Neighbor says Peterson gave different alibi
TOLD POLICE HE WAS FISHING; OTHERS THAT HE WAS GOLFING
By Jessie Seyfer
San Jose Mercury News

One of Scott Peterson's neighbors this afternoon joined a growing number of people who say
Peterson claimed he had been golfing the day his wife disappeared, contradicting what he
told authorities -- that he had been fishing at the Berkeley marina.

Amie Krigbaum, who lives across from the Petersons, testified in Redwood City court that
Peterson knocked on her door the evening of Dec. 24, 2002 and appeared ``distraught.'' He
asked her if she had seen his wife Laci, who was eight months pregnant, and she said no,
Krigbaum testified. When Krigbaum asked where he'd been, he said he was golfing all day.

Peterson now faces double-homicide charges for the deaths of his wife and their unborn
son, and prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty.

Krigbaum also said that although it appeared no one was home at the Petersons' Dec. 24,
she noticed that icicle-style Christmas lights came on late in the afternoon. Laci
Peterson's car was parked in the driveway all day, and Scott Peterson's truck showed up
later, after the Christmas lights went on, she said.

Another of the day's witnesses, Harvey Kemple, also testified that Peterson told him he
had gone golfing Dec. 24. Kemple is married to Laci Peterson's mother's cousin.

Peterson has since backed up his account of going to the Berkeley marina with a receipt
from there, but authorities believe he may have been dumping his pregnant wife's body
there instead of fishing. The golfing alibi has yet to be explained.

Kemple also testified today that Peterson once got more upset over burned barbecue chicken
than he ever got over his wife's disappearance.

``I saw more reaction from him when he burned the chicken than when his wife went
missing,'' he said. ``There was no more emotion than what he showed right now.''

Kemple, a spirited man who often sassed back to defense attorneys, described a July 4,
2002 incident in which Peterson became upset over burning chicken on his barbecue. Kemple
said Peterson slammed the barbecue's lid down and kept making angry comments.

Kemple was suspicious of Peterson after the golfing comment, he said, and decided to
follow him on several occasions. Once, Peterson told volunteers he was going to hang up
fliers, but instead went to the mall and sat in the parking lot for 45 minutes in his car,
Kemple said. On another occasion, Peterson went to the Del Rio Country Club, and country
club employees told Kemple that Peterson had come there several times since Laci Peterson
disappeared.

Yet on cross-examination from defense attorney Pat Harris, Kemple admitted that despite
his suspicions, he didn't mention Peterson's Dec. 24 golfing comment to police until 6 1/2
months later.

Also taking the stand today was Karen Servas, the Petersons' next-door neighbor. Servas
found the Petersons' golden retriever McKenzie wandering in front of their house Dec. 24,
dragging a wet and muddy leash behind him, she said.

Servas put the dog into the Petersons' deserted backyard, and hours later got a call from
Scott Peterson telling her that his wife was missing, she said. Defense attorneys hope to
convince the jury that Laci Peterson was abducted while walking the dog in the
neighborhood that morning.

Laci Peterson's aunt Susan Aquino also briefly took the stand today, and said that on
Christmas Day 2002, she heard two police officers tell Scott Peterson that two witnesses
had seen his wife walking across a bridge in a nearby park. Peterson said, ``That wasn't
Laci; she doesn't go around there,'' Aquino recalled.

The testimony helped prosecutors because it showed Peterson brushed off information he
should ostensibly have been interested in. More prosecution witnesses will take the stand
tomorrow.

***Uh-huh.

I'm beginning to wonder if this ever even happened. This guy doesn't sound
like the type to have held back any information that would have made Scott look
bad.

Servas? She doesn't seem to mention what Scott told her about
where he'd been.

And you know when the The MPD *First* questioned Kemple?

Was it one day after Laci went missing, or was it 6 and a half months later?

Do you know for certain?

I hope you never get on a jury :)

I did the subject line first without reading the article and then read the article,
so I cancelled this one, but I guess it was too late, and reposted.

***Uh-oh. I see you're still smarting over the "slow students" comment.

If you had information like Kemple says he had, don't you think it would be
incumbent on you to let the police know before six months had passed?

Wonder what he told Servas. Golfing or fishing. Or maybe he invented
a completely new story, just for her.

I don't smart over anything on Usenet, sweet cheeks. AOL subcribers are a

I have a feeling you'll find a place within my Bozo Bib real soon.

I see you are still being a smart ass, only you are intelligent, in your own
mind, that is.

Hey Mo! LOL. As time goes on and you get more comfortable here you
will learn two things. 1) Maggie is snobbish, arrogant, annoying, and
a general pain in the ass at times. 2)Maggie is often right on the
money.

I don't think she is as bright as she thinks she is, but she does put
in the research time and seems to have her facts straight the vast
majority of the time. I think she described herself once as a bored
housewife. Maybe ATC is her life, but I have to admit, if she left,
I'd miss her contribution.

Obviouosly the people he lies to aren't worthy of his trust would be
my guess... and everyone knows you shouldn't lie to cops if you don't
want to get burned.

It sounds as if Scot intended to tell people that he was golfing that
day. He told everyone except LE that he was golfing. I wonder if LE
found the marina receipt, or something like that, forcing Scot to tell
them that he'd been at the marina. I wonder if he originally told LE
that he was golfing, then had to change his story and say he'd been
fishing?
