If I remember correctly this boy was adopted. He also took his little
sister shopping shortly before the murders and purchased the ax with
which he killed her.

What a guy.

Hello,

Today a boy named Joshua Jenkins admitted in court to killing both his
parents, both his grandparents, and his sister. That's what I call a first
class family massacre!

Joshua used a hammer, knife, AND ax, to beat, stab, AND bludgeon all
five of his close family relatives to death. Certainly he showed
versatility in this rampage. After the killing spree Joshua had the
presence of mind to set a fire at the home in order to try and cover up
the crime. Good thinking for a 16 year old.

He is being tried as an adult, and pled guilty today to all the
killings. A mental competency hearing is still to be held.

Certainly this is a most impressive rampage, and it demonstrates that
age is no limiting factor when it comes to properly expressing one's own
rage and hate.

Take care, JOE

The following news report appears courtesy of today's Associated Press
news wire:

VISTA, Calif. (AP) - A Las Vegas teen-ager accused of killing five members
of his family and setting a fire to cover up the crime changed his plea
Wednesday and admitted to the crime.

Joshua Jenkins, 16, showed no emotion as he entered guilty pleas to five
counts of first-degree murder and a single charge of arson. If he is found
competent, he will face up to 140 years in prison.

Jenkins was accused of using a hammer, knife and ax to beat, stab and
bludgeon to death his parents, grandparents and sister. Defense attorneys
said Jenkins was angry because he was sent to a home for troubled youths
in Los Angeles. His parents and sister lived in Las Vegas.

Killed were George Jenkins, 50; Alene Jenkins, 48; William Grossman, 78;
Evelyn Grossman, 74, and Megan Jenkins, 10. The slayings occurred the
night of Feb. 2 and the morning of Feb. 3 in the Grossman's Vista home in
northern San Diego County.

Police said Jenkins set several fires in the condo and fled. He was
arrested the following morning a few miles from the scene.

Hello,

Here is some additional information on this most fascinating case out of
California. We learn that a jury, NOT a judge, will decide whether or not
Joshua was sane when he killed both his parents, both grandparents, and
his sister, on February 2nd, 1996. Please note, this killing rampage took
place 2/2/1996. NOT in 1997. Joshua was NOT 16 years old when he committed
this massacre, he was only 15, which makes the rampage even more
impressive and unusual, IMO.

We also learn that it was after he killed his 2 parents and 2
grandparents, that he took his 10 year old sister shopping with him,
bought an ax, and killed her with the ax! This occurred the day AFTER he
slaughtered the four grown-ups.

Most fascinating! Joshua killed all four adults with a knife and hammer,
he obviously could have just as easily killed his 10 year old sister in
exactly the same manner, but he chose to let her live for a few hours,
then to take her with him, on a shopping trip. On this trip he bought the
ax, went back home with his 10 year old sister, and then killed her with
the ax! What i'm wondering about is this: Did the 10 year old sister KNOW
that her parents and grandparents were dead, killed the night before by
Joshua? Or was she completely unaware of this? I suppose it was a fairly
big condominium, and it's quite possible that the sister had her own room,
the 4 killings took place in other rooms, and thus she might have been
unaware that Joshua had done anything out of the ordinary, and just
thought he was being a good brother, inviting her along to go shopping!

IF she did know that he had killed her parents and grandparents the
night before, she must have been terrified during the shopping trip,
especially when he bought the ax!

By the way, this report does confirm that Joshua was adopted.

Take care, JOE

VISTA, Calif. (AP) - A 16-year-old Nevada boy accused of killing five
members of his family last year and setting fires to cover it up changed
his plea Wednesday to guilty.

Joshua Jenkins' trial had been scheduled to begin Thursday, but now a jury
will decide whether Joshua Jenkins was sane at the time of the killings.

Jenkins was 15 when he was accused of killing his adoptive parents and his
grandparents on Feb. 2, 1996, by hitting them in the head with a hammer
and stabbing them during a visit to his grandparents' condominium. The
next day, he allegedly took his 10-year-old sister to buy an ax and killed
her with it.

Police said Jenkins set several fires to cover up the slayings. He was
arrested a few miles away in his parents' Mercedes-Benz.

