What is the small grilled vent on the passenger side of my Ranger's
dashboard? It looks like an AC vent, but I can't get any air to blow out of
it. What is is for? What does it do?

Thanks

Yeah, there's on in my mom's 'battle barge'... Someone told me it was to vent some
computer thingy in the dash... who knows...

It is a radio heat vent... I had a '98 and '92 ranger with the same thing.

If you're talking about a recent model year (97+?), and the small vent to
the right of the stereo head unit, it's some sort of sensor for the
climate control system I believe.

Actually it's the inlet for your blinker fluid. Removing the vent gives
you access to the blinker fluid resevoir and kankiful pin. While you have
it open, you may want to remove the kankiful pin and check the muffler
bearings. Worn muffler bearings can cause unneeded stress on the exhaust
backpressure torque control valve.

:-D j/k...i thought it was for the climate control, guess it's not...my
apologies

This is a Ranger. I don't think that the truck has a climate control.
Maybe it is the same dash for the Explorer but I'm not sure that the
Explorers have climate controls.

When I bought the truck, the '98 Ranger XLT, the sales guy, I know he was
just a sales guy, said it was a radio heat vent.

By the way, the blinker fluid is by the driver's side tail light, near the
bumper grease insert...

If you knew what you were talking about you would know that Rangers had
CHROME muffler bearings. I have NEVER seen them wear out yet!
I would however reccommend checking the piston return springs... if they get
lazy it can also overload the torque control valve..

You can still buy it online. Here's a link:

They also have muffler bearings and piston return springs as well as
kuhneutson valves.

I guess I will have to answer this question since NO ONE knows what it is. The
ford ranger and the explorer use the same dash.

The explorer uses it as part of the climate control system and the ranger does
not use it for anything.

Even tho it has no use in the Ranger, I did get a chuckle or two out of the
replies.

Daytime Running Lights sensor?

94 Tbirds had one in the dash (not for DRL but to automatically turn on your
headlights when it got dark).

Nah...I believe that is near the defroster by the windshield, or maybe on
the rearview mirror or something.

Ah, but my truck isn't equipped with DRL (THANK GOD!) and it'd probably just
show an empty hole. However, there *might* be something under there that would
shed light on it's true purpose... I'm not gonna be the one to break it trying
to pop it out :)

You'll need a left handed gangley iron wrench to check the muffler bearings.

I called the dealer and asked them about it. The service manager said that
he wasn't sure what it was for, but that my warranty would be voided if it
got covered up.

I asked the same question three years ago when I got my 99 Ranger, and
I got an answer that's believeable. The Ranger and Explorer share the
same dashboard. The Explorer has optional automatic temperature
control. The temperature sensor is located behind that vent on the
Explorer.
