SC Teen Shoots 4 Family Members in the Head

A young man killed his father, stepmother and two siblings. According to the
police report, the 18-year-old shot his relatives inside a suburban South
Carolina house where they were living together.

The young killer was identified as Nathaniel Dickson. Police officers put
him under arrest at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at a home in Belton about 20
miles from the crime scene, according to Anderson County Sheriff's
spokeswoman Susann Griffin.

Dickson is facing four counts of murder.

A 911 call at about 9:30 a.m. sent paramedics at the house where the crime
took place. When arriving at the scene, the medical staff found the father
dead in the yard. The other three victims were found inside the house. All
of them were shot in the head.

The youngest victim was the Dickson's 14-year-old little brother. It seems
he was shot in the head as he was trying to hide behind the clothes dryer.

Police said investigators couldn't determine what drove Dickson to kill his
relatives, Griffin said.

Police released the names and age of the victims: Samuel Andrew Dickson Jr.,
46 (father), Martiza Hurtado Dickson, 46 (stepmother), Melissa Giliam
Salazar, 19 (stepsister) and his 14-year-old brother, Taylor Alex Dickson.

According to Melissa Funk, a neighbor of the Dicksons, Nathaniel had moved
out of the house after graduation a year ago, but had recently moved back
in.

This is another common theme. Young men - teens mostly - who 'go off' and
annihilate their entire families (or whoever's avail at the time). Such
rage. Where does it come from? C'mon, some posters here surely have some
ideas?

Memorial fund set up for slain father, son

By E. Richard Walton
STAFF WRITER

A memorial fund has been set up for two of four members of the Dickson
family, all of whom were slain in their home just outside of Easley more
than a week ago, a spokeswoman said.

The idea of something to remember the slain student and his dad is still
being discussed, Jane Harrison, the spokeswoman for the Anderson District 1.

"It's the Andy and Taylor Dickson Memorial Fund" that has been set up at
Wren Middle School, where Taylor went to school and played on the baseball
team, she said. "It's a memorial."

How the money will be used has not been decided, she said.

"What will we do with it will be decided between the school and the family,"
Harrison said. She provided no timeline as when the decision might be made
about what form the memorial would take.

Not only did Taylor love baseball, but his dad was a baseball coach.

Both the school district, its leaders and Anderson County Sheriff's deputies
said it had been a tough week.

Harrison said the district's senior managers had been fielding calls, mostly
from reporters seeking information, all week.

She said there were extra counselors available for the students at Wren
Middle School. "Middle schoolers have it tough normally even without
something like this," she said, referring to the 4 deaths.

Sheriff David Crenshaw and his staff, including spokeswoman, Susann Griffin,
said they had a tough week, too. Things only got worse with another
homicide, the eighth, in Anderson County on Saturday. It was the second
consecutive Saturday, that murder investigators, Crenshaw and Griffin, have
worked.

Last weekend, Samuel Andrew "Andy" Dickson, 46, and his son, Taylor Alex
Dickson, 14, were killed along with Dickson's wife, Maritza Hurtado, 46, and
her daughter, Melissa Jiliam Salazar, 19, were died in their home at 153
Pine Lake Drive.

Dickson's son, Nathaniel, 19, was charged with killing all four family
members. He is being held in the Anderson County Detention Center.

The Dicksons were laid to rest Friday, she said.

Funeral arrangements for Hurtado and Salazar, who are from Columbia, were
not known, the spokeswoman said. Harrison said she speculated that their
funerals may be delayed in order to allow family members to travel to the
Upstate from South America.

Checks can be sent to Wren Middle, which is 1010 Wren School Road, Piedmont,
S.C, 29673, she said.

School officials said there have been counselors at the schools are week to
held the kids - especially the middle schoolers - handle the tragedy.

Both Nathan Dickson and Jil Salazar, her stepbrother, graduated from Wren
High School in 2007, Harrison said.

Local comment:

Maybe they can set up some type of organization that has therapists
available where unsuspecting parents could go to be trained on how to
possibly recognize the signs that their very own children are plotting to
murder them and their siblings.

