Classmate's testimony brings Kolb to tears
By Brian Krans, bkrans;@qconline.com

DIXON -- Jurors saw a vulnerable side of Sarah Kolb Friday, as tears
streamed down her face following testimony that made her sound
violent.

The usually stoic teen was consoled by her attorney, Dave Hoffman, as
the Lee County jury left the courtroom on lunch break. Ms. Kolb's
tears came after Tamsen Lacina, 18, blew her a kiss while leaving the
witness stand. Ms. Kolb ducked her head as she walked out of the
courtroom.

The 17-year-old Milan girl is being retried in Dixon on murder and
concealment charges related to the Jan. 21, 2005, strangulation murder
and dismemberment of Adrianne Reynolds, 16, of East Moline.

Ms. Lacina testified about a conversation between her and Ms. Kolb
after work at Showcase Cinemas 53 in Davenport. Ms. Kolb said she got
into a fight with a girl in her car, knocked out four of the girl's
teeth and the girl had spit out blood, Ms. Lacina testified.

"Sarah said she started strangling the girl," Ms. Lacina said.

Ms. Lacina testified the girl, who Ms. Kolb identified only as "Jiffy"
and never by name, ran out of the vehicle to a McDonald’s restaurant.
Cory Gregory, 18, of Moline, was also in the car at the time of the
conversation and also involved in the fight, Ms. Lacina said.

Prosecutors allege both Ms. Kolb and Mr. Gregory killed Ms. Reynolds
in Ms. Kolb's car outside a Taco Bell in Moline during a lunch break
at Black Hawk Outreach Center where the three were students.

Mr. Gregory is scheduled to be tried in May.

Earlier this week, Mr. Hoffman and Judge James Teros argued about
testimony regarding Mr. Gregory's feelings toward Ms. Reynolds. The
judge said only Mr. Gregory could provide an answer. Mr. Hoffman said
he might call Mr. Gregory as a witness when he begins his case.

Rock Island County State's Attorney Jeff Terronez presented 24
witnesses during the first three days of testimony in the trial, which
is expected to continue through next week.

The jury heard testimony about where police found Ms. Reynolds'
dismembered remains at a rural Mercer County farm and Black Hawk State
Historical Site in Rock Island.

This jury, unlike one in Rock Island County that couldn't reach a
verdict in Ms. Kolb's November trial, learned through testimony that
Mr. Gregory led investigators to the sites.

They also heard of potential motives for the murder, including Ms.
Kolb's jealousy of her friends becoming friends with Ms. Reynolds.

According to testimony, Ms. Kolb introduced her friends to Ms.
Reynolds at a house in Rock Island where Ms. Reynolds allegedly slept
with two boys on separate occasions.

"Sarah had brought Adrianne over to the house to test her," said
Brandon Cummings, who was at the house. "To see if she would be the
type of person to sleep around."

Beginning Tuesday, jurors can expect to hear testimony from Ms. Kolb's
family, including her sister, who said Ms. Kolb had a sexual interest
in Ms. Reynolds.

Before court closed Friday afternoon, Judge Teros read an entry from
Ms. Kolb's journal from an English class at Black Hawk. Before the
alleged murder, Ms. Kolb wrote about "Jiffy" and how she needs to
"back off my Kool-Aid."

"I'll f---ing kill her," the entry ends.

Also a student from Black Hawk Outreach Center, Lisa Rubalcava, 17,
testified that in a class before the lunch break Jan. 21, Ms. Kolb
told her she invited a "kind of new girl" to lunch so they could beat
her up.

Ms. Kolb said, "they were going to take her out to a farm or somewhere
no would could find her and give her an early grave," Ms. Rubacalva
testified. "She said no one would ever see her again."

Ms. Rubacalva said Ms. Kolb also asked "if someone would die if they
got hit with something."

When charging Ms. Kolb in January 2005, prosecutors alleged Ms. Kolb
hit Ms. Reynolds with a stick and strangled her. Friday, information
was presented to the court that showed the crime lab found no blood or
fluids on the stick.

"That means she wasn't hit with the stick," Mr. Hoffman said following
court Friday.

The trial will not be in session on Monday in observance of Lincoln's
Birthday.

Excerpts of additional testimony Friday in Sarah Kolb's murder
retrial:

- Jaque Martinez, testified Ms. Kolb told Ms. Reynolds she was going
to kill her on the day of the alleged murder. The three were at the
Black Hawk Outreach Center.

- Korey Allison, said Ms. Kolb introduced him to Ms. Reynolds at a
house in Rock Island shortly before he had sex with Ms. Reynolds. He
called it "an opportunity I didn't expect."

- Doug Lamb, a teacher at Black Hawk, testified to telling Lisa
Rubalcava to tell the police about an alleged conversation where Ms.
Kolb told her she was going to give a girl "an early grave."

- Tanci Jensen, said she took Ms. Kolb's journal from a classroom at
Black Hawk after Ms. Kolb was arrested because "she didn't want her to
get into further trouble."
