Why do people say that Chevy trucks are the best selling in America? If they
are, I cannot see why?
Compare a 200 Ford F-150 to a 2000 Chevy Z71.
I think F-150's look far better than Z71's.
I don't know much as far as engines go, but F-150's in general look better than
Z71's
Atleast thats my opinion

You can't decide which is a better vehical just by looks. I think the
previous generation chevy's look better than the most recent, and better
than the F-150s, but the Super Duty's are sharp.

As far as engines go, I hear Chevy has a supurb diesel coming out that will
be made by Isuzu. More powerful than the PSD.

Well your right that it's all a matter of opinion. To be honest with
you, I thought the body lines of the F150 line was ugly when they
first came out. Since then then they grown on me a bit. I felt the
same way about the Ford Taurus when they first arrived on the market.
However, the Chevy Silverado is a nice truck. As much as I hate to
admit it, the interior creature comforts and ergonomic engineering is
the best I've seen in any truck. The power bucket seats sit real
nice. Now I hear that Cadilac will be coming out with truck as well.
I can't wait to see what that one looks like.

It all depends on what your looking for in a truck. There's a lot of
people that don't even qualify a truck as a truck if has too many
luxury options on it. Many buyers are very loyal to a particular
brand i.e ford camp, doge camp, GM camp. Some people hate a
particular brand because they bought one and had problems when most of
the American manufactures quality was lacking in the early to mid
80's.

With all that said, I bought a new 2000 Superduty crew cab over a new
Silverado extended cab. While their was trade offs in features, after
test driving all the new trucks, I kept comming back to the Superduty.
I liked the more conservative body styling over the F series. Just
personal preference. Another thing I especially liked was the extra
interior width. I'm not that big of a person but I noticed a definate
difference. I thought it was just me so I did an interior dimension
comparison between Dodge, F series, Silverado and superduty and the
proof was on paper. I was surprised that the interior width of the
Superduty was greater in the hips and shoulders than the other trucks.
I can't remember all the stats but the difference between the
Superduty and the Silverado was significant.

i am a chevy guy all the way, and the new silverados are a joke.

gm had 8 friggin years to top ford and dodge. EIGHT YEARS! 8 years to make
their truck everything the competitors had and more.

they could not ever figure out a way to get 4 door in it.

what a joke. and then it's the most expensive truck out there?

no wonder i jumped ship and bought a ford. hell, i bought two of them in a
three month span. it killed me as a die-hard GM fan, but what can i say? i
can't see that the GM's are any better, especially the escalade which has
the underpinnings of the old SUV's!

oh yeah, the new monte carlo is the ugliest piece of crap i have ever seen.

Actually, GM has been offering the 4 door extended cab since something
like December. Why they didn't just make the extended cab a standard
4 door truck I have no idea.

Now they also have it available in a 4 door crew cab.

Try about a 15 year old Chevy 3/4 or 1 ton. They made and sold quite a few
4-door trucks back then but suddenly quit.

that's actually not true, while the F-150 sells more models than the
silverado sierra or c/k class, GM sells more trucks overall. and it's been
that way for a long time. but because GMC is about 10-15% (i think) of GM
truck sales, it is taking away what would be chevy sales if GMC didn't
exist, and that would dethrone Ford...

GM sells more vehicles than anyone, worldwide...but with the crap they've
been putting out lately, you have to wonder if it's gonna last.

the good old 3+3! yeah, those were cool trucks. my family had a '79 ford
crew cab with a 460 engine. that was such a great truck.

but i meant a supercab.

i should also be more clear. if you go back to the 80's, 87 i believe, GM
came out with the "more rounded" truck, and it was better than ford by a
longshot, then around 93 dodge came out with the new ram and "changed the
rules", and ford came out with the f-150 in 95-96 and got what people wanted
in a truck. i think that is the most revolutionary truck ever. all the
carlike qualities you'd ever like with truck feel. gm's still sitting on
their hands at this point. then ford comes out with the superduty as well!
ford made two great trucks, and still, where is GM? oh, here they come with
"the truck" which is even with dodge and ford. for the billions spent in
R&D, "the truck" should be revolutionary, not "about as good as the rest"

it broke my heart. then my superduty put it back together ;-)

Ford has been the #1 selling truck to the public for the last 16 years but
GM and GMC sell more to the Federal Government because they buy JUNK.

well, this is both good news and bad news for me from last year:

when i went shopping for PSD's, i could not find them anywhere. it was hard
enough to find a SuperDuty, let alone one with PSD! i finally got to asking
about orders, and was told pretty much the same thing "the allocation of
PSD's are going to fleet orders for the government! they're buying them
all."

then of course the ones that weren't sold to the gov't went to upfitters, so
they can charge me $20,000 over the price of a lariat for an electric rear
window and 3 pieces of wood, and a few stickers on the side ;-)

so it's not all bad...they are going to ford a bit more it seems like. a
friend of a fried who works for at&t was telling me they were switching to
SD's, though not PSD's, and you are starting to see a lot of f250's with
at&t stickers on them. they all seem to be 350 reg cab short box v-10 4wd
with a really nice camper shell. in seattle they did not have brush guards
and winches, but down here, i've passed a few on the road that do.

