A construction worker that had been fired from his job for repeated
absences shot his boss in the parking deck of Nordstroms in Perimeter
Mall in Atlanta, Georgia this afternoon. His boss is in critical
condition at Crawford Long Hospital. This is the second shooting at the
mall-about 5-6 years ago, a youth opened fire inside the Food Court in
front of Taco Bell and shot a man dead.

That shooter was no youth. He was in his mid-forties. He was psychotic. He
thought he had a microchip in his stomach that was mind-controlling him, by
transmitting the thoughts of some people he used to know years ago back in
California.

I forget his name, but I remember the case, because I was at Perimeter Mall
that day.

Hello Sondra,

He was 31 years old, I'm fairly certain.

He was definately one of our more colorful shooting rampagers. Although he
only killed one person, wounded four others. Just HOURS after he was released
from a mental hospital, he went to a pawnshop and bought the .38 caliber
revolver that he used in his shooting spree. He was smart enough to also buy
hollowpoint bullets. After he bought the gun, he bought a very nice gray
business suit. Then he set off for the mall and his shooting spree. He was
released from the mental hospital on a Monday. Bought his gun on that same
Monday. Not sure when he bought the suit, but he committed his shooting rampage
the very next day, a Tuesday. Inside of his pocket arresting police found a
neatly folded letter from the mental hospital, stating that he had been
released on the previous day.

Wow, it's a SMALL world, huh?? :) Glad you were not in his line of fire. He
did his rampage at about 12 noon, in the food court area. Bain's Deli, Taco
Bell, and Wendy's were the epicenter of the rampage.

Our gunman's name was James Calvin Brady. I wonder how he's doing these days?
This rampage occured in 1990, 7 long years ago. Time flies when you're alive!
:)

Take care, JOE

JOE's comments regarding:
[Perimeter Mall shooting in 1990]

I was working at 41 Perimeter Center, the office park across the street
from the Mall in a Master Charge and Visa collections office that has
since closed. Funny thing about that day was that our computers went
down, right before lunch and our managers told us to stay put untill
they decided what to do. Several of us collectors talked about going to
Taco Bell and Wendy's that day. When management decided to let us head
for the exits as the computers just were not coming back up anytime
soon, someone ran into our office and yelled that someone had been shot
dead at the Mall. We in our unit decided to stick around, and were
worried sick as our sweet boss had gone to the Mall to pick up a few
items from the stores there. When she walked in the door we all gave her
a round of applause, and she could not figure out why all of us were so
upset! She had not even heard of the shooting untill she came back to
the office!

<treatment of Perimeter Mall

There was some talk down here in Atlanta of Charter-Peachford Hospital
being sued by the widow of the person James shot. Wonder what ever
happened to that case?

I was there that day. It was a few months before my 20th birthday. I was at the mall picking up my eyeglasses. They weren't ready so I started to wander down to the food court. All of a sudden, ladies with shopping bags were running toward me. They went into the Macy's and they shut the doors. Being curious (and dumb), I walked down to the Food Court. Most of it took place in front of the Taco Bell. I vividly remember stepping over a gentleman who seemed as if he were deceased. I was trying to get to a payphone to call my mom who knew I was there. I didn't want her to hear it from someone else. It was a scary day!

Smiling Gunman Opens Fire in Mall; Had Been in Mental Hospital
JOAN KIRCHNER
April 25, 1990
ATLANTA (AP) _ A smiling gunman who killed one person and wounded four at a suburban shopping mall had been released 36 hours earlier from a mental hospital where he had been listed as having homicidal tendencies, police say.

The man, wearing a business suit, fired into a lunch hour crowd Tuesday before he calmly tossed the .38-caliber revolver into a trash can and surrendered, apparently at the urging of an elderly man, authorities said.

“You don’t know what all these people have done to me,” James Calvin Brady, 31, was said by authorities to have muttterd as he was led away.

He was charged with murder and four counts of aggravated assault and jailed without bail. Two of the wounded were listed in critical condition.

During questioning, Brady talked of God and a “mechanical device” inside him that controls his actions, police said. “He’s suffering from hallucinations. He was probably having one when he fired,” said Col. M.F. Ferguson.

A document found in Brady’s pocket said he was released Monday from Georgia Regional Hospital in Atlanta. He was admitted to the state hospital April 13, but the document did not say why he was released, Ferguson said.

Gov. Joe Frank Harris said today that the reason for Brady’s release was under investigation, but it was not due to overcrowding at the mental hospital.

The state is “sincere in trying ... to do everything that we can to prevent something like this from happening,” Harris added. “In this case, I think it was being done.”

The document “said he had homicidal and suicidal tendencies, and suffered from delusions,” Ferguson said. Brady “can be hostile, threatening, and has a history of alcohol abuse,” the colonel quoted it as saying.

Marchant Roach, spokesman for the state Department of Human Resources, which runs the state hospitals, said the department would not comment on any patient.

Officers said Brady bought the snub-nosed revolver and 12 rounds of hollow- point ammunition, a type designed to expand on impact and cause especially severe wounds, for $129 at a pawn shop in Atlanta on Monday.

“How did he get the gun? Why did he get the gun?” Detective Lt. Rodney Maddox said. “We don’t have a good answer to that and may never know why.”

Georgia law does not restrict the sale of handguns or rifles but requires a license for anyone who carries a concealable weapon. Such a license cannot be obtained within five years of release from a psychiatric hospital.

Once inside the mall’s food court, Brady appeared to fire at random, police and witnesses said.

“He looked like a businessman with his left hand in his pants pocket,” said Carol Gravdahl, a store manager at Perimeter Mall, a few miles north of the city. “His right arm was straight out with a pistol, shooting it off randomly. He was coming around with it until I guess he emptied it - and he was smiling.”

After firing six shots, Bradhy attempted to reload, but an elderly man apparently talked him out of it, police said.

“There may be a hero in this thing,” Ferguson said. “We still don’t know who he is, but we’d sure like to talk to him. We’d like to know what he said to him.”

Michael Gregory Musick, 24, of suburban Norcross, was shot in the chest and died at Northside Hospital, police said.

Craig E. Bruno, 23, of Roswell, was shot in the abdomen and was listed in stable condition today. Lucille Hughey, 74, of Decatur, was wounded in the side and was listed in critical but stable condition after surgery. Judy Shell, 53, of Roswell, was shot in the legs and listed in stable condition.

James McDonald, 30, of Alpharetta, was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to the ankle and was released.

Rambling, disjointed notes found in an Atlanta apartment from which Brady was evicted Tuesday morning said he had taken crack and then met two people in California who created a machine that would control his mind.

“If I got the public at large outcry and attention of why I became insane, the public would bring these (two people) to accounting,” the notes said.

Yet another case history for gun control. Why wasn't the pawn shop that sold Brady the gun identified?