Prosecutors said Jenkins had been distraught before the killings over
having been sent to a Los Angeles home for troubled youngsters after
attacking his father.

On Feb. 2, his parents and sister picked him up for a weekend visit with
his grandparents.

Jenkins' defense lawyer, Jack Campbell, said the plea change was in the
teen-ager's best interest but was unusual because neither the judge nor
the prosecutors made concessions.

``The prosecution won't even talk to us,'' Campbell said. ``They made it
clear they want this boy in prison for as long as possible.''

Jenkins pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder and a single
charge of arson. If found competent, he could receive 140 years to life in
prison, prosecutors said.

Hello,

This case continues to fascinate and intrigue me. Here is a very long,
but extremely worthwhile, news article on this case, from a local area
newspaper, the San Diego Union-Tribune. We learn many interesting details
on this case, and on Joshua's mindset and thoughts and statements to
police and psychiatrists, concerning his rage and hate, and detailing the
emotional turmoil that was going through his mind prior to the night that
15 year old Joshua slaughtered both his adoptive parents, both
grandparents, and his little 10 year old step-sister.

A lot of background info on Joshua is contained in this article, plus
more details on the exact tactical methods that Joshua employed in
carrying out this family massacre.

Among the things I found most fascinating was that Joshua killed his
father first, I think for obvious tactical reasons, since he represented
the greatest threat to Joshua, being the strongest adult in the house. The
next day, after he had taken his little stepsister on the ax buying
shopping trip, he waited until she fell asleep on the couch, then hit her
10 times with the ax, then stabbed her 9 times with a knife.

Joshua has a psychiatric history dating back to age 5, when he began
exhibiting unpredictable behavior and angry outbursts. In the police
interrogation immediately after his capture, Joshua said he had thought
about killing his parents "every single day, every minute" in the days
before the massacre.

The prosecution intends to present famous psychiatrists, including Park
Elliot Dietz, who testified at Dahmer's trial, among many others, to
declare that Joshua was sane at the time of the killings. This Park Elliot
Dietz is a real piece of work. He ALWAYS testifies for the prosecution,
saying that the person on trial was sane, but somehow he still has
CREDIBILITY in the eyes of the court/judge/jury! This asshole is nothing
more that a paid hit man for the prosecution, IMHO. He doesn't care about
the TRUTH, if he did, he would also testify for the defense, at least once
in awhile, arguing that a defendant WAS insane at the time of the crime.
If anyone has the iformation, I would like to know exactly at how many
trials Dr. Dietz has testified, and exactly how many of those times he
testified for the DEFENSE, arguing that the defendant was INSANE.

In 1993, at age 12, Joshua wrote the words "Helter Skelter" on a
teacher's car, and went to the teacher's home, calling him a "Bastard".

In 1994, Joshua is quoted by a psychologist as having said that he
"perceived rocks and needles flying out of the television screen, sticking
in his skin".

By 1995, Joshua's step-father already expressed his fear of Joshua, so
much so that he would not go into his own house unless his wife was there,
out of fear that Joshua might attack/kill him!

Right after his arrest, at age 15, when asked why he committed this most
impressive massacre, Joshua spoke about "A world all messed up because of
gangs and drugs", and declared "I'll be 18 in about 2 years, and if I
don't do this, i'll have to be on my own with a car, pay bills and have a
job and life would be even harder".

Makes sense to me, Joshua. The world is messed up, and any sensitive and
intelligent boy would recognize this fact.

Take care, JOE

The following news article is from the April 13, 1997 online edition of
the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper:

Murder trial to view night of Vista terror | Teen-ager's
mental state in family slaughter is at issue

Greg Moran
STAFF WRITER

13-Apr-1997 Sunday

VISTA -- The killings, breathtaking in their ferocity, are almost too
painful to contemplate.

Near midnight Feb. 2, 1996, Joshua Bradley Jenkins, 15 years old, wielded
a
hammer, knife and ax, and began a spree of mayhem that wiped out three
generations of his family.

Dozens of blows from the hammer and knife killed his parents, George
Jenkins and Alene Jenkins, 50 and 48, and his grandparents William and
Evelyn Grossman, 78 and 74.

