GARY HART Dear Reader, thanks for being part of the movement to
abolish the Death Penalty, and
reaching out to the men on the row nationwide. I'm writing because I'm
in great need of your services. I've been incarcerated since '89 and
I'm only 26 years old. And really alone for the first time in my life.
My mother and sister were with me for as long as they could be
considering the stress. Right now I can't get anyone to even send me a
watch battery or stamps. The prison warden has gotten so tight on
security that its impossible to hustle or carry your own weight. After
ten years of this crap I fully realize that I'm more likely to die
here than not, so at least I don't want to suffer anymore than I have
to. I need a friend! Old or young that is willing to help me through
this hell. I'm openminded and willing to listen to your problems but
lets not depress each other all the time. We can discuss all topics
and assist the other with getting over bumps in the road of life.
Honestly I'd prefer a woman that I can love as a man can love a woman.
But in my situation I can't be unrealistic. From the beginning I 'm
making it known that I do not want anyone thats not serious. I can
understand when it takes a week or two to respond but not all the

LEROY WHITE I Hi ! I am Leroy White; but you can also call me "Sham"
short of my nickname
"Shamrock". I am single, 41 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and
weigh 155 pounds. I am on death row for the murder of my estranged
wife that I feel very remorseful for having so done. I suspected her
of having an affair due to her dishonesty that led to a very violent
altercation; and six weeks later I lost my temper during a heated
argument with my wife's sister. Often times I try to understand how
could I have allowed myself to do such horror; and the only conclusion
I can come to is the hurt and feeling of betrayal I was feeling,
topped off with jealousy, alcohol, and the bursting into rage during
the argument. To get angry at someone and withdraw affection for a
while and calm down later and give it back is one thing. But to get
angry at someone and take their life is the worst act; because no
matter how much you regret having taken their life, you can never give
it back once you have taken it. And being incapable of giving back the
life that I so foolishly took is, by far, the hardest thing I have
ever had to endure mentally. Now the state of Alabama wishes to take
my life, despite that doing so will not replace Ruby's life, it will
only make the state a murderer like me. I would be the first man ever
to be put to death in Alabama, and perhaps nationwide, for forcefully
entering the marital residence just to talk and express my logic
behind the break up of the marriage. Incidentally the murder did
occur, later, and on the outside of the residence, which I have never
denied. Yet, the state relied heavily on fabricated and coerced
testimony from only one of several witnesses, that boldly lied in
saying she heard me threaten to kill my wife. I never threatened or
plotted to kill anyone; and that is a true statement ! What I did was
awfully stupid and hideous that happened in the heat of passion when I
was hot tempered, heavily intoxicated, and irrational. Life on death
row has been totally secluded from the outside world, including much
of family and old-time friends. I would like to make new friends. I
would like to make new friends with you who are interested in writing.
Actually, I'm in search of a soulmate… girlfriend type… someone who is
charming, understanding, and fun, with time to share. Must also enjoy
writing, since it is my most convenient way of communication. My
interests are reading when I can, writing, geography, politics,
history, science, the outdoors, sports, motorcycles, music, the
mysteries of God, women of course, and a whole lot more. I am an open

Date of Birth : February 7, 1955 - Hometown : Memphis, Tennessee. My
name is Donald Beaty, I'm 45 years old, 6'1", brown hair and blue
eyes. In May of 1984 I was arrested and charged with the murder of a
young lady. Prior to my arrest the news media had a field day with the
murder because the young lady worked for one of the major newspapers,
and because the police department had failed to make an immediate
arrest, the public and news media were asking the police chief to
resign. My arrest caused a great deal of concern, because it was clear
the police were arresting me to get the media off their back....to
this day, I have maintained my innocence and can only pray the TRUTH
comes out one day. Police destroyed major evidence while doing their
testing, they failed to keep proper records and threatened witnesses
not to testify or to testify falsely. In the first trial the jury did
not convict me because the evidence did not show I committed the
murder. But here in the United States the law allows the prosecutor to
seek a RE-TRIAL if one juror votes to convict. ....People are fooling
themselves if they think the death penalty deters crimes, such as
murder. If that was true, our government would give out the death
penalty for all other crimes. People are not giving all those who
murder the death penalty. We have become a society that discriminates
against the poor and because funds are not provided to hire good
attorneys those defendants cannot receive proper representation and
expert witnesses who can do the testing needed. We live in a world
where people call themselves "Christians" but they fail to follow
God's laws and God's words. People always point to one part of
scripture, "EYE FOR EYE, TOOTH FOR TOOTH" But God said "Don't repay
evil for evil. Wait for the Lord to handle the matter." (Proverbs
20:22) and (1 Thessalonians 5:15) The death penalty only seeks to
avenge and God says "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves but rather
give place unto wrath : for it is written, "Vengeance is mine", I will
repay, saith the Lord." (Romans 12:19 and Leviticus 19:18).
People believe because I was convicted of such a crime and sit on
death row they know me. How far from the truth that is. In 1977, the
night after singer ELVIS PRESLEY died in Memphis, I was in front of
Graceland (Elvis Presley's home) when three young ladies were hit by a
drunk driver. That night I helped save the life of one of the young
ladies because "life" means so much to me. Why would I take a life if
life means so much to me. In the past I may have been involved in

