for four murders of Detroit prostitutes. On Thursday, they added a
fifth to the list, Monica Johnson, a Detroiter in her 20s who worked as a
prostitute in the Michigan Avenue/Livernois area. Police said Armstrong picked
her up Dec. 3, offered her money and had sex with her. Police said he then
killed her and dumped her body at an underpass at Springwells and I-94.
Johnson's body was discovered hours later by a passerby. Like the other Detroit
victims, she had been strangled.

NB native confesses to killings
Armstrong may be linked to local crime

A New Bern man suspected of killing at least 18 people worldwide apparently led
an inconspicuous life during his youth, according to former classmates.
However, Craven County District Attorney W. David McFadyen Jr. is looking into
the possibility that John Eric Armstrong may have been involved with the
disappearance of a New Bern convenience store clerk in the early 1990s.
McFadyen said Thursday night that Armstrong had confessed to killing a local
woman when he was 17-years-old. Armstrong, in custody in Detroit where he is
accused of at least four murders there, was in New Bern at age 17.
“The first thing that comes to mind during that time frame was the
disappearance of a Neuse Boulevard convenience store clerk,” he said. “She
disappeared around the holidays in 1990 or 1991. It was sometime near Christmas
or New Years. Her bones were later found in the Bridgeton area. That’s the only
thing I recall in that time frame.”
But, the murder to which Armstrong had been confessing might have occurred as
early as 1989, McFadyen said.
Further details on the case were unavailable at press time.
Armstrong, 26, who was arrested Wednesday in Detroit, is accused of murdering
at least four women in that city. Armstrong has been cooperating with police
and officials believe he may have killed as many as 18-20 worldwide.
However, New Bern law enforcement authorities were not familiar with Armstrong
and said he didn’t have a record here.
“When we found out about this [Thursday] morning, we started to check into the
young man and his history to see if we could tie him to any unsolved crimes in
the area,” Sgt. Raymond Garvey of the New Bern Police Department said early
Thursday. “But we have no record of any criminal activity on this young man and
nothing to connect him to any crime in the city. When he was here, he was
behaving himself.”
Armstrong attended both West Craven and New Bern high schools, graduating from
the latter in 1992.
“No, I don’t recognize him,” said Tony Heckman, who graduated from New Bern
High School in 1991.
Many former classmates couldn’t recall Armstrong. Others remembered him as
unassuming.
“He was very quiet and didn’t have a lot of friends,” said former classmate
Sami Marsh. “I think he might have played Dungeons and Dragons. I think that
crowd did. He was an introvert.”
Armstrong’s mother, Linda Pringle, had no comment, but his step-grandmother
said she was shocked by the news.
“He was home about a month ago,” said Lois Pringle. “He was sometimes home for
holidays. To me, he was a fine person.”
Following his high school graduation, Armstrong enlisted in the Navy and served
about eight years as a fueler on the USS Nimitz.
Authorities believe Armstrong may have killed victims throughout the world at
ports where the ship docked.
“There may be as many as 18 to 20” deaths worldwide, Detroit Assistant Police
Chief Marvin Winkler told the Associated Press Thursday. Some of those may
include prostitute strangulations in Seattle, Hawaii, Virginia, Hong Kong,
Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Korea and Israel, as well as North Carolina.
“As the investigation keeps going on, bodies keep popping up. The numbers keep
increasing,” Officer Octaveious Miles told the AP. “There is a similar pattern
that ties them all together that creates a trail.”
All of the victims were women, who were strangled, except one. That was a man
who apparently was killed in Seattle. It wasn’t clear how the man died.
Monday afternoon, Detroit police found the bodies of three prostitutes on
railroad tracks in the city’s west side and arranged a Tuesday night lineup of
suspects. Several prostitutes chose Armstrong from the lineup, according to
Detroit Police Officer Treva Blansett.
The first body had been placed in the area four weeks ago, the second three
weeks ago and the third on Monday, police Chief Benny Napoleon said.
From the start, police thought they were dealing with a serial killer, Winkler
said.
“You know when you find three bodies at different states of being decomposed
... you know it is the same person. The scene kind of talks to you,” he said.
“It came together, and within 48 hours we had this matter closed.”
Armstrong has been cooperating with authorities since his arrest Wednesday
afternoon, Detroit Police Officer Deanna Wilson said.
“In our area, he’s being arraigned for those three deaths and another in
Dearborn Heights,” said Blansett. “But we’re not sure how many killings he was
involved in.”
The women killed in Detroit and Dearborn Heights were also sexually assaulted,
Winkler said.
Wilson said the department was investigating Armstrong’s role in other killings
within the state, but would not say how many.
“He is still cooperating, though,” she said. “Everything is still pending.”
Armstrong, who married Katie I. Rednoske, a Michigan native, Sept. 25, 1998,
had moved with his wife and 1-year-old son to Dearborn Heights about eight
months ago.
He was discharged from the Navy in April 1999.
He had been working for the past month at Detroit Metropolitan Airport,
Napoleon said.
Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Agacinski told the AP Armstrong would
be charged and arraigned today on five counts of premeditated murder and three
counts of assault with intent to murder.
The murder charges carry mandatory sentences of life in prison if convicted.
The other charges carry sentences of up to life in prison.
The other jurisdictions would then decide whether they want to extradite him to
try him there.
“I would think some states would like to do that ... to give closure for the
victims and their families,” Agacinski said.

