>Could anyone tell me what serial killers have existed >in Mass( besides Albert
De Salvo)or New England??
There is an unsolved series of murders that fit the SK murder profile. The
bodies were found on the major highway running the NH/VT border. I have a book
on it, but it is buried in my basement archives. The authorities believe the
crimes were committed by a truck driver. I will dig and see if I can find it.
It is not a new case. from Nan

There was (is?) Arthur Shawcross. Killed a kid..did time, was let
out..started killing prostitues.
Carol
He was from Watertown, New York.
Shawcross was in New York...
New Bedford authorities are still seeking one who got away, the
so-called "Highway Killer," blamed for 11 murders in 1988. Some others
crom New England overall included the unidentified "Valley Killer" (CT
River Valley, NH + VT); Amy Gilligan (CT); William Sarmento (RI); Carl
Drew (MA); and Gary Schaefer (VT). I believe the soon-to-be-released
Craig Price is also in New England, but I'm drawing a blank on the state
(possibly RI).

It has been so long ago since I read about the case, that I cannot
remember this particular serial killer's name, but there was one on
Cape Cod. He was a young fellow and he killed a couple of young women
that were there on vacation. He buried their bodies in the woods and
it is pretty much assumed that he went back to the graves on several
occasions and had sex with the corpses. I think this happened in the
late 60's.
I will try to look up his name and get back to you. There was also a
book written about the case and I will see if I can find it.
Interestingly enough, I can picture in my head the photos of him, the
victims and the dump sites but can't for the life of me remember his
name or the name of the book.
Anyone else remember?

Sounds like Anton Costa. I believe the book was IN HIS GARDEN.

YES! I knew you'd know, Michael. I have been trying to think of his
name for days.
He wasn't a very prolific serial killer but I think that it was only
because he was caught pretty quickly.
glas
I should've remembered him as soon as I heard "New England"; glad you
reminded me, glas. If I recall correctly, Costa was a kook for all
seasons, a heavy doper and satanic dabbler, convicted of killing 4 least
young women in Mass., suspected of one in New York, and a couple in
Calif. Hanged himself with a belt in state prison, May 1970, leaving his
SATANIC BIBLE and a collection of "magick" books behind.

Carlton Smith: Killing Season, ISBN 0-451-40546-3
Phillip E. Ginsburg, The Shadow of Death, ISBN 0-515-11547-9
Ginsburg writes of a series of killing in River Valley Conn. they stopped
suddenly, and a few months later a series started in New Bedford, Mass.
In comparing the distance, the dates, there is a good chance that it is the
same guy in both unsolved cases, just my point of view, check it out yourself.

Police in Lisbon later speculated that the unidentified "Highway Killer"
from New Bedford (1988) may have gone to Portugal and begun killing
prostitutes there, presumably based on the fact that New Bedford has a
large Portuguese population. Impossible to say, of course, since both
cases remain unsolved.