That is over for the last week or so. Ford isn't shipping anymore Pickups to
Centurion, Regency, Tuscany or any of the other mass upfitters until the supply
situation is retified. You may have an easier time finding what you want now.

Robert

PS, I know the upfitters get a lot of money for what they do, but get real,
$20,000 is more than I've seen on any Pickup conversion. Spending a LOT (less
than $20,000) of money gets you a REALLY nice conversion with a lot more than
you listed.

Nah, find another dealer.. The dealers that are telling you that they can't
order PSDs is because that particular dealership has no allotments for PSDs.
Other quality dealerships that sell alot of trucks, (Superdutys), have good
allotments and can get the truck you want.. I've heard it all to often about
dealerships claiming that Ford Motor Company can't deliver SD's to any
dealership, or that no one can order SD's now.. This is to keep you from going
elsewhere. Not all dealerships are run the same way.. There are many that have
good SD allotments.

hahahah...of course you're right. i'm exaggerating. actually, they way i've
figured it, cost on a conversion van or truck, just a basic conversion, is
about $2500 and then dealers mark up from there. but when i lived in dallas,
you'd see a lot of conversions for sale, dirt cheap, and i started to see a
pattern on when they'd mark them down, they'd knock off all but about $2000
or so.

i thought it really sucked, how many trucks ford was sending to upfitters. i
mean really, there's a lot of people out there that just plain need a work
truck. most people who have SD's don't want all of the nice stuff. heavy
duty trucks are made to be abused. that's why i wanted an XLT, not a lariat.
i didn't want to mess up all that nice leather-though i would love the trip
computer (i'm following that thread about people who put the computer from
an expedition in a ranger very closely)

i have seen $20,000 conversions, and they are pretty awesome. f-550's. i
also saw a suburban that was $20,000 in conversion as well, it was a
high-top, tv's, sofa/bed...very cool truck.

that's good info, but i never ran into that problem. here's how i got my
truck:

i shopped around, and called service managers and asked how much above
invoice they'd charge me to order a truck (this is california, BTW)

so i got a few guys working against one another, and got a guy to do it $750
over invoice. i ordered a 99 f-250 SD with PSD, XLT trim, crew cab, 6' box,
2wd, auto, black. fully loaded. i was told to wait 6-8 weeks, and i gave
them a refundable $500 deposit.

so one of the dealers i was pitting against the guys i ordered from gave me
a call. they said, i've got a truck here on the lot right now, a cancelled
fleet order that took 8 months, if you want to buy it. i told them, sorry, i
ordered an f250 the other day. they guy asked me how much i paid for it, and
i told him, $32,000...or close to that. i said thanks, but no thanks.

so anyway, 15 minutes later, the salesman calls me back, and says, you can
have this truck tonight for $32,000. come look at it.

so i did. it was a 350 dually, XLT, PSD...everything i ordered except it had
an 8' bed, 6 wheels, and it was red. but it was there. and i had been
looking a long time for one with automatic that wasn't a centurion
conversion.

and since i was leasing, getting it now, when bank rates were very good (dec
30 1998), i could lease it pretty well, especially since the MSRP was higher
than the truck i ordered.

to make a long story short, i got the dually. it wasn't what i really
wanted, but i do like the handling and braking. and having the largest
vehicle on the road does have its advantages ;-)

so there's a few drawbacks, but i'll be able to sell it pretty easy
someday...though i doubt i ever will. that truck will probably go forever.
damn that is a well built vehicle.

but there is a smidgen of truth to the whole "i can't order you that" crap.
in metro areas where i am, ford expects to sell a lot of escorts and fecus's
(focus). they have to, because the fed/epa looks at the total mileage for
the entire ford fleet. so, to keep their average at whatever uncle sam says,
they have to sell 10 ranger 4 bangers/escorts/4 cyl for every superduty they
sell. so if a dealership is behind in selling the econoboxes, they won't get
the same allotment they would have.

that also tells you why so many cars are sold below cost to rental agencies.
it's worth it to lose $1000 on a taurus to Hertz to sell a SUV to a dealer
and make $3000....

There is certainly more to a good truck than looks. Have you driven a new
Chevy? Have you even sat in one?

I have a F-250 (SD) but I personaly think the Chevy looks better (and is
probably a much better truck) than the F-150, but of course, not better than
the Super Duty...

I did opt for the Superduty. However, I did feel like there was some
trade offs. The Chevy had some great creature comforts. Those
leather bucket seats were extreamly comfortable. GM was hyping up the
fact that they did some very extensive ergonomic research and
engineering and developed those seats to fit something like 95 percent
of the population comfortably for longer road trips. I gotta say they
did fit my frame nice (and I'm not a big leather seat fan).

(Lets see only about another 2 month wait for my Superduty CC V10.)