UPDATE 1-Michigan man suspect in global murder spree

DETROIT, April 14 (Reuters) - A former sailor will be charged with murdering
five prostitutes in Detroit at the end of what may have been a 10-year killing
spree that left women dead in ports-of-call around the globe, police said on
Thursday.
John Armstrong, 26, arrested on Wednesday as he cruised a seedy Detroit
neighbourhood in his black Jeep, will be charged with the deaths of five women
in Detroit as well as with three assaults on women who escaped his attacks,
according to Robert Agacinski, head of the repeat offender's unit at the Wayne
County prosecutor's office.
Agacinski said the charges will be filed on Friday. Of the five Detroit
victims, three were found along railroad tracks in the last four weeks. The
dates and circumstances of the two additional victims added on Thursday were
not revealed.
At least some of the Detroit area victims were strangled, and a few of those
that escaped recounted to police how he beat them and tried to strangle them.
Agacinski said investigators were looking at ``many, many'' other murders in
which Armstrong might have been involved.
WWJ radio in Detroit said Armstrong could be linked to as many as 20 deaths,
including a sixth Detroit-area slaying for which he was under investigation
when arrested.
``This guy has created terror around the world. He is no longer in a position
to kill,'' said Detroit Police Chief Benny Napoleon.
Investigators said Armstrong told them he committed his first murder in his
native North Carolina at age 17. They said he could be responsible for similar
slayings in Virginia, Washington state, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and
Israel.
Napoleon said Armstrong was a member of the crew of the aircraft carrier USS
Nimitz. But U.S. Navy officials said they had not confirmed he was in that
service or on that ship.
He worked refueling aircraft at Detroit's Metropolitan Airport at the time of
his arrest and lived in a quiet neighbourhood with his wife and one-year-old
son in the nearby town of Dearborn Heights for about eight months.
Police said Armstrong was questioned following the January death of a
prostitute in Dearborn Heights after he told police he found her body in a
stream. But investigators said they did not have enough evidence to arrest him
at the time.
``This is not going to be solved, this won't be completed, in the next week.
Literally we will be months dealing with other governments and police officers
around the world,'' said FBI Special Agent John Bell.
Police said they received several calls from prostitutes who said they had sex
with and then were beaten by a man matching Armstrong's description.

