Possible new lead being investigate in missing TV anchor case

by Bob Fisher, KRIB, Mason City

A possible new lead has developed in the case of missing Mason City TV
anchor Jodi Huisentruit. A Hancock County man who has a cabin on Eagle Lake
near Britt has wondered about a grave-shaped digging near his cabin that
appeared just days after Huisentruit disappeared 11 years ago.

Duane Arnold last month paid an engineering firm two-thousand dollars to
survey Eagle Lake with ground-penetrating radar. Some of the survey's
results have come back, with a possible hit in the area Arnold is
questioning. Officials with National G-P-R Services say the area has the
right look because it has the shape and boundary characteristics of a
burial.

Hancock County Sheriff Scott Dodd says he'll analyze the new information and
make a decision soon on possibly digging up the area. Mason City police
investigators say portions of Eagle Lake were already dug up a few years ago
as part of a possible lead on the case, but Arnold says they didn't check
this spot and need to check again.

There may be a break in the search for Minnesota native Jodi Huisentruit,
the TV news anchor that disappeared 10 years ago on her way to work at an
Iowa station.
An Iowa man says the answer to this mystery is behind his cabin, 30 miles
west of Mason City. Duane Arnold's property is on Eagle Lake in Hancock,
Iowa. He said he noticed a grave shaped digging there just days after
Huisentruit disappeared.

A few weeks ago, Arnold paid an engineering firm $2,000 to survey the land
with ground penetrating radar. The crews' radar did spot something deep
beneath the earth, and Arnold says it's a body. Engineers confirmed that
there is something there, but can't say exactly what it is.

Arnold wants the Hancock Sheriff's Department to dig to see what lies
beneath the earth. He said he's sure he'll find the answers that hundreds
have searched for over the years.

"They're drainin' the lake, it's way down now...Now is the time," Arnold
said. "It's either now or never. We're in the right area. I think she's
there. I just gotta know...I've lost a lot of sleep over this," Arnold
continued. "I really, truly believe she's right down there somewhere."

The case has never really left the public eye, and Iowa police regularly get
tips as to Huisentruit's whereabouts. But still, no Jodi.

Investigators from Mason City have searched that area before, but Arnold
says they missed the spot. The Hancock County Sheriff has not decided yet
whether to dig in the area.

Volume after volume, the Jodi Huisentruit files line the shelves of
Investigator Al Haubrich's office.
"And there's four drawer file cabinets.full of interviews," said Haubrich,
an Investigator with the Mason City Police.

Those interviews are with people like Keith and Betty Walsh, who remember
the screams they heard shortly after 4 a.m. on June 27, 1995. That was the
morning Jodi Huisentruit, a Minnesota native and TV anchor, disappeared.

"Just help, help. That's basically all I heard," said Keith Walsh.

According to police records, at least five neighbors heard those cries for
help. Two people described the cry as not a horrified scream, but one of
surprise. Yet no one called police.

"I just thought it was somebody playing in the park," said Betty Walsh.

Police went to check on Jodi around 7 a.m., after she failed to show up for
her morning anchor job at KIMT-TV in Iowa.

They found her personal things scattered around the parking lot by her car.

One of the first people police questioned was John Vansice, the last person
to see Jodi. She had stopped by his house the night before to see a
videotape of a surprise birthday party he had thrown for her.

"I even named my boat after her just because she's Jodi. She's been such a
big part of my life lately and she just makes me feel so good," Vansice
said.

Police files help create a timeline of Vansice's whereabouts. One woman told
investigators Vansice was supposed to meet her at 6 a.m. for their daily
walk, but was running late.

Records show an hour later, about 7 a.m., Vansice met another friend at a
gas station, and told him, "Jodi is gone." When the friend asked what he
meant, Vansice told him she didn't show up for work.

That conversation took place at roughly the same time police arrived at the
scene. Vansice and his friend went to look for Jodi at her apartment. When
the landlord asked what he was doing there, records show Vansice replied,
"I'm looking for Jodi" and said he wanted to see what time they were going
waterskiing that day.

Vansice has denied any involvement in Jodi's disappearance.

"To name a boat after her and the gifts and things it appears he could be
obsessed with her," Haubrich said, but quickly added that investigators
can't link him to her disappearance.

And they haven't been able to link others. This past year, police went back
and took another look at convicted sex offender Thomas Corscadden. Court
records show he claimed to have had sex with Jodi. But his palm print did
not match one found at the scene.

A scene that to this day has a rather eerie feel.

The current landlord says a psychic was here recently. And, police recently
returned to the apartment to search a crawl space. Police also checked

"Sometimes it's a waste of time, but you never know," Haubrich said.

Not casting any suspicion on the man who owns the cabin, but damn! He's
known something was dug up on his property and it was grave-shaped, no
less. He knew a woman was missing from his area and, eleven days later,
notices the digging. He knew that the searchers "missed that spot" when
they combed the area and yet he did NOTHING about it for eleven years.
Eleven years!

He's "lost a lot of sleep over it". Gosh, think how her family must
have felt, asshole. If he was this alarmed, he should have contacted
the cops. Don't you think they would have taken it seriously, not even
two weeks out, and sent someone out to inspect it?

Yes, definitely speculation being called 'fact' in that post. However, what
about this "fact": "Clothing belonging to Jodi Huisentruit were recovered

from a mid 1980's white Ford Econoline Van owned and operated by. . . Keith

Dwayne Nelson"? Is that true, do you know?? Anybody know?

I have searched all over the Internet and cannot verify this
information at all. In fact, I found another site where you posted
this info and were then told that Law Enforcement tried to verify this
information and found it to be false. Please post some REAL reference
to verify your information. Not just "this is fact". You state that
Jodi's remains are in Minnesota. Where EXACTLY did you get this
information? Maybe only YOU know where she is instead of Nelson?

Look at JimMac's posting past. Just one of those people who likes to
"help" LE by sending them lots of oddball tips and theories. He's said
that Lori Hacking's body was 100 yards from her car and that the man
who committed suicide when LE got to him in the Julie Holmquist murder
case (Curtiss Cedergren) - and whose gun matched the murder weapon -
wasn't the "real" killer. JimMac just seems to have an active
imagination.

Hacking KILLED THREE WOMEN! The first was his girlfriend, the second
was his wife, the one he married under an assumed name, the third was
Lori Soares. They all were checking into his past when he shot them
with the same .22 bolt action rifle. He tried to plead insanity, but
when he was doing his nude clog dance in the moonlight, he was wearing
his sandals! Self preservation is the first sign of sanity. Hacking had
buried his first wife 100 yards from her car. At that time he had lied
to the Police who were digging up the local landfill. I nailed him and
I got him CONVICTED THREE TIMES! LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE! Even the Press
missed that story. They missed the preliminary hearing.

They couldn't have done otherwise. Mark Hacking waived his right to a
preliminary hearing. The only one who apparently attended it was you -
in your fevered imagination.

I saw an episode of America's Most Wanted concerning Mark Hacking
and he was wanted for TWO PREVIOUS MURDERS. They (F.B.I.) didn't know
he was wanted for those other murders. I told this to the family of the
late Lori Soares through their family's web site and then his brother
questioned Mark in the psychiatric hospital. Mark Hacking was convicted
and sentenced to Life Without Parole for THREE MURDERS. According to
Court Documents in FEDERAL COURT. He also had the misfortune of having
a femal Judge. The F.B.I. was looking for Mark Hacking for two previous
murders, They didn't know his name, until I told them.