George Jenkins, who had gotten out of bed to go to the bathroom, was
first;
the others awakened to the terror.

Jenkins dragged the bodies into a bedroom in the Grossmans' Vista
condominium and told his 10-year-old sister Megan to pull the covers over
her head and go back to sleep.

The teen-ager showered, drank a root beer and watched television. In the
morning, he drove Megan to a home supply store, bought an ax, and when she
fell asleep on the couch at the condominium, he hit her 10 times with the
ax, then stabbed her nine times with a knife.

After setting a half-dozen fires around the condo, Jenkins took off in his
parents' silver Mercedes-Benz. Recognized by a convenience store clerk, he
was captured the next day. Within hours, he confessed to investigators.
More than 14 months since that gruesome night, Joshua Jenkins is to go on
trial for murder.

The jurors who will be chosen beginning this week ultimately will be asked
to determine if the killings were the work of a coldly enraged teen-ager,
or the horrific product of a boy gripped by mental demons.

Jenkins, now 16, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to five
counts of murder and one of arson.

His lawyers, Jack Campbell and William La Fond, contend that inexorable
mental illness rendered the youth incapable of knowing right from wrong,
or
truly appreciating the consequences of murdering his family.

With the issue of guilt all but answered, the focus of the trial promises
to be on the lengthy and detailed psychiatric history of Jenkins, starting
when he was 5 years old.

Over the years, George and Alene Jenkins had sought help, guidance and
answers from a long list of therapists, doctors and experts. They had
grown
fearful of their son's unpredictable behavior and angry outbursts.
But in their search, the defense is expected to contend, the parents were
unable -- tragically -- to accept the one diagnosis that may have helped
their son and saved them: that Joshua was mentally ill.

That is a theory the prosecution is prepared to vigorously contest. Though
he has declined to comment extensively on the case, prosecutor Mark
Pettine
has indicated there is more to tell about Jenkins and his family than
defense lawyers have said.

"The public will hear the full story of what happened when the trial
starts," he said in a brief interview last week. "Our position from the
outset has been he was not insane at the time those crimes were
committed."
In previous court hearings, Pettine said the slayings came of a simpler
motive: anger and resentment.

Joshua was furious that his parents sent him to Vista del Mar, a private
group home and school in Los Angeles for emotionally disturbed youths, and
transferred that rage into a murderous plan, Pettine said.

In the police interrogations, Pettine has noted, Jenkins said he had
thought about killing his parents for weeks.

In the days just before, the thoughts came almost nonstop -- "every single
day, every minute," he told investigators. And months earlier, he had
contemplated using a crossbow to kill his father in Las Vegas, where the
family lived.

The trial largely will come down to a battle of experts.
Two court-appointed psychiatrists, intended as independent analysts,
concluded that Jenkins suffers from schizophrenia and was legally insane
at
the time of the killings. A psychologist appointed by the court, however,
found Jenkins was legally sane but "floridly psychotic" when he attacked
his family.

While the defense says it will rely on these opinions, prosecutors have
hired their own experts, including well-known forensic psychiatrist Park
Dietz, who examined Jeffrey Dahmer, Eric Menendez and other notables.
Dietz's report has not been made public, but attorneys on the case said he
has concluded Jenkins is "malingering," or essentially faking the symptoms
of mental illness.

Elusive answers

In addition to evidence about Jenkins' mental state during the killings,
jurors are also likely to hear about his family's efforts over the better
part of a decade to find the key to their child's puzzling behavior.

George and Alene Jenkins have been described as tireless advocates for
their oldest child, whom they adopted minutes after he was born.

Court records say that his birth mother's twin brother had a history of
learning difficulties and emotional problems, before he died in a traffic
accident at 16.

The first few years with Joshua, while the Jenkins lived in Los Angeles,
were apparently uneventful. He was a "happy-go-lucky child" up to age 4,
the parents later told one physician.

Over time, however, his erratic behavior -- impulsive, isolated and
oppositional -- troubled the parents.

Beginning at age 5, Joshua was treated by a series of psychiatrists,
psychologists, neurologists and counselors, first in Los Angeles and later
in Las Vegas, where the family made their home at the time of the
killings.

