I have been noticing fluid in our drive for some time. I took my 97
F150 to the mechanic. He is saying it is leaking somewhere through the
engine.
He says he needs to pull the engine out to fix it, change the water
pump and do a bunch of other stuff.
5 to 6 hours of shop charge plus materials.
He is saying it will cost over $800.
I live in Silicon Valley California where things are expensive,
especially labor. However, do you think his estimates are reasonable?

May be just a freeze plug, but even if it's a leaking head gasket, that
still seems high. Get another opinion.

GOD BLESS THE USA
Cost me over $800 for a leaking water pump gasket on an 1988 460. There
is a lot of labor to get at the thing.
I had the water pump replaced on an '86, and total cost - pump and labor
was under $150. You sure don't have to pull the engine. I think someone
saw both of you coming!!
Tom J
Geez, were are guys like you when I need money!! I put a water pump on a 460
a while back. I felt bad charging the guy for 3 hours labor!

When I crawled under the truck, I noticed that the fluid was coming
from the back of the engine closer to the transmission.
If I remember it correctly, the mechanic is saying that the fluid is
coolant coming from a leak somewhere around the head gasket.
I thought the fluid was first transmission fluid but he says it is
not.
The transmission fluid level seems to be normal, but the coolant level
is down a bit. However, over the past few weeks I would have expected
more coolant to go down.
Also, what I see on the driveway seems to be staying longer than
water, like something oily. Unless the antifreeze does not let it
evoporate easily. Or maybe the coolant is getting mixed with
lubricants...
I did not understand why he needs to change the water pump.

Problem Abstract: Coolant Leak but where
Reported By: Mitch Bogle (mbo...@aol.com)
Year: 1997
Model: XLT
Wheel Drive: 4x2
Engine: 4.2L V6
Applicable Options: Coolant leak into engine
Solution: Repair gasket and replace engine
Cost: fighting ford
Other: I was told by another owner after she lost an engine that Ford
had issued a quiet recall of all 4.2L V6 engines to fix the problem I
have yet to see a recall posted. I am watching my coolant drop about 1
inch per month. This is not normal depletion of coolant. I am about to
swallow the cost and have the seal replaced myself and fight Ford
later.

Problem Abstract: 4.2 Liter Coolant Leak Not Covered by "Recall"
Reported By: Bill Silva ()
Year: 1997
Model: XL
Wheel Drive: 4x2
Engine: 4.2L V6
Applicable Options:
Solution: Front cover, gasket, oil & filter replaced.
Cost: $58
Other: Started leaking at 56K miles. Brought it in they said "It's
probably recall 99B29, you'll be all set." But when they ran my VIN
thru the database, it came back saying that my truck wasn't covered
because of the date of manufacture and where it was built. Service
manager thought that Ford should cover it. He tried to convince them
on my behalf and I argued with them as well, but they wouldn't cover
it. Service Manager had the job done under a P05(80% under warranty,
20% charged to customer) which saved me a lot. Hats off to him! My
first and LAST Ford truck, that's for damn sure...
