Teen-Ager Held in Killing of a Girl, 16
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
IRVINGTON, N.J. -- A Newark teen-ager has been arrested in the shooting
death of the 16-year-old Irvington girl with whom he had two children.
The shooting occurred four days after she told the police he had
kidnapped and raped her, the police said.
Al-Laquan Jackson, 18, of 284 Eighth Street in Newark, was arrested on
Thursday night in the home of a relative in Newark, where he was found
hiding under a mattress in a child's bedroom, said Robert K. Rankin,
director of the Irvington Police Department.

Jackson was charged with murder, felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated
assault, burglary and weapons offenses in State Superior Court in Newark
this afternoon, said Charlotte Smith, a spokeswoman for the Essex County
Prosecutor's office. Judge Harold Fullilove set bail at $500,000.

Around 4:30 P.M. on Wednesday, Rankin said, Jackson drove to the home of
the victim, Shavone Young, at 48 Highland Terrace in Irvington, forced
his way into the apartment by forcing a door that had been secured by a
chain lock, shot her five times, and fled. Rankin said she may have been
trying to call the police as Jackson broke in.

"It appears that he made a forced entry into the front door, she tried
to use the telephone, and it appears she tried to get away from the
individual when the shots were fired," Rankin said.

Jackson and Ms. Young's two sons, Stephen, 2, and Suquan, 1, were in the
apartment when the shooting occurred, Rankin said. Neither boy was
harmed.

Ms. Young's mother, Rhonda, and her brother, Tashon, with whom she
shared the downstairs apartment of the two-family house, were not home
at the time of the shooting. Rankin said that an upstairs neighbor
called the police.

Ms. Young was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she was
pronounced dead, said Rogers Ramsey, a hospital spokesman. Ramsey said
she had wounds to the head, stomach and both hands.

Rankin said the police had recovered a gun believed to be the murder
weapon.

Ms. Young had apparently tried to break off her relationship with
Jackson two weeks ago, he added. On Oct. 16, four days before the
shooting, Rankin said, Ms. Young went to police headquarters in
Irvington to report that Jackson had gone to her house with a gun,
forced her into his black 1989 Hyundai sedan, driven to Weequahic Park
in Newark, and raped her. She obtained a restraining order, Rankin said,
and the police obtained a warrant for his arrest.

"We knew quite a lot about him; we just couldn't find him," Rankin said.

He said Jackson might also be charged with sexual assault.

Rankin said that Ms. Young had dropped out of Irvington High School, but
that she had recently applied to the evening program there. He said
Jackson had been working as a machine operator at Berliss Bearings in
Livingston, N.J. A person who answered the phone there this afternoon
said that no one was available to comment.

Hmmmm . . . 16 minus 2 years, nine months equals . . .

Well, tragic any way you look at it, I guess. -Dave
