Here's another update on our Breast Severing self-confessed serial killer in
California, Wayne Adam Ford. This will be a brief update, in terms of my
commentary, because I have already spent a LOT of time focusing on this case
over the past few days.
We have another egotistical, oney and spotlight hungry "expert" on serial
killers weighing in with his opinion that this is an "extraordinary" case of
serial murder, due to the fact that Wayne turned himself in and confessed.
Jack Levin, a criminologist and book author on serial murder, weighs in with
the following comments: "Most serial killers are sexual sadists. But Ford is
different in that he is not a sociopath. He feels out of control and doesn't
want to kill again. This is a very rare thing.'' All we have here is more
blind and biased assumptions being made by an arrogant outsider who THINKS that
by superficially studying imprisoned serial killers, he can gain enough
knowledge to make blanket assumptions about the nature and True Reality of all
serial killers. The fact is, SOME serial killers are "sexual sadists". Others
are not in the least bit motivated by sexual sadism. And the notion of a serial
killer "feeling out of control and not wanting to kill again", being a "very
rare thing", is also NOT TRUE. Plenty of serial killers are CONFLICTED within
their core True Reality, and do engage in a constant battle with themselves,
trying to keep themselves from committing more murders. They very rarely TURN
THEMSELVES IN, because they rationally value their freedom.
I personally think that the fact that Wayne turned himself in SHOULD help to
BOLSTER an insanity defense, if he chooses to pursue that route. It is NOT SANE
for a person to willingly give up his freedom and surrender to police, KNOWING
that he faces the great likelihood of being sentenced to Life in prison, and
the POSSIBILITY of receiving a legal murder sentence as well.
So far, we have not heard much about Wayne's mental status, but in an
interesting new detail below, we learn that Wayne made it all the way to
SERGEANT in the marine corps, heartily embracing the primary message and lesson
that the military TAUGHT him, which is that he MUST commit MURDER, mindless
murder, with no moral consideration, upon the command of fellow humans. In 1985
however, at the STILL tender age of 23 or 24, having RAPIDLY moved up the
military chain of command to Sergeant, Wayne was THROWN OUT of the military.
Discharged due to MENTAL PROBLEMS. Very interesting. Perhaps he came to realize
that in order to accurately reflect his True Reality, Wayne's life path should
NOT involve the immoral mass murder of complete strangers based upon the ORDERS
of a SUPERIOR human. Instead, I like to think that he came away from his
military brainwashing embracing his absolute RIGHT to KILL any and every human
being on planet earth, but REJECTING the notion that ANYONE has the right to
ORDER him to commit any type of "legal" murder, as is done in the military
system.
We learn that with the FIRST of his 4 victims, Wayne did indeed strangle the
gal to death with his bare hands WHILE they were having sex. He then cut off
BOTH her legs, BOTH her arms, BOTH her breasts, AND her head! Hey, that is what
I call a nicely thorough and complete dismemberment job. He then dumped some of
the body parts in one area, buried other body parts in a different area, and
KEPT some of the body parts in his freezer. He did indeed keep these body parts
WRAPPED IN PLASTIC, perhaps to try and prevent freezer burn, as Reets suggested
in her/his post. We also learn that the found dismembered body parts were NOT
themselves mutilated, but were cut with a LOT of skill and precision, leading
the coroner to think that the killer might be a surgeon or have some other
medical background. It turns out that Wayne does not have any such background,
he is simply a talented dismemberer who obviously was also a neaty and tidy
fellow who valued precision and did not like to do sloppy work.
Interestingly, he buried the victim's head and arms along the shore of a
river that is NAMED the "Mad River". Ha! Pretty cool. He actually lived right
near this river, so it's not clear whether he chose to bury the severed head on
this particular riverbank as a macabre way of teasing police or amusing
himself, via the river being officially named "Mad River".
The coroner goes on to say: "I see a person who wanted to be meticulous in
trying to get rid of everything. He didn't want to be caught. In fact, he made
a statement that he would never have been found out if he hadn't confessed."
Yes indeed, Wayne did NOT want to be caught, he loved himself and his freedom.
But somehow the siuation with his wife and son ended up affecting his ability
to think rationally, leading him to turn himself in. Sad. The fact that Wayne
was OBVIOUSLY very intelligent and a tactically brilliant killer who WOULD in
all likelihood NEVER have gotten caught by police, only makes his decision to
turn himself in voluntarily all the more TRAGIC, from my point of view.
Take care, JOE