1984. I was wrongly convicted of murder on the evidence of one man who
was drunk and high on drugs, and testified that I was involved in a
robbery in which three people were killed and another wounded. I was
brought here when I was 24 years old and can barely remember what it

" On October 29th, 1997 I was sentenced to death by Judge Gregory
Martin for crimes I did not commit and further were not allowed to
sufficiently defend myself against. Appeals have been delayed because
of missing transcripts, much of which were the testimony by federal
agents during the suppression hearings of September 1996. Arrest
warrants had to be issued for the court stenographer to get some of
the transcripts. She eventually released some of them and claimed no
knowledge of others. Presently,

THE VALUE OF FRIENDSHIP - A Writing By Richard Rossi-September, 1999.
When I decided to reach out to the outside world and find some
friends, it was back in 1986. I wrote to a number of colleges, pen pal
organizations, church groups, just about anyone who would hear me. I
received some answers. Believe it or not, I still have some of the
friends I made 13 years ago. That in itself says a lot about
friendships. Over the years I have become a writer and have attracted
additional friendships. This simple practice of letter writing is lost
on many people. Before prison, I was like many others, I did not write
many letters and the mail just brought bills to be paid. The telephone
had supplanted the mail. It is not easy to find people who care to
write letters these days. The friendships I have developed through
letters have taught me so much. The letters from my friends are my
life. They enable me to endure this cruel and miserable existence. I
see mayhem and insanity around me every day of my life. Men who have
no focus, no support, no reason to live. Most engage in watching mind
numbing and senseless TV comedies or other such programs, or they
argue and exchange anger with each other. All this in response to the
pressure of the loneliness of death row. I live for my letters with
news from my friends. They have become my extended family. They are
the root system that keeps me anchored and in touch with reality.
Certainly a reason for living when little else remains. A Yin and Yang
surely exist here. It leads me to believe that perhaps there is more
to life than all the pain and suffering. After all, there is a
dichotomy here. On the one hand, life has dealt me a death blow, taken
all I have, and replaced it with pain and loneliness. A life with
little meaning and less value. A cul-de-sac of dead ends, worry and
frustration. But all is changed due to the unflappable spirit and love
of total strangers. Who are these people? Why do they care about me, a
person branded as the "worst of the worst", a blight on society, a
seemingly worthless individual? Some would callously call these
friends "do gooders", or "bleeding hearts". However, this is not so -
the truth lies beneath the surface. My friends have become the essence
of life to me. The meaning of life. For life without them would be
totally meaningless. I am certain that I would have pulled the plug on
this cruel hoax called life a long time ago were it not for my
friends. Bent as it would appear to be solely on revenge, what this
uncaring society has done by warehousing me and dismissing me as
worthless has been countered by my friends, who have restored my faith
with love. Unconditional love. I liken my friends to doves of peace
dropping seeds of love and support at random. These seeds take root in
the harshest of environments, even here in the desert. The roots
spread like daisy chains and anchor me to the world. So strong are
these roots that they withstand the constant tugging of those who see
me as a mere weed in their garden and desire only to eliminate me.
Weeds have no purpose and are killed. My life has been nurtured by my
friendships. How much strength I get to face this adversity is
amazing. The cumulative effect of my friends is that I have been
taught the real meaning of brotherhood and love. Rather than be left
to bemoan the cold reality of my world on death row, and the hardships
it bestows on me daily, I consider myself to be an extraordinarily
fortunate and wealthy man. How amazing to find that love and
compassion can flourish even in this harsh desert wasteland! Although
hatred and pain will always exist, I have found that there is an
antidote, that being the caring and love that arrives in the form of
letters that float through these prison walls like magic, carrying a
drug stronger than the poison of hate. You who write to me have given
me hope and strength, you have taught me the meaning of true
friendship and humanity. You have restored what society has tried to
take from me. It is not the length of life that matters, but rather
the richness and quality of life. Thanks to you, my friends, I have

birthdate is 12/03/62. since the Arizona Department of Corrections
moved us to this "Special Management Unit II", I've gained ALOT of
weight, because there isn't a whole lot to do to keep myself
physically active and because I DESPISE exercise ! I used to be in the
Arizona Army National Guard (Field Artillery), so I know all about
exercise something I had to do in order to get paid back then.

My name is Bernard Smith and I'm a 46 year old black man on death row
in Arizona State Prison.
"A Plea" This is more of an urgent plea than a question or request as
my community ties are virtually none. I've been on death row for 16
years fighting for a new trial as I truly don't belong here. I've been
studying law for several years as I've come to learn you only receive
the amount of justice that you can afford in America. Much like
everything else I guess. Studying law is how I occupy my time and
mind, but without communication outside of the place becomes
suffocating. Death Row is the epitome of loneliness and despair for
anyone to conceive, even in a mere dream, to share views and opinions
with others can shed light where now there is only darkness. DEATH ROW
ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED TO MAKE HOBBY CRAFTS BUT I USED TO MAKE
KEYCHAINS TO HELP WITH MY LEGAL WORK AS I DO MY OWN. I do have a
