Jailer's family claims she's scapegoat in Centobie escape

GADSDEN - An Etowah County jailer's family
members say she didn't help Mario Centobie escape
and she's in custody because the Sheriff's Department
needed someone to blame for the embarrassing
incident.
Jail guard Donna Hawkins is one of two people police
have in custody on charges of assisting in Centobie's
escape from the maximum security jail. Mrs. Hawkins,
44, and former inmate Brent Andre Parris, 23, are
being held on charges of permitting or facilitating an
escape in the first degree. A third person who was
being held was released Sunday without being charged.
Also Sunday, the best tip police have had in their
search for Centobie fell short after helicopters and dogs
scoured an Embry Cross Roads site where two people
reported seeing a man matching the murder suspect's
description head into the woods.
"It was something we thought was going to be good,
but we can't even confirm that it was him," said Etowah
County Sheriff James Hayes.
A truck driver reported seeing a man wearing a cap
and a backpack coming out of a wooded area about
8:30 a.m. Sunday, Hayes said. Later, a resident made a
similar report in the same area. Search dogs initially hit
on a scent and followed it to a barn. They lost it and
never picked it up again, Hayes said.
Centobie, who walked out of Etowah County Jail late
Thursday, was being held on a capital murder charge in
connection with the June killing of a Moody police
officer.
