This poor lady has been through hell.
The picture in the Charlotte, NC. Observer shows the poor lady.
She had given an interview to the Weekly World News and said she had
been beaten at the prison. She also told of how a prison guard had sex
with her 4 times.
The investigators for the state of SC believe her claim that was
used for sex by the prison guard, but for some reason they don't
believe her allegation of being beaten. How could they make that
determination. Maybe the guard first beat her to 'bend her to his
will', and then experienced her sex. It could also be he is one of
those weirdos that loves to have a little violence with sex.

S.C. prison guard fired after admitting sex with Smith

By AMY GEIER
Associated Press

COLUMBIA -- The S.C. Senate plans to hold public hearings to investigate
the Corrections Department after a male state prison guard was fired for
having sex with prisoner Susan Smith, who is serving a life sentence for
drowning her two young sons in a Union County, S.C., lake.

State Sen. David Thomas on Thursday called for a public hearing on the
issue of guards and sex in prisons.

"We're going to turn up the heat on the Department of Corrections,"
Thomas said Thursday.

During an investigation of a tabloid report that Smith had been beaten
in prison, the 29-year-old inmate told investigators about four sexual
encounters with Lt. Houston Cagle, 50, earlier this year, Corrections
Department spokesman John Barkley said.

Cagle confirmed what happened when he was confronted with the
allegations, Barkley said. Cagle was removed from the department's
payroll Wednesday and fired Thursday, Barkley said.

Criminal charges had not been filed against Cagle as of late Thursday,
but having sex with an inmate is a felony. Cagle had worked for the
Corrections Department since 1987. He began working at the Women's
Correctional Institution in December 1996, Barkley said.

"This behavior is inappropriate, unacceptable and illegal," Corrections
Department Director Doug Catoe said. "It is my intent as director to see
that he is no longer employed by the department."

Catoe said the department is pursuing criminal prosecution. If charged
and convicted, Cagle could face a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

Officials still are investigating what happened in the Smith case,
Barkley said. No action has yet been taken against Smith, he said,
although she could lose some of her privileges.

Investigators do not know who initiated the relationship or why it
ended, Catoe said. They do think this is the only relationship she has
had with any officer or inmate at the prison.

Although there is nothing to indicate that Smith was forced to have sex
with Cagle, the relationship was a violation of authority, Catoe said.
Prison employees are fully trained on appropriate contact with
prisoners.

Does it prove she wasn't beaten?

Sorry, I had misunderstood your first statement. I thought you were
talking about the sexual encounters. No, it doesn't prove she wasn't
beaten.
