I have a new 2002 Ranger King Cab XLT. The air conditioner seems to be on
when the ventilation control is in any position other than off. Is this
right?

My other cars let me kill the air, yet still have interior ventilation
controlled by a fan.

Thanks for any info!

RTFM...
According to the manual for my 01 Ranger, the AC is only inhibited in
the foot-vent-only or face-vent-only positions. The defrost, defrost/foot,
face/foot, and of course AC and Max AC all run the AC if you set the
temperature low enough (obviously a problem for those of us who want
to just bring in the air without heating at all).

I just got an 02 super cab and noticed the same thing. It's explained in the
manual (not very well) that the air will come on at any control position if
the temp control is turned down - except for 2 positions where the air won't
come on - heat on your feet or vent in your face. Seems kind of strange to
me too.

Is there any easy way to add a manual switch for the air, or to rewire the
sucker to work in a conventional manner?

You can put a switch inline with the wire that goes from the control
head to the a/c compressor.

The problem is that you'll have to pay attention and make sure the
switch is "on" when you try to defog your windshield.
