Calling it the “tip of the iceberg,” Passaic County Sheriff Richard
Berdnik announced Tuesday the arrest more than a dozen suspects,
including five minors, in a child pornography sting that spanned eight
towns.

Those charged with possession and distribution of videos and images of
children engaged in sexual acts ranged in age from 16 to 52. They were
accused of trafficking in thousands of images, ranging from infants to
preteens, authorities said.

Berdnik, at a press conference, called the seven-month investigation,
dubbed Operation Minor Traffic, the “first of its kind” in the county.
He described the alleged participation of four 16-year-olds and one
17-year-old in the crimes as “quite troubling.”

Police say the suspects were not linked in a pornography ring but
trafficked the material from their homes individually for their own
gratification rather than for profit.

They did not produce the more than 10,000 seized videos and images,
most of which were likely made in Asia and Europe, said Capt. Robert
Weston, head of the sheriff’s Internet Crime Task Force, which led the
investigation.

He said the material, which he called “quite graphic and quite
disturbing,” showed children with other children and with adults.

Weston did not release details about how the suspects were caught,
saying “it would be contradictory to our advantage to disclose that.”

While similar busts have been made on the state and federal level, the
county broke new ground by investigating child pornography in all its
16 municipalities, according to Weston and Berdnik. More
investigations are likely to follow, they said.

“I’m sure there will be more arrests,” said Berdnik, who was commander
of the Clifton Police Department’s Juvenile Division before becoming
sheriff.

The sweep signaled a countywide rise in online pornography offenses
resulting from greater access to the Internet and in arrests resulting
from better investigative technology, Weston said. He added that while
his team decided to end the investigation after seven months, it could
have continued.

“We stopped because we stopped,” he said. “There comes a point when
you have to have finality.”

Weston said after the press conference that “sometimes (cases) creep
into that personal level. This one does.”

None of the suspects was listed in on sex offender registries.

Two of the suspects, Ronald Fries of Hawthorne and Giovanny Garcia of
Prospect Park have arrest records, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fries had arrests from 1978 through 2011 for drug possession, weapons,
aggravated assault and creating false public alarm.
