MONROE -- The sister of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh has been
teaching since August in Union County, school officials said Friday.
Jennifer Hill, who legally changed her last name, teaches seventh-grade
language arts at Weddington Middle School, Superintendent Jerry Thomas
said at a Friday news conference.
Hill revealed her identity to school officials in April, after a tabloid
television crew turned up at the school, Thomas said. Administrators
initially honored Hill's request to keep the information private but went
public in advance of an "Inside Edition" segment on McVeigh's family that
ran Friday amid publicity about the government's delay of McVeigh's
execution.
Thomas said Hill is an exemplary teacher, and the school system is
standing behind her.
"She has done nothing wrong," he said.
Timothy McVeigh is scheduled to die June 11 for the April 1995 bombing
that killed 168 people and injured more than 500.
During his trial, Jennifer McVeigh, then 23, was granted immunity in
return for her testimony. She testified her brother grew increasingly
angry about the 1993 FBI raid at Waco, Texas, started stockpiling
explosives and decided to begin the "action stage." Timothy McVeigh wrote
his sister weeks before the bombing that "something big is going to
happen."
Nobody answered the door at the brick-and-frame ranch where Hill lives in
east Charlotte. Several neighbors said they had not seen her in the last
day or two.
Before joining the Weddington Middle School staff, Hill taught several
months at Coulwood Middle School, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
spokeswoman said.
In Union County, a routine pre-employment background check on Hill turned
up "Jennifer McVeigh" as an alias - and no criminal charges - but school
officials didn't connect her name with Timothy McVeigh's, Thomas said.
After Hill told the Weddington principal she is Timothy McVeigh's sister,
officials told school board members only.
On Friday, Hill talked with colleagues and students about her brother, and
the school sent home a letter to parents.
As the news spread, several parents said they're happy to have Hill at the
school and worry that she is suffering.
Margo Abdallah, whose eighth-grade son has not had Hill as a teacher, said
she supports Hill - but thinks the school should have notified parents
earlier.
"When you hide something, it makes you think, `Well, why are they hiding?
Was there something to hide?'" she said. "But there's nothing to hide."
But parent Debra Craigmile said administrators did the right thing by
keeping the news quiet at first. Craigmile said she would expect
notification if a teacher turned out to be a convicted sex offender, but
didn't expect to be informed of situations like this.