Ford Was Killer With Conscience
By JEFF BARNARD
ARCATA, Calif. (AP) -- Wayne Adam Ford, the long-haul trucker who told
authorities he killed four women he picked up for sex, is an extraordinary case
because he came forward and confessed, according to an expert on mass murders.
Ford, 36, allegedly told investigators he turned himself in last week so he
wouldn't reach the ultimate target of his anger: his ex-wife.
``Most serial killers are sexual sadists,'' Jack Levin, a professor of
sociology and criminology at Northeastern University in Boston, said Sunday.
``But Ford is different in that he is not a sociopath. He feels out of control
and doesn't want to kill again.
``This is a very rare thing.''
Ford went to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department in Eureka last Tuesday
and said he had killed two hitchhikers and two prostitutes. As proof, he
offered a severed woman's breast in a plastic bag, most likely cut from a
prostitute he picked up at a truck stop on the edge of the Mojave Desert.
Mutilating victims is common among serial killers -- Milwaukee's Jeffrey Dahmer
and Danny Rolling, who preyed on students in Gainesville, Fla., both did it.
But for one to come forward willingly is unusual, said Levin.
Ford is being held on $1 million bail in the slaying of an unidentified woman
whose headless torso was found Oct. 26, 1997, near Eureka. He has pleaded
innocent to first-degree murder.
He has confessed to killing three other women he picked up and had sex with
during his trucking trips. All of the bodies were dumped in waterways.
Ford told investigators he took his first victim to a trailer in Arcata and
strangled her while having sex, Coroner Frank Jager said Sunday.
Then he used a saw and knives to cut off her head, arms, legs and both breasts,
authorities say, dumping the torso in Ryan Slough, a popular canoeing spot
outside Eureka. The head and arms were buried in a gravel bar on the Mad River
near Ford's home.
Ford allegedly kept other parts wrapped in plastic in his freezer. Only days
before confessing did he take them out and bury them.
Authorities hope to find the head, so they can use dental records to identify
the victim. Jager said Ford took investigators to the spot, but high water may
have washed the remains out to sea.
Ford told investigators he was getting more and more angry with his ex-wife in
Las Vegas, whom he often complained would not let him visit their 3-year-old
son. He had limited court-ordered visitation rights.
``He said he was ashamed of what he was doing and his anger was mostly directed
against his wife and he was getting more angry at her every day,'' Jager said.
``And if he didn't do something, he would end up doing the same thing to her
and that worried him, because if something happened to her, his son would be an
orphan.''
Ford told investigators he is the son of a career Army enlisted man and left
Eureka High School before graduating to join the Marine Corps. He was
discharged in 1985 as a sergeant; he said he received a medical discharge
because of mental problems, Jager said.
``He couldn't really give any reason'' for killing the victims, Jager said.
``He's got a lot of problems in his background in relationships with women,
feelings of rejection, especially his wife. But he couldn't give any reason.''

