MASON, Ohio -- Two former Mason High School students took the stand
Monday to give details of what they claim were sexual encounters with
one of their teachers.

Stacy Schuler, a former physical education teacher and trainer, is
charged with 16 counts of sexual battery and three counts of providing
alcohol to minors. She has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

In opening statements, prosecutors laid out the five incidents for
which Schuler is charged, which ranged from August to December of
2010. In each instance, prosecutors said Schuler had sex with at least
two students each time.

Defense attorneys argued that Schuler was suffering from multiple
psychological issues including mania, post-traumatic stress disorder
and bipolar disorder. They said Schuler has no memory of the incidents
in question, and painted her as a teacher who counseled students on
drug abuse and went out of her way to help her pupils.

The first witness called to the stand, whom WLWT is identifying only
as RS to protect his identity, testified that he and a friend had sex
with Schuler on two different occasions in August and September of
2010.

RS testified that he went to Schuler's home for the first time --
after a football scrimmage with Springboro High School -- to get
Vicodin for his injured ankle. RS testified that Schuler gave RS and
his friend, whom WLWT is identifying only as EK, hints about her
address by telling them that it was the number of EK's jersey and the
original ingredient for making roads: cobblestone.

Asked whether RS thought the hints meant she wanted them to come over,
he replied, "Yes, we believed that she wanted us to come over."

RS said he looked Schuler up on Google afterward to verify her
address, then began texting her to let her know when they were coming
over.

Once RS and EK arrived at the home, RS said Schuler provided the teens
with alcohol. Both were only 17 years old at the time. RS also
testified that the three of them smoked marijuana at Schuler's home.
RS said Schuler told them it was her first time smoking marijuana.

RS then described how the teens ended up in bed with hair, taking
turns having sex with her in graphic detail.

Following the encounter, RS told Schuler that he wanted to make it a
tradition to go to her house after every game.

RS testified that he and EK returned to her house the following week
and engaged in similar sexual activity as the week prior.

During cross examination, attorney Charlie Rittgers Jr. questioned RS
about whether he had been "working on" Schuler for a long time, a
reference to him courting Schuler. RS denied it.

Rittgers also asked RS about his behavior after he stopped going to
Schuler's house. Rittgers asked if RS had been disrespectful to
Schuler in class.

"Did you cuss at Ms. Schuler in class?" Rittgers asked.

"Yes," RS replied.

Rittgers continued by saying that wasn't the only time RS had
disrespected Schuler.

"You didn't tell her that I'll tell everyone about what happened
unless you give me an A?" Rittgers asked.

RS said no, but admitted that he had told others about his encounters
with Schuler.

EK took the stand after RS was finished being questioned. EK told the
same story about the two sexual encounters he and RS had with Schuler.

EK also talked about three more sexual encounters, with three other
students, in which he was present and participated in sex acts with
Schuler. EK admitted being high on marijuana during all of the
encounters, but said that it did not impair his memory of the events.

During the prosecution's questioning, EK said that Schuler was
participatory in all of the sex acts and never indicated that she
didn't want to take part or stop.

He said that after RS stopped coming with him to Schuler's house, he
invited other friends and had to cajole Schuler into agreeing to let
them come over. EK testified that she was "iffy about the whole
situation."

But EK said Schuler agreed, on three different occasions, to allow
friends of his to come over. He also testified that he witnessed
Schuler have sex with one of the teens, and that he saw the other two
go into the bedroom with her, but he was not present.

During cross-examination, Rittgers went back to a familiar theme of
the defense: whether Schuler's behavior at certain times was weird.

"The fact that all three of you are in the bed having sexual
relations, that's weird?" Rittgers asked.

He also questioned whether it was normal for Schuler to laugh during
sex, which EK admitted she did on a couple occasions. But EK played it
off as not that strange.

"She snickered when RS didn't know how to put the condom on," EK said.

Rittgers also touched back on whether RS was "working on" Schuler.

During EK's testimony, he told Rittgers that he wasn't aware of it.
But Rittgers referred to EK's interview with investigators in which he
said, "RS was working for a long time to get to (Schuler)."

Rittgers also exposed a rift between RS and EK. EK admitted that he
was upset that RS had begun telling people about the sexual encounters
and even wanted to fight RS over.

EK also acknowledged that he knew if RS or he said anything, Schuler's
career would be over. But he denied ever using that against her.

"Did you ever hold it over her, threaten with telling?" asked
prosecutor Teresa Hiett.

"No," replied EK.

Prosecutors said they have 10 more witnesses to call. Testimony is
scheduled to resume at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
