TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- John List, who killed his wife, mother and three
children in 1971, wants to set the record straight.
The Westfield murderer is writing a book about the case, said Austin
Goodrich, an old friend of List's who is helping him write the book.
"He just decided to tell his story truly and end future speculation by the
media," Goodrich told the Asbury Park Press of Neptune for Sunday's
editions.
The book seeks to correct what List contends are errors contained in other
books about his life and the crime, Goodrich said.
Tentatively titled "Murder Revisited, The Life and Crimes of John List," by
John List with Austin Goodrich, the book reveals that List blames the deaths
on his own pride, which is why he never got help for his family's dire
financial problems.
List had lost his job and was facing foreclosure on his Hillside Avenue
mansion.
He told Goodrich that other books overplayed his religiousness as a factor
in the killings.
"His financial and professional situation were hopeless. He couldn't remedy
this by going on welfare or by seeking a job flipping burgers," Goodrich
said.
On Nov. 9, 1971, he shot his bedridden wife, Helen, 46; daughter Patricia,
16; sons John, 15, and Frederick, 13; and mother, Alma, 84.
Goodrich also said the book reveals that List feels regret and remorse for
the crimes -- something that other books and the judge who sentenced him
dispute.
List eluded authorities for 18 years, living in Colorado and Virginia under
the name Robert Clark. He was married in 1985 to Delores Miller, who didn't
discover his true identity until 1989, when FBI agents came to their
Richmond, Va., home and arrested him.
Prison officials in May 2001 diagnosed List as suffering from Post Traumatic
Stress Syndrome because of combat he saw during World War II. Goodrich, who
served with List in the army, believes that the disorder is partly to blame
for the murders.
It IS comforting, isn't it? Poor John.
But....

John....you coulda filed bankruptcy. Really. I have
neighbors who do it every seven years, then go buy
new cars. They *cannot* take your residence in a
bankruptcy, nor a mode of transportation. Flip those
burgers, get Medicaid to cover your wife's problems,
put the kids to work to make their own expenses.

O.J. will write a book setting it straight to all the reasons why he DIDN'T but
should have murdered his wife.
Patty
But Kris, he had his "pride". Besides he thought it would be easier to just
kill them and start over (no pride in that). It actually worked for a long
time. I wonder if, when he went to bed at night, he ever thought about them
or dreamed about them or invisioned their bloody bodies laying on the floor
side-by-side. Or relived over and over and over what he did to them. His
~friend~ says he feels guilt and remorse......NOT
Chocolic
I was hoping O.J.'s book would be why he did murder his wife, but wanted to
set the record straight that it was his pride that made him do it. :)
