Here is an interesting human interest news story, that I am only posting
because it provides info on a rather obscure and little mentioned Russian
serial killer/rapist of boys named Igor Irtyshov.
Back in September of 1994, Igor armed himself with a SHARP HOOK and literally
DISEMBOWELED an 8 year old boy named Konstantin Kouzmine, inside of an
ELEVATOR, in St. Petersburg, Russia! Konstantin did SURVIVE the vicious attack.
His Daddy was in the USA, looking for a job, at the time of this incident.
Doctors in the USA agreed to treat the boy, who was transported from Russia to
the USA for emergency surgery just 10 days after the attack by Igor. Since
then, our disembowelling victim has undergone more than 20 surgeries, and
yesterday he received a small bowel transplant, and appears to be hanging in
there and might have his quality of life improved if this bowel transplant is
accepted by his body.
That's all well and good, but I am MUCH more interested in our serial
killer/disemboweler of young boys, Igor Irtyshov. He certainly has NOT received
very much media attention. We learn below that after attacking and
disembowelling Konstantin with his hook weapon, Igor did manage to successfully
flee the scene. He was arrested a year or so later, and charged with committing
a whole SERIES of rapes and murders of young boys, although it's unclear how
many victims he claimed. Put on trial, Igor was found guilty and sentenced to
be legally murdered via the death penalty.
If anyone has detailed info on Igor, please share it with us here at the NG.
I'm a little too busy getting ready for my trip to spend 1-2 hours checking out
all the serial killer web sites to see if there is any detailed coverage of
Igor. I did a quick Altavista search for "Igor Irtyshov" and came up with
NOTHING. Certainly he should be better known than he is, if indeed he serially
killed/raped boys AND used HOOKS to DISEMBOWEL some or all of them.
8 year old Konstantin certainly was lucky to survive the attack, it seems
quite clear that Igor relished killing his victims, and simply failed to follow
through in this case, inflicting a VERY serious but not fatal act of
disembowelment upon the 8 year old, apparently a COMPLETE stranger to him. I
also think it's interesting that the disembowelment occured inside of an
elevator. Truth is, I'm surprised that MORE serial killers do not comit their
attacks inside of elevators. Properly planned out, attacks inside of elevators
can provide a very effective modus operandi, and allow a killer to easily
escape and flee the scene.
Anyway, my interest in Igor is certainly peaked by this news item, and I wish
I knew more about him and his serial crimes.
Take care, JOE

Surgery Helps Russian Attack Victim
By CLAUDIA COATES
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Russian boy has received a small-bowel transplant and was
conscious and talking Tuesday, four years after an attacker disemboweled him.
Konstantin Kouzmine, 12, was ``progressing very well in light of the operation
that he just went through,'' Children's Hospital spokesman Michael B. Laffin
said.
Surgeons performed an 11-hour surgery Sunday on Konstantin, who was 8 when he
was brought to Pittsburgh. Because his small intestine and most of his large
intestine were missing, medical workers have been feeding him with an
intravenous solution the past four years.
A man with a sharp hook attacked Konstantin on an elevator and disemboweled him
in September 1994 in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the time, the boy's father was
in Pittsburgh looking for a job. He contacted Children's Hospital, whose
doctors arranged for Konstantin to come to the United States 10 days after the
attack.
Donations paid for the boy's trip from Russia. He reportedly has had more than
20 operations.
The attacker, Igor Irtyshov, was convicted in June 1996 in a Russian court for
a series of rapes and murders of young boys and sentenced to die. His trial was
reportedly held behind closed doors to protect him from possible revenge by the
victims' families.
The boy and his father, Vladimir, live in Wilkinsburg, a suburb of Pittsburgh.

I realize that your interest in this case more in the disembowel-er than the
disembowel-ee, but if you *should* run across an update, would you be kind
enough to let us know if this boy pulls through?

IF I run across such an update, I will post it. But I very seriously doubt
that the national news wires will provide such an update. Your best bet is
probably to monitor the local Pittsburgh daily online newspaper, over at:
