There is an unsolved series of murders that fit the SK murder profile. The
bodies were found on the major highway running the NH/VT border. I have a book
on it, but it is buried in my basement archives. The authorities believe the
crimes were committed by a truck driver. I will dig and see if I can find it.
It is not a new case. from Nan

New Bedford authorities are still seeking one who got away, the
so-called "Highway Killer," blamed for 11 murders in 1988. Some others
crom New England overall included the unidentified "Valley Killer" (CT
River Valley, NH + VT); Amy Gilligan (CT); William Sarmento (RI); Carl
Drew (MA); and Gary Schaefer (VT). I believe the soon-to-be-released
Craig Price is also in New England, but I'm drawing a blank on the state
(possibly RI).

It has been so long ago since I read about the case, that I cannot
remember this particular serial killer's name, but there was one on
Cape Cod. He was a young fellow and he killed a couple of young women
that were there on vacation. He buried their bodies in the woods and
it is pretty much assumed that he went back to the graves on several
occasions and had sex with the corpses. I think this happened in the
late 60's.

I will try to look up his name and get back to you. There was also a
book written about the case and I will see if I can find it.
Interestingly enough, I can picture in my head the photos of him, the
victims and the dump sites but can't for the life of me remember his
name or the name of the book.

Anyone else remember?

Sounds like Anton Costa. I believe the book was IN HIS GARDEN.

YES! I knew you'd know, Michael. I have been trying to think of his
name for days.

He wasn't a very prolific serial killer but I think that it was only
because he was caught pretty quickly.

I should've remembered him as soon as I heard "New England"; glad you
reminded me, glas. If I recall correctly, Costa was a kook for all
seasons, a heavy doper and satanic dabbler, convicted of killing 4 least
young women in Mass., suspected of one in New York, and a couple in
Calif. Hanged himself with a belt in state prison, May 1970, leaving his
SATANIC BIBLE and a collection of "magick" books behind.

2 books about unsolved serial killings 1 in New England, Mass, 1 in River
Valley Conn.

Carlton Smith: Killing Season, ISBN 0-451-40546-3

Phillip E. Ginsburg, The Shadow of Death, ISBN 0-515-11547-9

Ginsburg writes of a series of killing in River Valley Conn. they stopped
suddenly, and a few months later a series started in New Bedford, Mass.
In comparing the distance, the dates, there is a good chance that it is the
same guy in both unsolved cases, just my point of view, check it out yourself.

Police in Lisbon later speculated that the unidentified "Highway Killer"
from New Bedford (1988) may have gone to Portugal and begun killing
prostitutes there, presumably based on the fact that New Bedford has a
large Portuguese population. Impossible to say, of course, since both
cases remain unsolved.

Lewis Lent is a serial killer who operated in western Mass and New York state. As for the Boston Strangler, DeSalvo confessed to the killings, but many believe there were actually two or more serial killers prowling the Boston-area at that time.
The New Bedford Highway Strangler case from the 1990s is still unsolved.
Jeff Mailhot killed three women in Woonsocket, RI, and cut up their bodies in his bathtub.
Billy Sarmento killed two children in Providence, RI. before his arrest.

John Whirty is a suspect in the murder of Sarah Pryor and perhaps other young girls in Massachusetts in the 1980s. He's now serving time in Texas for killing a teenage girl there.

Connecticut serial killer Michael Ross was executed by the state in 2005. Executions rarely happen in New England.

William Devin Howell, convicted of one murder in Connecticut, is a suspected serial killer. (Dubbed "The Sick Ripper")

That's a start

The song , "Midnight Rambler" by The Rolling Stones was written about Desalvo. The killings stopped after his incarceration. Nobody doubts that he was totally insane. He was murdered in prison.

I have no doubt that Albert DeSalvo was the Boston Strangler. The DNA proved it to me.

For other Massachusetts killers, there's nurse Jane Toppan, who killed at least 31 people by poisoning them. She was committed to an insane asylum in 1902 and died in 1938 at the age of 84.

William Devin Howell. He was from Virginia but he killed seven Connecticut residents while living here in 2003. You can read about him and the confessions that he exclusively gave me in my book, "His Garden: Conversations with a Serial Killer," published by WildBlue Press in July 2018, available on Amazon.