Ex-sailor suspected in 20 deaths

NORFOLK -- A former aircraft carrier Nimitz sailor who is suspected of being
an international serial killer has confessed to killing at least five
prostitutes in the Detroit area, police said.
Detroit police and the FBI suspect John E. Armstrong, a native of New Bern,
N.C., of killing 18 to 20 women in the United States and abroad. One slaying
may have occurred in Norfolk in March 1998, when the Nimitz docked here for
refueling and overhaul.
Detroit detectives arrested Armstrong, 26, Wednesday morning on a tip that he
fit the description of a man who had attacked a prostitute days earlier.
In later interviews, Armstrong confessed to killing the five Detroit-area
women, police said. Detectives said Armstrong described in great detail each of
the killings, with facts that only the killer would know.
Detroit police believe Armstrong's alleged killing spree may have begun eight
years ago, when he joined the Navy in Raleigh. Detroit police and the FBI are
trying to match a list of Nimitz port visits between 1992 and April 1999, when
Armstrong was discharged from the military, with a list of unsolved killings in
cities across the world.
Detroit police believe they can link Armstrong to the Detroit slayings and to
three in Seattle, two in Hawaii, two in Hong Kong, and one each in North
Carolina, Thailand, Singapore and Virginia. Other slayings may include
prostitute strangulations in Japan, Korea and Israel, police said.
While authorities tried to piece the case together, friends gathered to comfort
Armstrong's mother in New Bern. A man who identified himself only as the
family's pastor answered the door at their home and said there would be no
statement.
But he continued, ``We don't know how this happened . . . Do you know what
happened to Jeffrey Dahmer? Nobody knows. If you ask me, the power of Satan got
into him.''
Detroit police told reporters there that Armstrong originally confessed to the
1998 Norfolk homicide, then changed the location to Newport News.
Janet Cox, Newport News police spokeswoman, said detectives there have found no
such link and have not been contacted by Detroit police.
Norfolk police have not confirmed information about the unsolved slaying of a
prostitute whose body was found March 5, 1998, four days after the Nimitz
pulled into the area.
The body of Linette Ann Hillig was discovered behind a bingo parlor in the 1700
block of E. Little Creek Road in Norfolk. Navy officials could not confirm
whether Armstrong was on board the Nimitz when it pulled into Norfolk.
Police records show that Hillig was charged with prostitution at least seven
times.
She was run over by a car, according to a police incident report. The report
also stated that she may have been sexually assaulted.
Armstrong, who supervised a barber shop aboard the Nimitz, married Katie
Rednoske, 22, a crewmate aboard the Nimitz, in September 1998.
The two were wed in Redford, Mich., on Sept. 25, according to their marriage
certificate.
Their son was born in February 1999.
While the couple was in Hampton Roads, they may have lived in Newport News.
Several people in the River Mews section of Newport News said they remembered
Armstrong, but couldn't confirm whether he lived in the neighborhood.
Sailors coming off the Nimitz on Thursday said they had heard the news of
Armstrong's arrest. But in interviews outside Newport News Shipbuilding, where
the ship is now docked, sailors said they were told by their superiors not to
talk to the media.
Navy officials said Thursday that Armstrong enlisted under the delayed entry
program in Raleigh on April 13, 1992. He went to boot camp for eight weeks in
Orlando, Fla., and was assigned to the Nimitz on the West Coast, officials
said.
He was never assigned anywhere else, officials said.
Navy officials said that Armstrong was not the model sailor, but he was not a
discipline problem either.
During his eight years in the service, Armstrong received the Navy/Marine Corps
Achievement Medal; two good conduct medals; the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon;
the Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon; the National Defense Service Medal;
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; and two Sea Service Deployment ribbons.
Most of those awards are received by everyone aboard ship, a Navy official
said.
``He was not the best of sailors, nor the worst,'' said one Navy officer who
asked not to be identified. He had never been in trouble with the Navy, never
been taken to captain's mast, a form of non-judicial punishment.
The officer said that Armstrong didn't have high evaluations on his annual
performance or fitness reports.
He was discharged from the Navy on April 30, 1999.
Detroit police said Armstrong, his wife and their son moved to suburban
Dearborn Heights eight months ago.
Until his arrest, Armstrong had worked as a refueler at the Detroit
Metropolitan Airport, they said.
One of the Detroit victims' bodies was spotted Monday by a passenger on a
train, and police later found two other bodies nearby.
Police said they believe that the three women were killed at different times in
Armstrong's car and then dumped in the isolated area.
From revelations about Armstrong so far, his alleged behavior seems to fit that
of an organized serial killer, experts said Thursday.
Organized serial killers, according to models developed by the FBI and other
experts, target strangers and have a tendency to travel away from their
neighborhoods -- even their own cities -- to kill.
And prostitutes tend to be among the most likely victims in terms of serial
killers, said Deborah Laufersweiler-Dwyer, associate professor of criminal
justice at the University of Arkansas and a former Norfolk police officer.
``Nobody's going to necessarily note someone picking up a prostitute and they
tend to go with anyone easily,'' she said.
Research shows, she said, that organized serial killers are typically
sociopaths who have a problem with authority.
``They don't like rules, they think they can make up the rules as they go
along,'' she said.
According to records, Armstrong was born in New Bern in November 1973 and grew
up in the area.
Officials at New Bern High School said a John Armstrong was listed in a
yearbook with the 1992 senior class. But there was no photograph of the man in
the yearbook and school officials could not confirm if it was the same person
being held by police.
Armstrong's mother, Linda, said through the pastor that she would not comment
until her husband returns to New Bern today.
``She knows nothing, she knows nothing,'' the pastor said. ``But (Armstrong)
hasn't been charged yet, he hasn't been arraigned yet, he hasn't been convicted
yet.''

SPOKANE, April 14 - A possible Spokane connection to a suspected serial killer
now in custody in Michigan emerged Thursday. A Detroit news station is
reporting that 26-year-old John Eric Armstrong has confessed to killing a woman
in Spokane, along with 17 other people over the last nine years.
We spoke to police in Spokane and Detroit. They can neither confirm
nor deny that he did in fact kill anyone here, but say if it did happen it
would have been back in 1994.
Armstrong spend 8 years in the Navy and traveled extensively. According to
his confession, Armstrong left a trail of bodies wherever he went. He says the
murders began in 1991 in North Carolina, and claims to have killed four people
in Washington between 1993 and the summer of 1996. Armstrong says he also
struck in Virginia, Hawaii and most recently in Michigan. The confession goes
on, including overseas killings in Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore. Detroit
Police are investigating murders in Japan, South Korea and Israel that he may
be connected to as well.

Every serial killer is unique. The REASON why prostitutes are most often
targeted, is because SOCIETY OVERTLY and ACTIVELY ENCOURAGES all of it's

John Eric Armstrong is a serial killer because of the CHILDHOOD brutalization
