Wheelie Bin Girls Detained For 'Wicked' Murder
From the Press Association
Tuesday July 27, 1999 9:12 pm

Two schoolgirls have been ordered to be detained at Her Majesty's
Pleasure after being convicted of the "unspeakably wicked" murder of a
71-year-old widow.

A jury at Manchester Crown Court took four hours to find the
15-year-olds guilty of killing Lily Lilley then dumping her body in a
wheelie bin and abandoning it in a canal.

The girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wept uncontrollably in
court when the verdict was given. After a brief adjournment for them to
compose themselves, Mr Justice Sachs passing sentence said: "You have
both been convicted of an act of unbelievable cruelty.

"Two young girls for totally pathetic reasons destroyed a frail old lady
in order to get her house. What you did was unspeakably wicked.

"You have not shown the slightest trace of remorse or regret. You are
both hard young women who have committed a terrible crime which almost
defies belief by right-thinking people. Your only mitigation are your
ages. You are both 15."

Detectives with Greater Manchester Police are still baffled as to what
drove the girls to commit such a violent act. Det Supt Roy Rainford
said: "They quite calmly, cooly and cynically took over the house of an
extremely vulnerable, pleasant, lonely old lady who welcomed in company,
including children.

"Her reward for that was to have her property stolen and herself
attacked and murdered. We don't know if they did it just for kicks -
there is no rhyme nor reason to it."

During the six-week trial the jury heard that the girls befriended Mrs
Lilley then murdered her at her home in West Street, Failsworth. They
wound a bandage around her face so tightly that she choked on her false
teeth.

The girls then slashed her legs with a blunt knife and forced her
fragile eight-stone body into a wheelie-bin which they pushed through
the streets before dumping it into the Rochdale canal.

The girls then made Mrs Lilley's house their own, using her telephone to
make 258 calls. They even wrote their names on the walls and carved them
into the furniture. The hearing was adjourned for 24 hours while the
judge considers lifting a ban on identifying the girls.

Judge delays naming young killers

A judge has lifted restrictions on naming two schoolgirl killers - but the
media must wait until Friday to allow any appeal.

At Manchester Crown Court, Mr Justice Sachs lifted the ban but gave the
defence until 1630 BST on Friday to appeal to the Divisional Court.

On Tuesday, the 15-year-olds were convicted of murdering 71-year-old Lily
Lilley, then dumping her body in a wheelie bin and abandoning it in a canal.

The judge said the crime was "unspeakably wicked" as he ordered the girls to
be detained at Her Majesty's Pleasure.

Oy! Loser!

It was posted twice due to the crap service I'm getting from Virgin at the
moment!
Nothing more!

Terence P Higgins once again tries to instigate a flame war because he's bored
and has neither the brains to communicate intellectually on a level playing
field or the wit to really make me give a damn!

ciao