The conclusions from these experts varied, according to an extensive
report
by Thomas MacSpeiden, a court-appointed psychologist.
Joshua was learning disabled. No, he had attention deficit disorder
without
hyperactivity. He was oppositional. He was autistic. He had phonological
disorder. He had attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity.

At age 7, one doctor noted "obsessional and at times bizarre thought
processes." By age 10, the boy was described as withdrawn, a loner with no
friends, by a teacher at a Los Angeles school for children with learning
disabilities.

Also at this time, Joshua's parents became concerned over his wild mood
swings. He flew into rages, punching walls and overturning furniture.
Jenkins' academic performance always bordered on failure, and this
frustrated both him and his parents. By 1993, when the family moved to Las
Vegas for greater opportunities in the real estate business, Jenkins'
failings in school were twinned with increasingly menacing actions.

`Helter skelter'

Early the next year, school records show that a teacher confiscated a
martial arts weapon from Jenkins. He wrote the words "helter skelter" on a
teacher's car, went to the teacher's home and called him "bastard,"
according to MacSpeiden's report.

In a 1994 evaluation by Judith Skomars, a psychologist with the Clark
County School District in Nevada, Jenkins was quoted as saying he
perceived
rocks and needles flying out of the television screen, sticking in his
skin.

One of his teachers said Joshua had threatened to kill himself and others.
Skomars concluded Jenkins was autistic and should be placed in the
district's Severely Emotionally Handicapped program. It was a
determination
George and Alene Jenkins vigorously contested, even threatening to sue the
district.

Eventually, in 1995, the district classified Jenkins as learning disabled
and not emotionally disturbed after another evaluation by a doctor who
disagreed with Skomars' assessment.

But by then, George Jenkins had grown fearful of his son, MacSpeiden
wrote.
He told a friend he would not go into his own house without his wife there
because, MacSpeiden wrote, Joshua hated him and wanted to kill him.

In July, Las Vegas police were called to the Jenkins home after the
teen-ager reportedly attacked his father. A month later, the family
decided to enroll him in Vista del Mar.

They told an official there that they were concerned about the effect of
their son's behavior on Megan, and said he "reigns terror over us" through
his tantrums and rages.

Jenkins said he heard rodent noises in his head, saw flashes, muttered
threats. After differing diagnoses, the staff at Vista del Mar felt the
teen-ager needed psychotropic medication. A brain test to rule out
epilepsy
and help devise a medication regimen was scheduled.

On Friday, Feb. 2, George, Alene and Megan Jenkins drove to Vista del Mar
to pick up Joshua for a weekend visit at the Grossmans' condominium.
Evelyn
Grossman had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and her family was
gathering for support.

Spiders and visions

Since the crimes, Jenkins has been in a special unit of Juvenile Hall for
accused teen-age killers. When he is brought to court, he walks in
quickly,
averting eye contact with anyone, including his attorneys.

His thick black hair is combed back on his head, and dark eyebrows shadow
hazel eyes. Almost 17, he has a husky build and is paunchier than when
arrested.

When he sits, he usually keeps his gaze down. He remains eerily still,
hands in his lap and elbows on the arms of the chair.

He told one psychiatrist in Juvenile Hall that he feels compelled to count
the bricks in the wall of his room, and to eat spiders and bugs.

He said he has seen visions of his parents, sister and grandmother. He
hears voices, and has told psychiatrists he believes the devil is inside
him, and now blames demonic possession for triggering the carnage against
his family.

But when he spoke with investigators 14 months ago, he said nothing about
devils.

Instead, he spoke about a world "all messed up because of gangs and
drugs."

He said he thought about killing himself.

Jenkins said he was bothered by the future.
He told police, "I'll be 18 in about two years, and if I don't do this,
I'll have to be on my own with a car, pay bills and have a job and life
would be even harder."

Hello,

Here is yet another news article on Joshua Jenkins, providing a few more
details on the tactical methodology that Joshua used in carrying out the 5
killings.

This report also contains comments from Joshua's classmates, very
interesting comments about how he was an outsider, ignored and teased by
his classmates.

