I'm looking for a mid-size SUV. While I would prefer a Toyota 4Runner, or
even a Honda Pilot, these vehicles are overpriced and dealers won't come
down on their prices.
Anyone have good or bad luck with their Explorer? I'm considering the
cheaper Explorer XLS model.

I've had 2 explorers, a '92 and a 95. Both with the standard V6 engine. I
put 110k miles on the '92, and 156k miles on the '95, both without
significant repairs. I used Mobil1 in both (I wonder if I'll spark a few
comments on the validity of synthetic motor oil by mentioning that). I used
both explorers for everyday Midwest driving (garaged at night), and several
trips to the Colorado Rockies, including some fairly questionable
trail/off-road adventures. Both performed admirably. Parts are readily
available because these vehicles are so popular. I wanted more room/more
power, so I stepped up to a F150.

Thanks Scott for the reply. To be honest, I have been nervous about the
thought of buying an American vehicle. I'll have to talk it over with my
better half.

America had some "dark days" in the '80's, and a few in the "90's with
automobiles, but their quality has improved drastically. I don't believe
you would be dissatisfied with the Explorer, they are very popular
nowadays, and you don't get that popular by selling junk. Just my .02.
