Bodies Found Burning Are Three Males
POSTED: 8:18 am CDT May 4, 2005
UPDATED: 5:39 pm CDT May 4, 2005
OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha police are investigating the discovery of three male
bodies in northwest Omaha Wednesday morning, and they are calling the
investigation a triple homicide.
The bodies were found near 60th and State streets, east of 60th Street and
between State and Rainwood Road. Dispatchers received a call about a brush
fire at about 5:45 a.m. The call came from a passer-by on a cell phone. When
police arrived, they found three bodies back in an area of heavy brush about
25 feet off of 60th Street. The bodies were on fire.
The area marked off as a crime scene is fairly large. No public access is
allowed in the area.
Arson and homicide detectives are at the scene. The Omaha police helicopter
was used above the crime scene Wednesday morning.
Police said Wednesday afternoon that a cause of death had not been
determined and investigators could not tell whether the bodies had been
killed there or taken there after the deaths. Investigators said they
believe the bodies were placed in the area of the fire shortly before the
fire was set.
"We're not far enough along in the investigation to determine whether there
are any injuries to the bodies besides the burns," said Capt. Mike Butera,
with Omaha police.
Neighbors in the nearby Raven Oaks neighborhood woke to sirens. Deborah
Murphy said she thought a driver may have collided with a deer.
"I looked out our bedroom window and saw ambulance lights through the
trees," Murphy said.
Soon investigators were on Murphy's doorstep, telling her about their
discovery.
Police have not answered media questions about whether there is need for
neighbors to be concerned. Murphy said that not knowing is frustrating.
"It's very, very strange," she said.
On the north side of the crime scene perimeter, some neighbors have had
trouble getting to and from their homes. Residents said they hope to learn
more from police on how to conduct themselves during the investigation.

Three Bodies Found
Victims all shot in head
The bodies of three men were found burning in the brush near 60th and State
early Wednesday. Several sources tell Channel 6 News that each of the
victims had been shot in the head.
Firefighters were called out to a brush fire at 5:45 Wednesday morning.
When police arrived, they found the bodies in heavy brush, approximately 25
feet from the street.
Police Sergeant Teresa Negron says the deaths are being investigated as
homicides. Arson and homicide investigators were called to the scene.
Two people who live nearby, 65-year-old Vicki Dinsmore and 78-year-old Frank
Rutar, said they heard police sirens Wednesday morning, a rarity in a
neighborhood where occasional traffic accidents typically generate the most
excitement.
"This is really a quiet area," Dinsmore said.
By Wednesday evening, three piles of ashes marked the spots where the bodies
of the men were found. Investigators believe that the killer might have set
them on fire in a wooded area along 60th Street.
Omaha Police Captain Mike Butera says the, "bodies as a result of fire did
sustain some damage. We are investigating the incident as a homicide."
Authorities say that nothing else around the bodies was burned and that
leads them to believe the bodies were placed where they were found close to
the time the fire was set.
Captain Butera says, "We are not far enough along in the investigation to
determine if this is the primary scene where men were killed or whether the
bodies were dumped here."
Vern Kessler says he's lived in the neighborhood for 20 years. He likes it
because it's somewhat rural. There are just six homes in the immediate area.
"It's beautiful out here," he says. "Too bad it happened all the way
around."
Kessler says he and his neighbors have always cherished the woods out their
front door.
Alex McCoy says, "I've gone mushroom hunting up there before with my kids.
It's a little scary now to think what they found up there today."
Approximately 13 hours after a passerby first spotted the fires, Omaha
police wrapped up their investigation at the scene and two vans from the
coroner's office hauled the bodies away.
The victims were not identified Wednesday.
Authorities want to hear from anyone with information on the case or
information on any missing man.

That's what it looks like to me. This wasn't just murder; it
appears to be an execution.
Kind regards,

Yes, it does.
This might have something to do with the current "lock up
the cold medicines" movement. Iowa (just across the river
from Omaha) recently enacted such a measure and
Nebraska is dragging their feet.
Now we have interstate trafficking in Sudafed?