Take care, JOE

Courtesy of the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper, online edition:

06-Feb-1996 Tuesday

LAS VEGAS -- Flowers and a teddy bear filled an empty chair yesterday at
the Las Vegas elementary school where 10-year-old Megan Jenkins used to
sit, and classmates asked the question no one has yet been able to answer:
Why?

Megan's 15-year-old brother, Joshua Jenkins, has confessed to the slayings
of his parents, grandparents and sister over the weekend.

Joshua told sheriff's investigators that he bludgeoned his parents, George
Jenkins, 50, and Lynne Jenkins, 48, and grandparents, Bill Grossman, 78,
and Eileen Grossman, 74, with a hammer as they slept in the Grossmans'
Bronze Way condominium on Friday night, then slashed their throats with a
knife, sources said.

The next morning, when Megan got out of bed, her brother told her the
adults were "still sleeping, don't wake them," sources said, and the
siblings went for a drive in their parents' silver Mercedes.

Sources said Joshua took Megan shopping for an ax, which he later used to
kill her and hack at the dead bodies of his other victims. He then dragged
the bodies into a bedroom and set them afire in an apparent attempt to
cover up the crimes, sources said.

Yesterday at Eisenberg Elementary, where Megan was in the fifth grade, a
crisis team of psychologists was on hand while the principal broke the
news
to the girl's classmates.

The children expressed their emotions by writing in journals, drawing
pictures and penning letters and stories.

"It was a day of shock, of disbelief, and anger," said Adah Kennon, a
psychologist for the Clark County School District, "a lot of overwhelming
anger and crying."

Meanwhile in San Diego yesterday, Sheriff Bill Kolender and top
administrators were briefed by homicide detectives, who are still groping
for an explanation.

"That's the one thing we haven't been able to figure out," said one
official. "There's no clear motive there. I think he's broken and he can't
be fixed."

Officials said Joshua showed no remorse before or during interviews with
detectives. "While he was sitting in the station, you'd think he was in
custody for being a runaway juvenile, he was just so unconcerned," a
source
said.

Neighbors said the youth was "violent" and "emotionally disturbed" and had
threatened to harm his parents. Las Vegas police had been called to the
family's house in an affluent gated community at least twice last year
before his parents decided to send him away to a private boarding school,
Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, in the Palms area of Los Angeles.

Classmates at Cimarron-Memorial High School in Las Vegas, where Joshua
spent his freshman year before enrolling at the private school in the
fall,
described the boy as a quirky loner.

"I don't think anyone really knew him that well," one classmate said.
"Kids
picked on him. He was a dork, kind of a nerd."

Another student, who was in an art class with Joshua, said the teen was
sometimes preoccupied with matches and bragged that he "was going to blow
up a teacher he didn't like."

"He was just kind of weird," another classmate said. "I knew he was going
to do something weird. He could hit his head on the wall and wouldn't even
feel it."

"He didn't talk to anybody," said Noelle Oglesby, a 16-year-old sophomore
who had a class with Joshua last year. "He really had no friends. He was
an
outsider.

"Still, I couldn't believe it when I heard what he had done."

Las Vegas school administrators said Joshua was enrolled in a special
education program for children with extreme learning and emotional
disabilities in the 1994-95 school year, but noted that he had
successfully
completed the year without any disciplinary problems.

Administrators were surprised when he didn't show up for school in the
fall
-- after he had been sent to the Los Angeles school -- and called his
parents to check on him. "He was doing quite well here," an administrator
said. "He was not violent, not disruptive. He was low-key, not
well-known."

School records show that Joshua suffers from severe dyslexia, a reading
disability that affects 15-20 percent of all children. His mother, Lynne
Jenkins, asked Terry Stover, founder of the Nevada Alliance of Dyslexia,
to
find help for her son.

"These are really caring parents," Stover said. "They were always fighting
for Josh."

Neighbors said the Jenkins had put their two-story house up for sale so
they could move closer to Joshua, who was having a hard time in his new
school.

"He struggled a lot, had a tough time in school," Stover said of the boy's
time in Las Vegas. "He worked hard. I have a hard time dealing with the
fact that he could commit such a heinous crime.

