I've got a '79 Bronco with a tired 351M, and want to inject the truck with
some serious torque....I'm not very knowledgable on Ford equipment. Does
anyone know if there is a 460 block that will mate up to my existing bell
housing and 4 speed tranny? Has anyone here done a swap like this?

Thanks, Mike

I know a 460 will bolt up to your bellhousing, and it might even bolt to your
motor mounts, I've never done such a swap, but I know a 400 will bolt in in
place of that 351M, as it's the same block. You can bolt a 400, 370(heavy
truck engine), 429, 460, 514 or 600(last two are SVO crate engines) up to your
bellhousing.
Good Luck

>I did a swap on an 80 f350. It was a auto however. The 460 and 351m have
the same bell housing pattern. So you can use your
trans and bellhousing. The clutch and fly wheel will have to be 460 parts.
The motor mounts should be 79 F250 or 350 factory parts.
The next problem is that the oil filter may not clear the frame crossmember.
This will reqiure a remote filter kit.
The next problem is that none of your 351m front assessories will fit the
460 so you will need all the parts off a donor motor.
I'm not sure of the oil pan as its differant on a Bronco.
There is a company in Texas called L+L products that sells Kits and parts
for this. I don't Know If they have a web site or not.
They did advertise in Truckin magazine while back. Good luck

This is a real common swap the 351m/400 bellhousing is a bolt on for a 460
imput shaft is the right length and all the good stuff even the clutch and
pressure plate are a match. The only fly in the ointment is a stick shift
flywheel for the 460. You MUST get the right one for your engine. Early
engines were a neutreal ballance later engines are not and require the
propper flywheel with its built in bob weight.

It's a great swap I did it to my 77 F-250 4x4 4spd. I don't' recommend
hooker headers if you are in a salty climate they rusted out too fast
for my liking and hooker didn't even care to speak with me about it. A
set of 350.00 headers should last more than 4 years I think ( Stick with
the regular exhaust manifolds if they aren't cracked like mine were)
other than that the 460 will slip in (Like the previous poster said
watch out and get the correct flywheel if your using a 4spd.) There are
two more things you may have to deal with if your bronco is not lifted
and you are using a car 460 (mine was out of a 73 town car) you may want
to get a truck oil pan because the oil pump is right above the axle with
the car pan. I got away with it because my F-250 had some extra springs
to carry my snowplow. The other thing is you will have to make a
alternator bracket it is no big deal my friend made one in no time very
cheap. Once you have the 460 in you will really know how bad that M was
the 460 even stock will walk all over the 351M/400.
Good luck you won't regret the change I know I didn't.

I haven't actually found a 460 yet...I don't yet have the Bronco
lifted....I have 32x12.50 Super Swampers on it now, and I wished I had
went with 33's as there seems to be plenty of room, so I doubt a lift is
in the immediate future. Right now I'm rebuilding the damn steering
box...after I got it torn down, I read on the rebuild kit "using Ford
tool # xxxxxx, remove lock nut from worm gear assembly"...of course,
nobody has such a tool out here in the middle of nowhere..hehe..gotta
love Fords.

What types of vehicles would be my best bet for find a manual
transmission style?

Thanks, Mike

If you have a chance to pick a engine look for a (I am not positive it's
been a while since I did mine) 71 or 72 town car engine I think the 71
had stock over 300Hp the 72 went down to 275 give or take a few and my
73 had only 210 but not to confuse things I pulled it from the wrecked
town car cleaned and painted it and slapped it in (it was a very good
motor best 150 bucks I ever spent) and it pulled stronger than two
351M's even with that low factory HP rating. I think they may have been
a bit under the real power when they rated it

I have a '83 Bronco with a 460 shoved in it. You might have problems with
clearance on the oil filter, we used a remote filter kit. The moter was out of a
'76 F-250 and the moter mounts, air conditioner, alternater ect from the '76
were used. Even with the C-6 auto, it's popped the rear differential twice, if
only I would keep my foot out of it :) Overall it was a pretty easy swap and I
think you'll like it.

Alan, does your Bronco have the 9 inch rear end in it also?

Thanks again Glen..you've convinced me to go ahead with the swap...I was
never a Ford fan till I got this Bronco..this thing is ideal out here in
the Ozarks...it's one tough truck...you won't find any aluminum in this
beast...I had to drop the tranny recently...I bet the transfer case
alone weighed 125 pounds or more! Good ol' cast iron...hehe

Oh, just got the Saginaw box rebuilt too!