Nathan is lacking a conscience and a heart. The story told by Nathan's
friend is chilling. All Nathan wanted to do was what he wanted to do like he
was still a younger teenager. He wanted no responsibility ....only fun and
games and imo no limitations placed on him no matter if he was still being
financially supported by the very people he slaughtered.

Sounds to me like perhaps a bit of jealousy is in play here.

What "story told by Nathan's friend is chilling," I wonder? I find this sort
of crime understandable - kinda, maybe - IF there've been years and years of
physical and emotional abuse from a parent - IOW, if unbearable pressure was
brought to bear... But otherwise, a child just 'going off' and killing
everyone - what's up with that?

I looked a bit to try and find the *story* referred to. Couldn't find it at
the time. I surmised that the friends referenced about Nathan wanting 'no
responsibility, play games, no limitations, etc.' in that he wanted to live
the life of his younger brother and step-sister, both still in school IIRC.
That's why I said it sounded like perhaps he was jealous of the younger
brother and sister and pissed at his father and step mother because they
wanted him to grow up, get a job, be responsible. Just a guess on my part.

I've never wanted to kill my mother or my sister, but at one time (a
long, LONG time ago) I wanted to kill my father and maternal
grandfather. I understand the rage, though in my situation it didn't
extend to the entire family. I can see how it would, though, if
someone had hurt you and you felt the rest of the family were somehow
"protecting" them by keeping quiet about it. I don't know if that's
the case in this kid's situation, but it's one possibility.

In your teenage years, such rage is magnified 10x. He may have been
abused, but then again he could just be an angry kid with no sense of
perspective. Some people go off over not having been permitted to
borrow the car, or losing a game of monopoly. I wouldn't assume abuse
in any case, though I'd hold it in mind as a tentative explanation
until more information came out.

Interesting question. I probably know more about criminal psychology
than the average person. I don't know why this happens. A few things
I would just say off the top of my head, without any real research
into, or knowledge about, these cases:

1) Not all teen family annihilators are one homogenous group. I'm
pretty sure they kill for different reasons.

2) Where there's no abuse (either from parents or *others*), no severe
mental illness (like schizophrenia or depression), then you are
probably dealing with teen-age narcissist-sociopaths. That is,
teen-agers with a fully developed personality disorder such as
anti-social or narcissistic. If narcissistic, then accompanied by a
malevolent, amoral attitude (not all narcissists are amoral).
Unfortunately, psych professionals are not allowed to diagnose
anti-social or narcissistic personality disorder in teen-agers,
although the reality is that people develop their personalities at
vastly different paces and some teenagers do have fully developed
personality disorders.

3) Narcissist-sociopaths often don't like their parents. Just don't
like them, nothing much more than that. They want special people, fun
people, beautiful people, rich people. Their parents are often too
ordinary for them. They can easily victimize, even kill, people they
don't like because they don't respect morality, don't empathize and
have an irrational contempt for most other people.

4) Narcissist-sociopaths also have big problems with authority
figures, like fathers. They really chafe at any kind of discipline
and resent their parents' attempts to teach, or enforce, morality in
them.

5) Narcissist-sociopaths aspire to dominance. They can't stand to be
"dominated" by their parents; they often want to dominate their
parents.

6) Narcissist-sociopaths have an attitude that other people are "human
vending machines," there to give them whatever they want. If mother
and father don't give youngster what he wants, youngster may kick the
vending machine. If youngster still doesn't get what he wants, he or
she may destroy the vending machine.

7) People at that age have a biological sense of independence from
their parents. The age-21 thing is a recent idea. As recently as
the 19th century, women and men married, left home, entered into
"adulthood" as early as 13, 14, 15. So, biologically, they want to
leave the nest, but societally they are not able to.

8) People at that age also have a lot of hormonal things going on. In
males, there is increased testosterone. There are increased stresses,
including the looming stress of having to go out on their own and
forge a life for themselves. Add all these biological things in with
anti-social or narcissistic personality disorder, poor impulse-control
or just a poorly developed sense of morality, and some sort of
violent eruption often happens.