"I'm just freaked out. . . . Learning disabilities cause a great deal of
frustration, but to say it could drive you to murder your family would be
extremely far-fetched."

District Attorney Paul Pfingst said he wants to get Jenkins tried on
murder
charges as an adult. The boy is being held in Juvenile Hall with his first
court hearing set for tomorrow.

You know, Joe, I find it extremely offensive that you are looking to
turn Josh Jenkins into a teen idol -- do you work for TIGER BEAT?
I knew this family, and I know what Josh meant to his family. This was
not an abused child, he was deeply loved by his family. It's extremely
likely that his birth mother could have passed something along to him (I
know nothing about her, she could have been on drugs, etc.).
This is a kid filled with remorse who would be shocked to learn of your
fawning over him. Not everyone who commits such crimes is proud of it.

Hello,

No, I don't work for TIGER BEAT. I simply found a photo of Joshua on the
internet, I was very glad and happy to have found the phote, since I was
very curious to see what Joshua looked like. Upon looking at the phote, it
struck me that he a handsome boy, and it struck me that many serial and
mass killers attract groupies and admirers. So in my post I stated that he
was handsome, IMO, and that I was wondering if he had attracted any
groupies or fans.

It is impossible for anyone other than Joshua to know whether or not he
was abused. Only he would know this, along with whoever abused him, IF he
was abused. Nobody else would know. Please note that I did not state in
any of my comments to this thread that Joshua had been abused. I do not
know if he was or not. I have found no evidence, in the articles I've
read, to suggest that he was abused. But that is not PROOF that he was
NOT abused.

>> It's extremely

I don't think that anyone is born evil. Nobody is born with the need or
capacity to slaughter 5 people at age 15. Whatever reality caused Joshua
to kill those 5 family member, I believe he developed this reality during
the course of his childhood. Is it possible that he has an organic brain
disorder, and did not suffer any abuse at all, from his family? Certainly
this is possible. But even so, the EXPERIENCES that he had during
childhood, his interactions with his family, classmates, etc... played a
role in causing him to initiate this killing rampage.

>> This is a kid filled with remorse who would be shocked to learn of
your
>>fawning over him.

He might be filled with remorse. But in all the news articles I've read,
he has never been described as expressing any remorse over anything that
he did. He chose to kill his parents, grandparents, and sister. At the
time of the killings he felt he had a legitimate right to kill them, and
he acting on this right. Unless and until he expresses remorse over his
actions, I tend to assume that he does not regret the fact that any of
them are dead, or that he killed them. If you have an article or news
report which states that Joshua did express remorse, please post it here!
By the way, I don't think Joshua needs or should feel any remorse. All he
has to do is justify his reality to himself. He did that on the night and
day of the killings, if he can still do that today, I say that's fine and
dandy. He does not "owe" anyone any remorse, although if he legitimately
feels remorse today, that is his perfect right, too.

>> Not everyone who commits such crimes is proud of it.

No, certainly not. Some are proud, some are ashamed. Some are
remorseful, some are not. Different strokes for different folks.

testified for the DEFENSE, arguing that the defendant was INSANE.>>

OHMIGOD! It's happened! I'm agreeing with JOE. I've had the same opinion
of Mr. Dietz for years. He has testified in a LOT of trials and has the
MONEY to prove it. He's a local boy and real creep, IMNSHO.

It just so happens that 100% of the time, Mr. Dietz's objective analysis
has turned out to be on the side of those who pay him to analyze the
evidence. It's just a coincidence!

"...There is no proof that Joshua was not abused..." illogical,
fallacious thinking:

I knew him personally as well. As much as anybody can know anyone personally. I was in and out of shrinks offices since 5 too. That's usually an indicator of extreme abuse. Definitely not normal for a "happy go lucky kid" to be in the mental health system at 5. And Josh never talked period so who are you to think that YOU would be the one person he would open up to?

Vista Del Mar only gets funding if they diagnose and treat psychiatric illness. I'm a software engineer today and I'm supposedly learning disabled and they also diagnosed me with depression and had me on several types during my year stay there partly with Josh. Also I read somewhere else he hallucinated rodents and bugs. The place was crawling with rodents and roaches and spiders, no such thing as collective hallucination, especially 100%.