A trucker's `last straw'
BY TRACY SEIPEL
Mercury News Staff Writer
EUREKA -- The Arcata long-haul trucker authorities believe is a serial killer
told authorities here that he turned himself in partially to prevent himself
from killing his wife and leaving his young son an orphan.
Wayne Adam Ford, 36, also told Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies and the
county coroner that he had made peace with God and, together with information
about his various crimes, wanted to bring some closure to the families of the
victims he had killed and dismembered.
``He struck me as being very remorseful and very ashamed of what he had done,
which struck me as being very different from other homicide suspects I have
interviewed,'' said Frank Jager, Humboldt County Coroner. ``I truly think he
truly feels badly about what he has done.''
Ford, charged with homicide of an unidentified woman found near Eureka, pleaded
not guilty and remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail in Humboldt County
Jail
Jager participated in the interview last week with Ford to question him about a
torso found in October 1997 in nearby Ryan Slough and the disappearance of a
17-year-old Eureka resident who disappeared a month later.
Though Ford did not specifically explain why he had allegedly killed at least
four women during his travels across the state, including one female hitchhiker
he picked up in downtown Eureka last fall, he told authorities he has ``a lot
of animosity because of things that have happened in life with women,'' Jager
said.
Divorce last straw
The situation with his ex-wife since their divorce 1 1/2 years ago was ``kind
of the last straw for him,'' said Jager. Ford had complained to friends and
relatives that his ex-wife, who lives in Las Vegas, would not let him visit his
3-year-old son. Though he had visitation rights, Ford told investigators, she
had allegedly interfered with those visits, Jager said.
``His anger toward her was growing every day, and he felt if he didn't turn
himself in, he might end up taking some of his anger out on her, which would
leave his son an orphan,'' said Jager. ``He was concerned about his son.''
Jager said he got the impression Ford would harm his ex-wife ``fairly soon,
probably the same way he'd done it to the others.''
The coroner said the trucker broke down into tears several times during a
three-hour interview.
Ford said he was not involved with the teen's disappearance, but admitted to
other crimes in detail.
Among other revelations: Ford told authorities he had picked up a young woman
who was hitchhiking in Eureka in October 1997 near midnight and took her to
nearby Clam Beach, in the north part of town, where at some point, the couple
had sex. He said he strangled the woman with his bare hands, and later cut the
woman's body into several pieces, severing her breasts.
Ford told investigators he threw the torso into Ryan's slough, and buried parts
of the woman's arms, legs and head in the bank of Mad River, near his silver
Airstream trailer in the Town and Country Trailer Park in Arcata.
``He wanted to dispose of any parts that might be identifiable,'' Jager said.
Investigators now believe an arm from that hitchhiker was carried by the river
current into the ocean and washed up on Clam Beach, where it was found last
year.
But some of the parts he kept in his trailer freezer, he told them. Ford had
recently removed five other pieces from that woman's body from the freezer and
buried them in a plastic bag at the foot of a tree near a makeshift campground
he recently established in nearby Trinidad.
``When we got the parts, they had thawed out but they were not decomposed,''
Jager said.
Campsite body parts
Those body parts, along with knives, saws, a rifle, clothes and a backpack have
been recovered from the campsite, Jager said.
``He told us he liked to go there for some quiet time,'' said Jager of the
campsite. Jager did not know if any of the articles belonged to victims.
Jager said Ford did not say why he had kept the body parts, but told them he
planned to dispose of them.
``I see a person who wanted to be meticulous in trying to get rid of
everything. He didn't want to be caught,'' said Jager. ``In fact, he made a
statement that he would never have been found out'' if he hadn't confessed,
Jager said.
The coroner noted that the body parts were not mutilated, but were cut so
precisely that before Ford had turned himself in, Jager wondered whether the
killer had any medical background. To their knowledge, Ford did not. He said he
did not believe the amputations were performed on a living person.
Criminologist Mike Rustigan, who teaches at San Francisco State University and
has consulted on a number of serial killing cases, said Ford appears to be a
classic sexual sadist.
``The saving of body parts is not unique to Wayne Ford,'' he said. ``It's
almost as creepy as the (Jeffrey) Dahmer case, but the Dahmer case was of
course the most macabre because he was a cannibal.''
Authorities have confiscated Ford's truck-driving logs determine if they can
link him to other victims killed in a similar fashion. The logs are being
matched to the days and areas he traveled around California and Nevada for the
trucking company, Jager said. The logs were very well-kept until recently, when
Ford told them he was having ``a difficult time doing analytical functions,
remembering addresses, that sort of thing.''
Dates, locations, victims
Authorities said Ford has assisted San Bernardino County and Kern County
authorities regarding dates and locations of other victims and other body
parts.
Although Ford confessed to four killings, other law enforcement agencies across
the West, including Oakland and Napa are checking their unsolved murder files.
Jager said Ford told them he strangled women by accident, something Jager said
he would not find plausible given the multiple victims.
Jager said Ford told them he had problems with women and life. He told
investigators that he had entered the Marines just before his 18th birthday,
where he later became an instructor in chemical and biological warfare. He said
he was given a medical discharge after six years because of mental problems.
A Marine Corps sticker is on the back bumper of his light blue Jeep parked in
the trailer park where he lived until his arrest.
He said he later had a girlfriend, but she left him. He eventually met his
wife, who divorced him. Life then apparently started falling apart.
Jager said Ford told his older brother, who had accompanied him to the
sheriff's department Tuesday night, that he had ``done something very bad and
had to turn himself in,.'' But both the coroner and investigators said they do
not believe the brother knew the severity of his sibling's crimes, and that the
brother appeared ``genuinely shocked,'' when Ford showed them the severed
breast wrapped in plastic in his coat pocket.
Jager, who has been in law enforcement in Humboldt County since 1971, called
the killings a tragedy. ``It's pretty terrible to see something like this. We
do not have this kind of thing happening in Humboldt County very often.''

I haven't seen anything in print about it, but I'd speculate that
there's something sexual about those parts of a woman's body. I would
guess that he has a fetish about feet and what could be more feminine
than breasts?
Just my speculation, of course.

Agreed. And turning himself in because god told him to is even further
evidence of his total insanity.

Maybe she was just too heavy to dispose of in one piece. Was she a size 6 or
16?
Thanks for another excellent update.

Hello Reets,
That is absolutely correct. ANY human being on planet earth, criminal or not,
who believes in the existence of god, is suffering from genuine mental illness.
Believing that god talks to you or tells you what to do in life, simply
demonstrates a HIGHER level of mental illness.

I have no idea why he chose to keep these specific body parts in his freezer.
Actually, I don't recall reading any article that CONFIRMED that he kept the
feet in the freezer, although the above quoted article would seem to imply
that, based upon the description of how the other body parts were dumped or
buried.

Only Wayne knows the answer to that question.

I doubt that. It's not hard to carry even a 150 pound woman to a chosen dump
site, and Wayne is a decently large and strong man. I think it is far more
likely that Wayne undertook the dismemberments for personal pleasure and
tactical body disposal purposes, rather than due to any weight of the gal(s).

Well, at the URL that I gave in one of my posts, facial photos of two of the
victims were displayed. They did not seem to be especially overweight.
>Thanks for another excellent update.
My pleasure. Too bad that I have an EXTREMELY busy Tuesday ahead of me, with
about 10 hours worth of outdoor/public tasks and chores, and will only be able
to make perhaps two new TC posts this morning, and another 2 posts later this
afternoon/evening.
Take care, JOE
